Recent records of the Atlantic Petrel(Pterodroma incerta) for the Atlantic Regionof the Southern Ocean and Antarctica Hornero
Orgeira,José Luis.
New records of the Atlantic Petrel (Pterodroma incerta) at-sea for the Atlantic region of the Southern Ocean and Antarctica were reported during summer 2009 and 2010. Most of these observations occurred outside the accepted range for this species and improve the available information on its distribution. The Atlantic Petrel has been regularly recorded north and south of the Antarctic Convergence for more than 30 years, although these records are still considered casual and not part of their usual pelagic range.

First record of Grapsus grapsus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Brachyura: Decapoda: Grapsidae) in freshwater habitat ArchiMer
Arai, Tammy Iwasa; Brandao Costa, Manoela; Freire, Andrea Santarosa.
The sally lightfoot crab, Grapsus grapsus (Linnaeus, 1758), has been recorded from the oceanic islands off Brazil, as well as from the Caribbean, in coastal rocky shores in the Eastern Pacific, and in Galapagos. We report the first observation of G. grapsus in freshwater habitat, registered in a stream at Trindade Island, Brazil.

Organic carbon accumulation in modern sediments of the Angola basin influenced by the Congo deep sea fan ArchiMer
Baudin, Francois; Martinez, Philippe; Dennielou, Bernard; Charlier, Karine; Marsset, Tania; Droz, Laurence; Rabouille, Christophe.
Geochemical data (total organic carbon-TOC content, δ13Corg, C:N, Rock-Eval analyses) were obtained on 150 core tops from the Angola basin, with a special focus on the Congo deep sea fan. Combined with the previously published data, the resulting dataset (322 stations) shows a good spatial and bathymetric representativeness. TOC content and δ13Corg maps of the Angola basin were generated using this enhanced dataset. The main difference in our map with previously published ones is the high terrestrial organic matter content observed downslope along the active turbidite channel of the Congo deep sea fan till the distal lobe complex near 5,000 m of water-depth. Interpretation of downslope trends in TOC content and organic matter composition indicates that...

Agulhas eddy fluxes in a 1/6 degrees Atlantic model ArchiMer
Treguier, Anne-marie; Boebel, O; Barnier, B; Madec, G.
A 1/6degrees resolution primitive equation model of the Atlantic circulation is analyzed in the Agulhas region. The model has a realistic level of eddy kinetic energy, and produces anticyclonic Agulhas rings as well as cyclonic structures. In the model as well as in the data, ring trajectories undergo a transition between a turbulent character in the Cape Basin and a steady propagation in the rest of the South Atlantic. The topography of the Walvis Ridge does not seem to play a part in generating this contrast in the model. The model shows that cyclones are primarily generated from the negative shear vorticity side of the Agulhas Current as it leaves the coast, and they are most of the time paired with anticyclones in dipolar or tripolar structures....

Imaging exhumed lower continental crust in the distal Jequitinhonha basin, Brazil ArchiMer

Twelve combined wide-angle refraction and coincident multi-channel seismic profiles were acquired in the Jequitinhonha-Camamu-Almada, Jacuípe, and Sergipe-Alagoas basins, NE Brazil, during the SALSA experiment in 2014. Profiles SL11 and SL12 image the Jequitinhonha basin, perpendicularly to the coast, with 15 and 11 four-channel ocean-bottom seismometers, respectively. Profile SL10 runs parallel to the coast, crossing profiles SL11 and SL12, imaging the proximal Jequitinhonha and Almada basins with 17 ocean-bottom seismometers. Forward modelling, combined with pre-stack depth migration to increase the horizontal resolution of the velocity models, indicates that sediment thickness varies between 3.3 km and 6.2 km in the distal basin. Crustal thickness at...

Plankton communities of the South Atlantic anticyclonic gyre ArchiMer
Piontkovski, Sa; Landry, Mr; Finenko, Zz; Kovalev, Av; Williams, R; Gallienne, Cp; Mishonov, Av; Skryabin, Va; Tokarev, Yn; Nikolsy, Vn.
Data collected during cruises of the Former Soviet Union (in 1963-1989) and the British Atlantic meridional transect program (in 1995-1999) were used to analyse macroscale patterns in phyto- and zooplankton biomass, size structure, species diversity, chlorophyll a, and plankton bioluminescence in the macroscale anticyclonic gyre of the South Atlantic Ocean. The spatial pattern of bioluminescence intensity was in good agreement with that of remotely sensed (CZCS) chlorophyll a, phosphate, salinity, and copepod species diversity index distributions especially in terms of geographic inclinations of the isolines, both associated with the north-westward pattern off the South equatorial current. Among the 416 copepod species recorded in samples, 51 species were...

Coral-based climate records from tropical South Atlantic: 2009/2010 ENSO event in C and O isotopes from Porites corals (Rocas Atoll, Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pereira,Natan S.; Sial,Alcídes N.; Kikuchi,Ruy K.P.; Ferreira,Valderez P.; Ullmann,Clemens V.; Frei,Robert; Cunha,Adriana M.C..
ABSTRACT Coral skeletons contain records of past environmental conditions due to their long life span and well calibrated geochemical signatures. C and O isotope records of corals are especially interesting, because they can highlight multidecadal variability of local climate conditions beyond the instrumental record, with high fidelity and sub-annual resolution. Although, in order to get an optimal geochemical signal in coral skeleton, sampling strategies must be followed. Here we report one of the first coral-based isotopic record from the Equatorial South Atlantic from two colonies of Porites astreoides from the Rocas Atoll (offshore Brazil), a new location for climate reconstruction. We present time series of isotopic variation from profiles along the...

Population dynamics of Siderastrea stellata Verrill, 1868 from Rocas Atoll, RN: implications for predicted climate change impacts at the only South Atlantic atoll Anais da ABC (AABC)
PINHEIRO,BARBARA R.; PEREIRA,NATAN S.; AGOSTINHO,PAULA G.F.; MONTES,MANUEL J.F..
ABSTRACT Coral reefs are one of the most vulnerable ecosystems to ocean warming and acidification, and it is important to determine the role of reef building species in this environment in order to obtain insight into their susceptibility to expected impacts of global changes. Aspects of the life history of a coral population, such as reproduction, growth and size-frequency can contribute to the production of models that are used to estimate impacts and potential recovery of the population, acting as a powerful tool for the conservation and management of those ecosystems. Here, we present the first evidence of Siderastrea stellata planulation, its early growth, population size-frequency distribution and growth rate of adult colonies in Rocas Atoll. Our...

Taxonomy, morphology and distribution of Cymatosiraceae (Bacillariophyceae) in the littorals of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul Biota Neotropica
Garcia,Marinês.
Species of Cymatosiraceae (diatoms) studied from Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul littorals: Campylosira cymbelliformis, Cymatosira belgica, Cymatosirella minutissima, Plagiogrammopsis minima and Plagiogrammopsis vanheurckii) are presented with a morphological description, dimension data, distribution in the studied area and are illustrated in light microscope, and scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Superficial sand samples from the swash zone and plankton were collected from over 30 marine sandy beaches. Cymatosirella minutissima and Plagiogrammopsis minima are new recordings in Brazil widening their distribution to South America, previously being restricted to Europe. Campylosira cymbelliformis was the species most often observed in...
