Vineyard water status assessment using on-the-go thermal imaging and machine learning Organic Eprints
Gutiérrez, S.; Diago, M.P; Fernandez-Novales, J.; Tardaguila, J..
The high impact of irrigation in crop quality and yield in grapevine makes the development of plant water status monitoring systems an essential issue in the context of sustainable viticulture. This study presents an on-the-go approach for the estimation of vineyard water status using thermal imaging and machine learning. The experiments were conducted during seven different weeks from July to September in season 2016. A thermal camera was embedded on an all-terrain vehicle moving at 5 km/h to take on-the-go thermal images of the vineyard canopy at 1.2 m of distance and 1.0 m from the ground. The two sides of the canopy were measured for the development of side-specific and global models. Stem water potential was acquired and used as reference method....

Framework in Agriculture on the Farm Level Organic Eprints
Haas, G.; Wetterich, F.; Geier, U..
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method that can be used to assess the environmental impact of agriculture, but impact categories and the functional unit of classical LCA’s must be adapted to the specific agricultural production process. Serving as an example, the framework of a LCA of 18 grassland dairy farms covering three farming intensity levels and carried out in the Allgäu region in southern Germany is presented. By focussing on the chosen impact categories and the respective, suitable functional units, the specific needs and backgrounds of conducting an agricultural LCA are discussed in general. aus: Haas, G. und Wetterich, F. und Geier, U. Earthworm sampling Organic Eprints
Peigne, Joséphine; Huber, Kathrin; Pfiffner, Lukas.
Earthworms are key organisms and indicators of soil quality, which also links to the productivity of an ecosystem. The higher the earthworm density and diversity, the better the earthworm’s living conditions and the more fertile is the soil. They are relatively easy to detect and determine into three ecological groups. The number and distribution of the three ecological categories and the numerous earthworm species depends on soil management, soil type, the Vegetation and climate conditions. In this technical note, various methods how to sample, measure and interpret earthworms are shown.

Auswahl von Feldversuchsflächen auf heterogenem Auenboden: Bestandeskartierung - Uniformitätsernten - Luftbildaufnahmen - Exaktvermessung Organic Eprints
Haas, Guido.

Monitoring nutrient turnover during composting has to be based on a constant reference parameter. Is total ash content really a good choice? Organic Eprints
Raupp, Dr Joachim.
The total ash content is usually considered to be fairly constant during the composting period, apart from addition of minerals by precipitation and losses by seepage. However, our field trials with farmyard manure have shown that the ash fraction insoluble in hydrochloric acid increased much more than the soluble fraction in the same time. If changes are merely caused by composting intensity (e.g. organic matter degradation), both fractions should be accumulated in the same degree. It is hypothesized that the higher rise of the HCl-insoluble fraction indicates a higher amount of soil material in the heaps at the end compared to the beginning of composting, as the insoluble fraction originates mainly in soil-borne silicates while the soluble fraction is...

Microbial Community Structure and Litter Decomposition in Stratified Soils of a Long Term Reduced Tillage Experiment Organic Eprints
Suhadolc, M.; Baškovč, M.; Kaurin, A.; Kastelec, D.; Mihelič, R..
The aim of the present study was to examine decomposition of plant material (maize straw, green and rooibos tea) in stratified soils of the long-term tillage experiment, established in 1999 and shifted from conventional to organic farming system in 2015. The plowing in conventional tillage (CT) has been done by moldboard plow 20 cm deep, while in minimum tillage (MT), soil disturbance has been up to 10 cm deep by a Special disc harrow. More than 15 years of long term Minimum tillage, with reduced soil disturbances and improved residue management, resulted in stratification of soil organic carbon and nutrients with highest concentrations in the very topsoil.

Long-term organic crop rotation experiments for cereal production – yield development and dynamics Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Rasmussen, Ilse A..
A crop rotation experiment was established in 1996/97 at three locations representing different soil types and climates. Three factors were tested: i) crop rotation with different proportions of N2-fixing crops, ii) with and without a catch crop, and iii) with and without animal manure. A green manure crop increased yields in the following cereal crops, but at the rotational level, total yields were larger in crop rotations without a green manure crop. There were positive effects of animal manure and catch crops on yield. However, except for the coarse sandy soil, the yield effects of catch crops and animal manure decreased over time when a grass-clover green manure was included in the rotation. It appeared that the buffering effect of clover can...

Studying conversion as a human activity system Organic Eprints
Padel, Susan.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Farmers convert to organic farming for a variety of reasons including environmental concerns, problems with conventional systems, and personal and financial reasons. They also vary in their management styles. These personal characteristics are rarely considered as explaining variables in comparative studies of farming systems, because of the contrasting methods used to evaluate personal objectives and attitudes as opposed to farm activities. Farming should be seen as a human activity system, in which people actively manage some natural resources, for the purpose of producing output, influenced by their subjective values and attitudes. The Farming Systems Research (FSR) approach aims to...

Untersuchungen zu Nahrungsangebot und -aufnahme von Legehennen aus dem Grünauslauf Organic Eprints
Schwichtenberg, Marcel; Hörning, Bernhard; Hanika, Andrej; Trei, Gerriet.

Comparisons of organic and conventional maize and tomato cropping systems from a long-term experiment in California Organic Eprints
Kaffka, Stephen; Bryant, Dennis; Denison, Ford.
Yield differences and trends, organic matter accumulation, and the loss of nutrients to deeper soil horizons are discussed using data from organic and conventional maize/tomato cropping systems from the Long Term Research on Agricultural Systems Project (LTRAS) at the University of California, Davis. Compared to the conventional system, higher and increasing yields of tomatoes were observed in organic systems, but lower yields of maize. Fruit quality, measured as soluble solids, was not significantly different. Soil organic matter increased in the organic system, but remained stable in the conventional one. More irrigation water was used in the organic system than in the conventional one due to higher rates of infiltration, but less winter runoff...

What drives farmers’ sustainability performance? Application of the CSP Modell for the analysis of farmers’ Conditions, adaptation Strategies and sustainability Performances – a case study analysis of German and Swedish producer groups in times of change Organic Eprints
Münchhausen, von, Susanne; Knickel, Karlheinz; Milestad, Rebecka; Lasner, Tobias.
This paper aims to explore farmers' conditions, strategies and performances in a context of multi-dimensional policy requirements, market imperfections and globalisation. The basic assumption sees conditions as drivers for farmers’ strategies that then result in performances of the sector. The methodological approach is based on the Conditions-Strategies-Performances (CSP) model which is used for the analysis of three case studies. The model helps to identify changes in framework conditions over time, resources among relevant groups of primary producers, adaptation strategies and finally, to explore the related social, economic and environmental effects. The analysis is based on three case studies, three farmers’ groups in Germany and Sweden. Results show...
