Sedimentary changes on the Southeastern Brazilian upper slope during the last 35,000 years Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mahiques,Michel M.; Fukumoto,Marina M.; Silveira,Ilson C.A.; Figueira,Rubens C.L.; Bícego,Marcia C.; Lourenço,Rafael A.; Mello-e-Sousa,Silvia H..
A first evaluation of the sedimentary changes, including accumulation of inorganic and organic carbon on the upper slope off Southeastern Brazil under different climatic conditions, based on the analysis of a sedimentary core, is here presented. Results indicate that sedimentation rate as well sedimentary characteristics, including the nature of the organic carbon deposited during the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum), were different from the present deposition, indicating higher primary productivity during the LGM, to be accounted for by the higher values of marine organic carbon. Nevertheless, the higher values of Accumulation Rate of calcium carbonate and organic carbon can be credited to the higher values of the sedimentation rates. Conditions prevailing...

Structural control over well productivity in the Jundiaí River Catchment, Southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Neves,Mirna A.; Morales,Norberto.
The well productivity in crystalline terrains is extremely changeable and depends on external factors, in addition to the intrinsic properties of rocks. In the Jundiaí River Catchment, Southeastern Brazil, the main factor that influences well productivity is the existence of open discontinuities permeability in geologic environments that favor groundwater recharge. In that area, Pre-Cambrian shear and fault zones were reactivated throughout geologic time, controlling the morphostructural compartments and the Cenozoic sedimentary deposition. Superposition of productivity data and structural maps showed that more productive wells are concentrated mainly along the regional geologic structures. The structural control over well productivity is also noticeable...

Mercury bioaccumulation and isotopic relation between Trichiurus lepturus (Teleostei) and its preferred prey in coastal waters of southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
BITTAR,VANESSA T.; REZENDE,CARLOS E.; KEHRIG,HELENA A.; BENEDITTO,ANA PAULA M. DI.
The trophic transfer of total mercury (THg) and its bioaccumulation from prey species to the predator fish Trichiurus lepturus was analysed in coastal waters of southeastern Brazil to evaluate the trace element dynamic in this predator-prey system. The isotopic (δ13C and δ15N) relation between this predator and its prey allowed inferences on prey assimilation and predator feeding habits. The THg increment varied from 4.5 to 19.5 times between prey and predator, with a biomagnification power of 0.59. The prey species could be divided into three groups regarding δ15N values: i) 13.6 to 13.2‰ (juvenile conspecifics, Pellona harroweri, and Peprilus paru); ii) 12.5 to 11.8‰ (Chirocentrodon bleekerianus, Lycengraulis grossidens, and Dorytheuthis plei); and iii)...

Description of a second known Liotyphlops caissara specimen (Serpentes: Anomalepididae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
ABEGG,ARTHUR D.; AZEVEDO,WEVERTON S.; FRANCO,FRANCISCO L.; DUARTE,MARCELO R..
Abstract: We recorded a second specimen of the poorly known insular blind snake Liotyphlops caissara. This new specimen expands the morphological variation of the number of dorsal scales in the genus Liotyphlops to 296 (vs. 304 in L. wilderi) and, considering the fact that the holotype of this species was destroyed, the present specimen represents the only available L. caissara individual in zoological collections. Also, this new record constitutes the first out of type locality and expands the distribution of the species in about 40 km to the northeastern. According to IUCN criteria (B1a, b [iii]), we suggest that L. caissara be included in the “Endangered” category, since it occurs in only two insular locations and exhibits an occurrence extension of...

Movements of the bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in the Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lodi,Liliane; Wedekin,Leonardo Liberali; Rossi-Santos,Marcos Roberto; Marcondes,Milton César.
Aiming to verify the movements of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) at Rio de Janeiro State coast, southeastern Brazil, we performed a photoidentification comparison between the catalogued individuals of the Cagarras Archipelago (23° 02' S and 43° 12' W) in 2004 and 2006 (n = 26) and the images obtained (n = 179) during the Southeastern Cetaceans Expedition, conducted during months of June and November of 2005. Eight individuals (three females and five dolphins of unknown gender) identified in the Cagarras Archipelago were resighted in the Grande Island (23° 21'S and 44° 15' W), about 100 km southwestwards from Cagarras Archipelago. The observed movements include distances commonly recorded for the species elsewhere and are probably related to...

Foot-trembling behavior in Semipalmated Plover Charadrius semipalmatus reveals prey on surface of Brazilian beaches Biota Neotropica
Cestari,César.
Foot-trembling is a foraging technique normally performed by plovers and lapwings. It exposes preys, and may increase the likelihood of capture. Currently, no detailed description of this technique is available for the Semipalmated Plover Charadrius semipalmatus. This article described the foot-trembling behavior during wintering of this species in southeastern Brazilian beaches.

First record of Melanoides tuberculatus (Müller, 1774) and Biomphalaria tenagophila (d´Orbigny, 1835) on Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Santos,Sonia Barbosa dos; Miyahira,Igor Christo; Lacerda,Luiz Eduardo Macedo de.
Small populations of Melanoides tuberculatus (Müller, 1774) and Biomphalaria tenagophila (d´Orbigny, 1835), were found at Vila do Abraão, being the first record of these species to Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro. They were probably introduced after 2004, perhaps following release from aquaria. The possible spread of these species to other freshwater habitats in the island, their effects on native snails and links with public health are discussed. The record of M. tuberculatus appears to be the first for a Brazilian insular area. The recent introduction of these species offers a remarkable opportunity to monitor introduced species and to understand the invasion process in an insular stream in southeastern Brazil.

