This study was developed to evaluate the effect of adding natural pigments on the storage of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle submitted to diets based on corn and low-tannin sorghum. A total of 160 eggs from Hy-Line Brown laying hens at 90 - weeks old after forced molting were used. The study evaluated the isolated effect and the interaction of two factors: the inclusion of natural pigments (control diet - 50% low-tannin sorghum replacing the corn; RC - 2% powdered dry turmeric rhizome; PU - 2% dry annatto powder; RCPU - 1% turmeric rhizome + 1% dry annatto powder) combined with the storage period (0, 3, 7, 14 and 21 days). The studied variables were: specific gravity, percentages of yolk, albumen and shell in relation to the egg... |

This study determined the fractionation of protein and carbohydrate of Piata palisadegrass ensiled with energetic meals. The experiment was developed at the Federal Institute of Goiás State, Rio Verde Campus, using a completely randomized design with four replications, in a 4 x 5 factorial arrangement, being four energetic meals (millet, corn, sorghum and wheat) and five levels of addition (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32%). The meals were obtained by grinding the grains, where the levels of addition were calculated based on natural material. The results indicated that the energetic meals represented good sources of additives for ensiling Piata palisadegrass, for considerably improving protein and carbohydrate fractions. However, among the meals used, the sorghum was... |

The threshing section on combine harvester or thresher machine affects grain and stalk separation performance. The present study is conducted with view to optimize important operational and crop parameters influencing the threshing of sorghum. In this research, the effects of cylinder speed with four levels (13, 17, 21 and 25 m s-1), concave clearance (5, 10 and 15 mm) and feed rate (420, 500 and 590 kg h-1) were investigated on un-separated seed percentage, damaged seed percentage and germination. Result of ANOVA showed that cylinder speed had a significant effect on unseparated seed percentage and damaged seed percentage (P |

Nutrient runoff from feedlot can contaminate surface and groundwater and may cause eutrophication if not managed properly. In this study, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly hydroponic treatment was compared with the standard Hoagland solution for treating feedlot runoff and evaluating plant growth and nutrient removal under greenhouse conditions. The hydroponic remediation method was evaluated in batches using 10 L of feedlot runoff and Hoagland solution individually applied in a plastic tub planted with water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), water lettuce (Postia stratiotes), and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) separately. Water samples were collected weekly and plant biomass were collected at the beginning and the end of the experiment. The sorghum... |

Dry matter (DM) ruminal degradability of corn (Zea mays L.), millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L. R. Br.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench.) was evaluated using in situ technique with samples in green chopped and ensiled forms. Two crossbred fistulated (live weight of 480kg) dry cows participated. Samples of six grams in each forage were incubated in the rumen for 6, 24 and 96 hours. We estimated time zero (t0) washing the bags in water and it was used to calculate solubility. The experimental design followed a randomized block design with a split plot. We compared the average of DM through the SNK test at 5% probability. The results of disappearance (%) of dry matter forages of green chopped and ensiled forms in 0, 6, 24 and 96 hours were respectively:... |

Weed suppression is one of the several benefits achieved by soil incorporation of crop residues and such suppression is believed to be allelopathic in nature. The allelopathic potential of different crop residues: viz. sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), brassica (Brassica campestris L.) was evaluated in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and jungle rice (Echinochloa colona [L.] Link). Chopped crop residues were soil-incorporated alone and mixed at 6 g kg-1 soil (12 t ha-1) and compared with a control without residues. Soil incorporation of residues substantially delayed germination of jungle rice. The time to start germination, time to 50% emergence, mean emergence time, emergence index, and final germination percentage were all... |

We present a detailed ethnographic case study of sorghum seed acquisitions in a smallholder farming society in northern Cameroon. The effects of variability in household demographics and socioeconomic status on observed patterns of seed provisioning are explored alongside other variables such as age and gender. Our data set comprised 223 seed acquisition events. Independence tests (Pearson’s chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests) were carried out to test for significant dependencies between individual- or household-level characteristics and properties of seed acquisition events (categories of seed source, social relationship of exchange, and type of landrace). Results indicate that wealth is a structuring factor of the local seed... |

The results presented in this work support the hypothesis that Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of sorghum is feasible, analogous to what has been demonstrated for other cereals such as rice, maize, barley and wheat. The four factors that we found most influenced transformation were: the sensitivity of immature sorghum embryos to Agrobacterium infection, the growth conditions of the donor plant, type of explant and co-cultivation medium. A major problem during the development of our protocol was a necrotic response which developed in explants after co-cultivation. Immature sorghum embryos proved to be very sensitive to Agrobacterium infection and we found that the level of embryo death after co-cultivation was the limiting step in improving... |
