Hydroclimatic relationships with planktonic time series from 1975 to 1992 in the North Sea off Gravelines, France ArchiMer

Planktonic time series collected since 1975 off Gravelines, France, were analysed in the context of climatic changes. Principal component analysis and the cumulative sums method wereapplied to 30 data sets which included meteorological and hydrological parameters and planktonic descriptors. Eight groups of biological descriptors were linked to external parameters. The study of winds highlighted the importance of cyclonic and anticyclonic influences. Seven year cycles appeared clearly in air temperature and in species abundance with different trophic levels for species such as Ternora longicornis, Oikopleura dioica and Sagitta setosa, whereas an 11 yr cycle appeared for Pseudocalanus minutus. La période étudiée, novembre 1990 - octobre 1991, correspond au 13e rapport de surveillance. La puissance de fonctionnement de la centrale varie de 3.3 à 5.7 tranches. Le réchauffement moyen au rejet est 8°9 et la valeur moyenne du bromoforme de 10.3 ug/I. Le taux de recirculation de l'eau de refroidissement est estimé à 6.6 %. La multiplication des vibrions est stimulée par l'échauffement et de l'ordre d'un facteur 100 au rejet. L'impact se traduit sur le phytoplancton par un déficit en chlorophylle de 50 %. La destruction du plancton lors du transit est mise en évidence sur les cellules phytoplanctoniques. les noctiluques. les larves de Lanice. les copépodes Temora longicornis. Pseudo-nitzschia sp. diversity and seasonality in the southern North Sea, domoic acid levels and associated phytoplankton communities ArchiMer

The diversity, toxicity and seasonality of Pseudo-nitzschia sp. were investigated from February to November 2012 in the southern Bight of the North Sea (SBNS) along the French coast. The identification of Pseudo-nitzschia species in this area was addressed for the first time in this study. Our results revealed a low species richness (3 distinct species) in association with moderate (102 pg mL−1) to high (263 pg mL−1) domoic acid (DA) levels in autumn and spring, respectively. Pseudo-nitzschia succession corresponded to the dominance of P. delicatissima in April–May (86% of total diatoms) as a co-occurring species of the Phaeocystis globosa bloom. La stratégie d'étude modifiée en 1989 a pour but de cerner les impacts, par comparaison entre stations et choix d'espèces cibles. La puissance de fonctionnement de la centrale varie au cours de l'année de 4.5 à 6 tranches de 900 MW, le débit de refroidissement varie de 180 à 240 m3/sec. L' échauffement moyen du canal de rej et est de 8.9 0 C. L'eau recyclée es t estimée à 5.4 %. Sole larval supply to coastal nurseries: Interannual variability and connectivity at interregional and interpopulation scales ArchiMer

Simulating fish larval drift helps assess the sensitivity of recruitment variability to early life history. An individual-based model (IBM) coupled to a hydrodynamic model was used to simulate common sole larval supply from spawning areas to coastal and estuarine nursery grounds at the meta-population scale (4 assessed stocks), from the southern North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (Western Europe) on a 26-yr time series, from 1982 to 2007.