Ichthyofauna of the rio Itatinga in the Parque das Neblinas, Bertioga, São Paulo State: composition and biogeography Biota Neotropica
Serra,Jane Piton; Carvalho,Fernando Rogério de; Langeani,Francisco.
Little is known about the ichthyofauna from South American coastal plain, specially concerning the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) rivers and streams, as there are regions little explored which may have non-described or rare species. An example is the Parque das Neblinas, a Natural Patrimony Private Reserve (RPPN) in the Bertioga municipality, São Paulo state, where no ichthyofaunal study had been done before. The park's hydrography is made up by the rio Itatinga with its various tributary streams, which flow into the Itapanhaú river basin. Nine sites were sampled using sieves, seines and gill nets; 1,086 specimens of seven species, three orders and five families were captured. The most representative species were Astyanax paranae, Phalloceros...

Diet of Crenicichla britskii (Perciformes: Cichlidae) in a stream of Rio Aguapeí basin, Upper Rio Paraná system, southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gibran,Fernando Zaniolo; Ferreira,Katiane Mara; Castro,Ricardo M. C..
We qualitatively studied the gut contents of 20 specimens (36.1-71.3 mm standard length) of the pike cichlid Crenicichla britskii from a 100 m stretched second order stream running inside a small gallery forest in a large pasture area of Rio Aguapeí basin, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The diet, in terms of per cent composition, constituted primarily of aquatic insects (50%) (mostly immature forms), crustaceans (14.3%), unidentified organic material and filamentous green algae (both with 10.7%), followed by fishes and arachnids (both with 7.1%). Diet analysis indicates that C. britskii is a generalist insectivore with a relatively short digestive tube, which feeds on autochthonous items captured in a broad array of habitats such as in the water...

Structure and composition of fish assemblages from São Sebastião Channel tide pools, southwestern Atlantic Biota Neotropica
Pastro,Gabriela; Dias,Gustavo Muniz; Gibran,Fernando Zaniolo.
Abstract Organisms living in tide pools in the intertidal zone are exposed to daily and abrupt changes in temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and salinity, during tidal cycles. Fish assemblages in tide pools are usually very different from those in surrounding areas; resident species exhibit morphological and ecological adaptations to deal with such a variable environment. In this study, we described the environmental conditions and the fish diversity and composition from four tide pools at the continental margin of the São Sebastião Channel, São Sebastião (23º41'-23º54'S; 45º19'-45º30'W), in southeastern Brazil. Monthly, from January to December 2011, we sampled four tide pools (12 samples per pool), applying a standard protocol to record environmental...

We present data on species composition, relative abundance and estimated densities for leaf-litter anuran amphibians from an Atlantic Forest area within the Parque Estadual do Desengano, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, based on results of a short-term survey carried out during the winter at altitudes of 1000-1500 m. Three sampling methods were used: plot sampling, visual encounter surveys (VES; performed during the day, at the twilight, and at night), and pitfall traps. We recorded 13 species, with the direct-developer Ischnocnema parva (Girard, 1853) being the most abundant. Most frogs (ca. 90% of all individuals) sampled by VES were captured during the crepuscular and nocturnal periods. The estimated density of the local leaf-litter frog...

A ictiofauna da bacia do Rio Paraíba do Sul. Biodiversidade e padrões biogeográficos BABT
Bizerril,Carlos Roberto S. Fontenelle.
Fish fauna taxonomic composition and biogeographic informations of the Paraíba do Sul river basin are presented. Samples were taken in 75 units between January/1995 and June/1998. Species were identified and classified according its distributional pattern. Biogeographic analyses were conduced using macro, meso and micro scales. A total of 167 species were sampled, being 37 marine species. Among the marine taxa, Awaous tajasica and Oosthetus lineatus seems to spend their whole life histories in the freshwater environments. Sixteen species were introduced in the basin. Most of the native taxa inhabit the rivers’storage zone, mainly in pools. Faunistic similarities between the Paraíba do Sul river basin and other Brazilian rivers suggest that the environment...

Bone lesions in Sotalia fluviatilis (Cetacea) as a consequence of entanglement: Case report Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
RAMOS,Renata Maria Arruda; DI BENEDITTO,Ana Paula Madeira; SOUZA,Sheila Mendonça de.
The objective of the present study was to describe a set of lesions caused by entanglement of Sotalia fluviatilis accidentally captured by gillnet on July, 23, 1995, in the Northern Rio de Janeiro State (21º37'S-041º01'W), Southeastern of Brazil. The specimen presented lacerated lesions of the skin and subcutaneous tissue around the posterior extremity of the rostrum. Nylon twines were found associated to these lesions. Bone and teeth lesions were also observed in the underlying area and affected the maxillaries, pre-maxillaries and mandibles. The lesions were likely caused by non-lethal entanglement in fishing gears. Abnormalities in the growth layer pattern of the damaged teeth between the third and sixth growth layers suggest that this encounter had...

Maternal age and Down syndrome in Southeastern Brazil Braz. J. Genet.
Beiguelman,Bernardo; Krieger,Henrique; Silva,Luciana Marques da.
The proportion of maternal-age-independent patients estimated among 200 Brazilian Down syndrome children (59.6%) was significantly larger than that of maternal-age-dependent cases (40.4%). The latter proportion is the smallest observed in pertinent literature and due basically to the low mean maternal age of the population analyzed. Based on the remarkable correlation (r = 0.95) between the proportion of maternal-age-dependent patients and the mean maternal age of the general population, a simple predictive equation to estimate the proportion of maternal-age-dependent Down syndrome patients based on the mean maternal age of the general population is suggested in situations where reliable data on the incidence of this syndrome according to maternal age is...
