The index used by France to assess the quality of coastal water bodies of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), for the Channel-Atlantic coast and for the quality element "soft substratum benthic invertebrates" is the M-AMBI. In their work, Sigovini et al. (2013) compare several methods of calculating M-AMBI and alternative indices with the values of M-AMBI. Their results show strong correlations between the values of the M-AMBI and those of the proposed alternatives. In a first step, the present work aims to compare M-AMBI values, obtained during the application of the assessment procedure of the quality of coastal water bodies for the Channel-Atlantic coast on the 2007 and 2010 data, with the values obtained for various alternative calculations and...

Evolution de l’activité des flottilles ciblant le Lieu noir en Mer du Nord. Quels impacts sur les captures par unité d’effort de pêche de la flottille de tuning ? ArchiMer
Faillettaz, Robin.
The 2011’s stock assessment pointed out an important decrease in the biomass of the North Sea saithe within 2009, while it was regarded for several years as a symbol of the sustainable management of the North Sea stocks. Meanwhile, an increasing spatial competition with other fleets has been reported since 2008 in the North of Shetland, where the majority of catches occur. This study was carried out to confirm and assess the extent of the changes in the distribution of fishing effort and to define if it could be linked to the collapse of the Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) in 2009. Exploratory analyses were held to calibrate the tuning fleet and to identify areas of the North Sea specific to certain species. These factors were then used as explanatory...

Standardization proposal for the mapping of Caulerpa taxifolia expansion in the Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
De Vaugelas, Jean; Meinesz, Alexandre; Antolic, Boris; Ballesteros, Enrique; Belsher, Thomas; Cassar, Nicolas; Ceccherelli, Giulia; Cinelli, Francesco; Cottalorda, Jean-michel; Orestano, Carla Fradà; Grau, Antoni; Jaklin, Andrej; Morucci, Carlo; Relini, Marco; Sandulli, Roberto; Span, Ante; Tripaldi, Giuseppe; Van Klaveren, Patrick; Zavodnik, Nevenka; Zuljevic, Ante.
Fourteen years after the first observation of Caulerpa taxifolia (Valh) C. Agardh in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, this green alga of tropical origin is now present in five countries (Spain, France, Monaco, Italy and Croatia). By the end of 1997, more than 46 km(2), at depths of between 0 and 50 m, were found to be affected by this expansion. A standardization of the cartographic procedure is proposed here. Such a standardization is necessary to compare maps produced by various organizations from different countries. For a given independent station, it is based on the definition of three levels of colonization:Level I refers to a station where one or several colonies less than 100 m apart cover a total surface area inferior to 1000 m(2):Level II...

Deep roots in culture, shallow roots in nature: Identifying sustainable bamboo management challenges for China and the implications for multidisciplinary research AgEcon
Buckingham, Kathleen.
The Chinese government is moving towards market mechanisms to promote environmental sustainability. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a globally recognised label gaining ground within Non Timber Forest Product markets (NTFP). Standardization and replicability have become essential in order to make the local manageable. The FSC has been described as a ‘boundary object’, creating new governance networks outside the authority of government, creating or adapting verification practices to ‘join together heterogeneous resources.’ The bamboo sector is one of the fastest growing forest land uses in China. Intensification of management has led to biodiversity loss, erosion and depletion of soil nutrients. Bamboo is rooted deeply in Chinese culture, through...
