Morphometry of Vertebral Pedicles: a Comprehensive Anatomical Study in the Lumbar Region International Journal of Morphology
Prakash,; Prabhu,Latha V; Vadgaonkar,Rajanigandha; Pai,Mángala M; Ranade,Anu V; Singh,Gajendra.
This comprehensive anatomical study on bones and X-rays regarding pedicles of lumbar vertebrae was performed in two parts. In the first part of the present work direct gross measurements of 3 different diameters (v, d, and 1) of both the pedicles of LI to L5 vertebrae (200 male and 200 female) were recorded through sliding vernier caliper. In the second part plain anteroposterior radiographs of the lumbar spine from 500 individuals (250 males and 250 females) were collected, and divided in 6 age groups and 2 different diameters (t and h) were recorded. The minimum horizontal diameter (d) of both the pedicles increased from LI to L5. Whereas, the vertical height (v) of both the pedicles increased from LI to L2, decreased from L2 to L3 and increased from L3...

Anatomical Characteristics of Deer and Sheep Lumbar Spines: Comparison to the Human Lumbar Spine International Journal of Morphology
Wang,Yang; Liu,Ting; Song,Liang-Song; Zhang,Zhi-Xin; Li,You-Qiong; Lu,Lai-Jin.
Deer and sheep spines are often used as models of the human spine. A prerequisite for the use of animal models is information regarding the interspecies differences in the parameters of general interest. This would clarify the limitations of each animal model and substantiate the applicability of the obtained results to humans. Since sufficient data appear to be currently unavailable, we sought to investigate the feasibility of using deer and sheep as animal models for studies on the human spine. The objective of this study was a thorough comparison of the anatomical parameters of deer and sheep spines with those of the human spine. We employed three-dimensional reconstructions of computed tomography images, generated using figure analysis software, which...

Hemolytic activity of venom from crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci spines J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Lee,Chi-Chiu; Tsai,Wann-Sheng; Hsieh,Hernyi Justin; Hwang,Deng-Fwu.
Background : The crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci is a venomous species from Taiwan whose venom provokes strong hemolytic activity. To understand the hemolytic properties of A. planci venom, samples were collected from A. planci spines in the Penghu Islands, dialyzed with distilled water, and lyophilized into A. planci spine venom (ASV) powder. Results : Both crude venom and ASV cause 50% hemolysis at a concentration of 20 μg/mL. The highest hemolytic activity of ASV was measured at pH 7.0-7.4; ASV-dependent hemolysis was sharply reduced when the pH was lower than 3 or greater than 8. There was almost no hemolytic activity when the Cu2+ concentration was increased to 10 mM. Furthermore, incubation at 100°C for 30 to 60 minutes sharply decreased...

Production of thornless Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus Pax. et K. Hoffm. progenies from open pollinated native trees PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Candeia, Brígida Lima; Bakke, Olaf Andreas; Ariel, Éder F.; Bakke, Ivonete A..
Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus (faveleira), a caatinga xerophyte Euphorbiaceae tree, produces proteinrichforage consumed by ruminants. It should be used carefully due to urticaceous thorns in leaves, fine branches and fruits, and antinutritional substances present in fresh material. The narrow gene pool of the few thornless mutants should be widened by additional thornless individuals grown from open-pollinated seeds. This study checked the potential of six thorny and three thornless open-pollinated native trees in a caatinga site to produce thornless progenies, and estimated the proportion of their thornless progenies. The trial took place at the seed laboratory and seedling nursery facilities of UFCG/UAEF, Patos-PB, Brazil, from March 2002 to November 2003,...

Myelography in calves: a comparative study between the contrast agents iopamidol and iohexol Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bueno,G.M.; Girardi,A.M.; Módolo,T.J.C.; Sabes,A.F.; Oliveira,J.A.; Marques,L.C..
ABSTRACT Due to the scarcity of myelogenous studies in cattle, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and distribution of iopamidol and iohexol contrast agents in calves, in order to determine guidelines for obtaining diagnostic radiographs of spinal cord disorders in these animals. Ten healthy Holstein calves, seven days to two months of age, were divided into two groups, according to the contrast medium applied. Myelographic studies of the spine were performed with the calves in lateral recumbency, with radiographs repeated 20 times during a two-hour period. On the radiographs, the contrast medium was analyzed for opacity, detail of the image, distension of the medullary canal, and progression of the contrast line. After seven days, the...

Translation, adaptation and validation of the Roland-Morris questionnaire - Brazil Roland-Morris BJMBR
Nusbaum,L.; Natour,J.; Ferraz,M.B.; Goldenberg,J..
The purpose of the present study was to translate the Roland-Morris (RM) questionnaire into Brazilian-Portuguese and adapt and validate it. First 3 English teachers independently translated the original questionnaire into Brazilian-Portuguese and a consensus version was generated. Later, 3 other translators, blind to the original questionnaire, performed a back translation. This version was then compared with the original English questionnaire. Discrepancies were discussed and solved by a panel of 3 rheumatologists and the final Brazilian version was established (Brazil-RM). This version was then pretested on 30 chronic low back pain patients consecutively selected from the spine disorders outpatient clinic. In addition to the traditional clinical outcome...
