An ultrastructural study of spermiogenesis in two species of Sitophilus: Coleoptera: Curculionidae 47
Name,Khesller Patrícia Olázia; Dos Reis,Giuliano Pagy Felipe; Báo,Sônia Nair.
The spermiogenesis of Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilus oryzae, the maize and the rice weevil, respectively, was studied by light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Sitophilus spp. is the most widespread and destructive primary pest of stored cereals in the world. The spermiogenesis occurs within cysts. There are approximately 256 germ line cells per cyst. Inside each cysts, all the spermatids are in the same stage of maturation. The ultrastructure of the spermatozoa of S. zeamais and S. oryzae is similar to that described for other beetles. The head is formed by a three-layered acrosome with the perforatorium, the acrosomal vesicle, the extra-acrosomal layer and the nucleus. The flagellum has the typical axoneme formed by a...

Morphological study of the spermatogenesis in the teleost Piaractus mesopotamicus 47
da Cruz-Landim,Carminda; Camargo Abdalla,Fábio; da Cruz-Höfling,Maria Alice.
The spermatogenesis of Piaractus mesopotamicus was investigated under light and transmission electron microscopy. The specimens were captured from their natural environment (Rio Miranda and Rio Aquidauana, Pantanal Matogrossense, Brazil) during April and September. The results were compared with the spermatogenic data of specimens under captivity condition. In both conditions, P. mesopotamicus presented the typical spermatogenesis pattern of the teleost fishes, showing no significative differences. The spermatozoon was classified as type I, which has a globular head without acrosome, a short middle piece and a long tail constituted only by the flagellum. This type of spermatozoon is considered the basic type in fishes.

Targeting and fusion proteins during mammalian spermiogenesis 48
RAMALHO-SANTOS,JOÃO; MORENO,RICARDO D..
Regulated exocytosis is controlled by internal and external signals. The molecular machinery controlling the sorting from the newly synthesized vesicles from the Golgi apparatus to the plasma membrane play a key role in the regulation of both the number and spatial location of the vesicles. In this context the mammalian acrosome is a unique vesicle since it is the only secretory vesicle attached to the nucleus. In this work we have studied the membrane trafficking between the Golgi apparatus and the acrosome during mammalian spermiogenesis. During bovine spermiogenesis, Golgi antigens (mannosidase II) were detected in the acrosome until the late cap-phase spermatids, but are not found in testicular spermatozoa (maturation-phase spermatids). This suggests...

Ultrastructural Aspects of Spermatids in Isogenic Black Mouse C57BL6J 77
Fernandes Boaro Martins,Márcia Regina; Carvalho Pinto e Silva,José Ricardo de.
The objective of this study was to describe some changes in spermatids differentiating events during spermiogenesis, leading to spermatozoa final formation. The animals were sacrificed with ethylic acid inhalation and, then, testis fragments were collected, fixed in Karnovsky and post-fixed in osmium tetroxide. After dehydration, the sections were stained with uranyl acetate 2%. It was observed in early spermatids at Golgi phase, formation of acrosomal granule contained in the acrosomal vesicle, spheroidal nucleus with rugous reticulum around it, and Golgi apparatus made up of lamellae and vesicular structures. At cephalic hood phase, the granule suffers flattening and the marginal fossa is formed. In both phases, it was possible to observe the presence of...

Spermatic characteristics and sperm evolution on the subfamily Stevardiinae (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae) 83
Baicere-Silva,Clarianna Martins; Ferreira,Katiane M.; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Benine,Ricardo C.; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani.
The monophyly and phylogenetic relationships among the members of Clade A characids (sensu Malabarba & Weitzman), later redefined and named as the Stevardiinae (sensu Mirande), have been primarily supported by traditional morphological and molecular data. Herein were examined, described and compared spermiogenesis and sperm ultrastructure of 12 species of the genera Boehlkea, Bryconacidnus, Bryconamericus, Creagrutus, Cyanocharax, Hemibrycon, Knodus, Odontostoechus, Piabina, and Rhinobrycon in order to evaluate possible phylogenetic signals and their potential use in recovering relationships of the Stevardiinae. All examined species demonstrated a nuclear rotation equal or less than 95º resulting in a lateral position of the double nuclear fossa...

Markiana nigripinnis (Perugia, 1891) as a putative member of the subfamily Stevardiinae (Characiformes: Characidae): spermatic evidence 83
Baicere-Silva,Clarianna Martins; Benine,Ricardo C.; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani.
The genus Markiana was until recently recognized as incertae sedis in the family Characidae, even though alternative placements for this genus have been advanced since its original description. More recently, it was hypothesized that Markiana nigripinnis is part of a clade informally named the Astyanax clade, indicating the putative close relationship of Markiana with the genus Astyanax. Examination of sperm ultrastructure of representatives of Astyanax and M. nigripinnis shows no evidence for this hypothesized close relationship. Rather, the spermatozoa of M. nigripinnis share characters found in spermatozoa of the non-inseminating members of the subfamily Stevardiinae, such as an angle of nuclear rotation equal to 85º resulting in a lateral position of...
