Microbial investigation of biofilms recovered from endotracheal tubes using sonication in intensive care unit pediatric patients BJID
Ferreira,Thiago de Oliveira; Koto,Rafael Yoshio; Leite,Gabriel Fialkovitz da Costa; Klautau,Giselle Burlamaqui; Nigro,Stanley; Silva,Cely Barreto da; Souza,Ana Paula Idalgo da Fonseca; Mimica,Marcelo Jenne; Cesar,Regina Grigolli; Salles,Mauro José Costa.
Abstract Objectives To compare cultured microorganisms identified on endotracheal tubes biofilms through sonication technique with traditional tracheal aspirate collected at extubation of pediatric intensive care unit patients. Methods Demographic and epidemiological data were analyzed to identify factors possibly related with the microbiological profile of the two collection methods. Associations between categorical and continuous variables were analyzed using the chi-square or Fisher's exact test, or Student's t test. p-Value <0.05 were considered significant. Results Thirty endotracheal tubes and tracheal aspirates samples from 27 subjects were analyzed. Only one patient presented the clinical diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Overall,...

Influence of sonication and in vitro evaluation of nifedipine self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system BJPS
Eid,Ahmad M; Elmarzugi,Nagib A; Jaradat,Nidal A.
In order to develop a self-nanoemulsifying system, three components, olive oil, Tween 80, and Capmul, were used to construct a ternary phase diagram that helped to find the optimum formulation, which was loaded with nifedipine. The effect of sonication on drug loading was also evaluated. After that, measurement of the droplet size, size distribution, zeta potential, and scanning electron microscopy were conducted for evaluation and characterisation of the formulations. The phase diagram of four formulations showed nanosizes below 200 nm; however, only one was selected to be loaded with nifedipine. The selected formulation had the lowest droplet size of 98 nm and size distribution 0.192, and was composed of 48% Tween 80, 32% Capmul, and 20% olive oil. The...

ABSTRACT: The high intensity ultrasound-assisted extraction (HIU) is one of the most simple, quick and efficient techniques for the extraction of phenolic and other antioxidant compounds from plants. This is the first application of HIU for the extraction of these compounds from goldenberry fruit. The HIU and conventional extraction techniques showed similar results regarding to phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity. However, the time required for HIU extraction (5min) was 24 times lower than conventional extraction (120min). Phenolic compounds reported were chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and rutin. In vitro cytotoxicity assays were used for evaluation of extracts and the results showed that in a wide range of concentration, the extract maintains...

Sensory and chemical evaluation of tea brews prepared with the assistance of ultrasound Ciência Rural
Kowalski,Radosław; Wyrostek,Jakub; Kałwa,Klaudia; Kowalska,Grażyna; Pankiewicz,Urszula; Sujka,Monika; Włodarczyk-Stasiak,Marzena; Mazurek,Artur.
ABSTRACT: The aim of the study was to evaluate sensory and phytochemical (polyphenols, flavonoids and caffeine) estimation of black and green tea brews obtained in an alternative way through brewing with the assistance of ultrasound. Brews produced with the application of sonication for 2 minutes and 1 minute were the most preferred by the sensory evaluation team. Evaluation of the brews in terms of component descriptors, i.e. fragrance, flavour and colour, was varied and depended on the kinds of tea and on the applied experimental factors. It was demonstrated that ultrasound have a significant effect on the extraction of active substances, i.e. polyphenols, flavonoids and caffeine, from black and green tea. The application of sonication caused a...
