Can plant DNA barcoding be implemented in species-rich tropical regions? A perspective from São Paulo State, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lima,Renato A. Ferreira de; Oliveira,Alexandre Adalardo de; Colletta,Gabriel Dalla; Flores,Thiago Bevilacqua; Coelho,Rubens L. Gayoso; Dias,Pedro; Frey,Gabriel Ponzoni; Iribar,Amaia; Rodrigues,Ricardo Ribeiro; Souza,Vinícius Castro; Chave,Jérôme.
Abstract DNA barcoding helps to identify species, especially when identification is based on parts of organisms or life stages such as seeds, pollen, wood, roots or juveniles. However, the implementation of this approach strongly depends on the existence of complete reference libraries of DNA sequences. If such a library is incomplete, DNA-based identification will be inefficient. Here, we assess if DNA barcoding can already be implemented in species-rich tropical regions. We focus on the tree flora of São Paulo state, Brazil, which contains more than 2000 tree species. Using new DNA sequence data and carefully assembled GenBank accessions, we assembled 12,113 sequences from ten different regions. The ITS, rbcL, psbA-trnH, matK and trnL regions were better...

Fishery externalities and biodiversity: Trade-offs between the viability of shrimp trawling and the conservation of Frigatebirds in French Guiana ArchiMer
Martinet, Vincent; Blanchard, Fabian.
Sustainable management of natural resources, and in particular fisheries, must take into account several conflicting objectives. This is the case in the French Guiana shrimp fishery for which profitability objectives imply a reduction in the fishing activity. On the one hand, this fishery has negative externalities on marine biodiversity due to discards. On the other hand, this fishery has positive externalities on the economy of the local community and interestingly enough on a protected seabird species in the area (the Frigatebird that feeds on discards). In this paper, we examine the viability of that system considering two sustainability objectives: an economic objective in terms of the profitability of the fishing activity, and a conservation...

Is the population of Crotalus durissus (Serpentes, Viperidae) expanding in Brazil? J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Duarte,Marcelo Ribeiro; Menezes,Frederico Alcântara.
Crotalus durissus are found from Mexico to northern Argentina in a highly disjunct distribution. According to some studies, this species is prone to occupy areas disturbed by human activities and floods comprise a plausible method of dispersal as inferred for some North American rattlesnakes. Based on the literature, it seems plausible that Crotalus durissus expanded their natural distribution in Brazil due to floods, but only in a few municipalities in Rio de Janeiro State. Data entries of Butantan Institute, in São Paulo, Brazil, from 1998 to 2012 show a declining tendency of snakes brought by donors. In addition, research shows no evidence of Crotalus durissus being an expanding species in the Brazilian territory.

Roadkill and new records for giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus) in central-western Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.
Hannibal,Wellington; da Cunha,Nicolay L; Dalponti,Guilherme; Oliveira,Seixas R; Pereira,Katia R. F.
Despite the widespread distribution of the giant armadillo Priodontes maximus, this species is found at low densities, often in disrupted populations. Here we report 12 new records, including five incidents of roadkill of P. maximus in different points of the Cerrado and one in an Atlantic Forest fragment in central-western Brazil. In addition to the relevant records, we discuss the negative effects of roadkills, which is a serious issue for the conservation and maintenance of local populations of giant armadillo.

Confronting Uncertainty and Missing Values in Species Conservation Investment with Environmental Value Transfer AgEcon
Akter, Sonia; Grafton, R. Quentin.
Decision tools for species conservation, such as benefit cost analysis (BCA) and project prioritization protocol (PPP) use monetary values to measure benefits or to assign priorities across species. Non-use (or passive) values are an important, yet difficult to quantify, category of benefits. When not estimated they may be assigned a zero value by decision makers. This results in the under-provision of conservation dollars to substantial non-use values generating projects and actions. To overcome the problem, we provide a guide to environmental value transfer (EVT) that allows decision makers to derive indirect estimates of non-use values. Environmental value transfer, together with consideration of estimated benefits uncertainty, promise better decision...

Seasonal flight and resource collection patterns of colonies of the stingless bee Melipona bicolor schencki Gribodo (Apidae, Meliponini) in an Araucaria forest area in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Ferreira Junior,Ney Telles; Blochtein,Betina; Moraes,João Feliz de.
Melipona bicolor schencki occurs in southern Brazil and at high elevations in southeastern Brazil. It has potential for use in meliponiculture but this stingless bee species is vulnerable to extinction and we have little knowledge about its ecology. In order to gather essential information for species conservation and management, we made a study of seasonal flight activities in its natural environment. We sampled bees entering the nests with pollen, nectar/water and resin/mud, in five colonies during each season. In parallel, we analyzed the influence of hour of the day and meteorological factors on flight activity. Flights were most intense during spring and summer, with daily mean estimates of 2,100 and 2,333 flights respectively, while in fall and...

Leaf area estimation of Anacardium humile Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Gomes,Francielly Rodrigues; Silva,Danielle Fabíola Pereira da; Ragagnin,Angelita Lorrayne Soares Lima; Souza,Pedro Henrique Magalhães de; Cruz,Simério Carlos Silva.
Abstract The Anacardium humile A. St.- Hil. fruit tree has productive potential, being their fruits appreciated in the Cerrado region for having characteristic flavor, however, this species is still exploited in an extractive way, being necessary studies for its domestication. The aim of this work was to estimate the leaf area of Anacardium humile. One hundred leaves were collected in the biological collection from a genetic resources field and evaluated for length, width and fresh weight, and scanned at resolution of 300 dpi to determine the leaf area with the aid of the ImageJ image analysis program. Subsequently, a leaf disc with a diameter of 22.27 mm was detached at the basal portion of each leaf, in which the fresh weight of the discs was obtained....

Germination and sporophytic development of Regnellidium diphyllum Lindm. (Marsileaceae) in the presence of copper Acta Botanica
Cassanego,Mara Betânia Brizola; Goldoni,Angélica; Heldt,Fágner Henrique; Osório,Daniela Montanari Migliavacca; Windisch,Paulo Günter; Droste,Annette.
Regnellidium diphyllum Lindm. is a heterosporous fern growing in wetlands and humid soils that are being converted to agricultural activities. Many products that are used in agriculture contain copper, resulting in surface and groundwater contamination. Germination and initial development tests were performed using Meyer's solution containing copper sulphate at concentrations of 0 (control), 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 mg L-1. The experiment was conducted in a growth chamber at 25 ± 1ºC for 28 days, with a 12/12-hour light/dark cycle and a photon flux density of 100 µmol m-2 s-1. The lowest germination rate (6%) was observed at 100 mg L-1. Primary root growth was significantly reduced at > 10 mg L-1. Secondary leaves of sporophytes grown in concentrations >...

Engineering biodiversity as a model for the species conservation Anais da ABC (AABC)
RECH,ELIBIO L..
Abstract: Early humans have domesticated plant and animal species based on ancient empirical concepts (Darwin 1868, 1876). In 1886, Mendel established a new paradigm of hereditary laws (Mendel 1866, 1870, 1950) based on genotypic and phenotypic traits of cross-compatible species, establishing a complex breeding technology that is currently utilized for the development of most food and livestock-derived products. Recently, studies on deciphering the double-helical structure (Watson and Crick 1953a, b) and how to restrict DNA (Arber 2012) have established the foundation of recombinant DNA technology. A new era is paving the way for genetic manipulation of important traits among all the kingdom’s organisms, allowing for the development of innovative and...
