Strassner, Carola.
As in previous years the annual meeting on organic certification in the out-of-home sector took place at the congress of the BioFach Trade Fair, on the 22nd of February 2009. As a conclusion to this meeting this report now summarizes the main topics of the “European Forum for Certification” with the focus on the presentations in Nuremberg. The presenters delivered insight into the various situations in their countries and indicated the challenges that they currently are dealing with. Depictions included developments in Belgium, Finland, Italy, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and The Netherlands. After describing and discussing the issues the country presenters agreed to have this paper developed by the organisers, which gives a short overview of the...

Innovative Research for Organic 3.0 - Proceedings of the Scientific Track Organic Eprints
The future challenges in food production and consumption appear clear: - Feed 9 to 11 billion people in the next 30 to 80 years with enough, affordable and healthy food. - Protect the environment (e.g. soils, water, air, biodiversity and landscapes) whilst increasingly under pressure to achieve greater levels of intensification. - Mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change in all farming systems and value chains. - Incorporate novel ethics, food habits, demographics and lifestyles into the food chains. - Produce food on limited farmland and fossil (non-renewable) resources efficiently and profitably. Several findings from scientific research and practical applications suggest that organic food and farming systems can help in...

The New Organics Logo for Europe Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Europe has a new organics logo from 1 July 2010. The new logo is mandated for all organic produce of Europe. The new logo is the product of a Europe-wide competition which attracted 3,422 entries, of which three were shortlisted and subjected to an internet vote. The new logo is text-free. It does not replace the plethora of certifier-specific logos currently used by Europe's certifiers, instead, it will appear in conjunction with certifier logos. When presented with this logo, half of respondents recognised the new logo as a leaf; others reported that it looked like a shooting star (17%), a fish (10%), stars (7%), other (7%), and 'don't know (10%).

Multi-elemental fingerprinting of plant tissue by semi-quantitative ICP-MS and chemometrics Organic Eprints
Laursen, Kristian Holst; Hansen, Thomas Hesselhøj; Persson, Daniel Pergament; Schjørring, Jan Kofod; Husted, Søren.
The multi-elemental capacity of Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is rarely fully utilized in traditional full-quantitative analysis. The main obstacles are limited availability of multi-elemental standards and the need for time-consuming external calibrations. In this study, a novel semi-quantitative quadrupole ICP-MS based method for multi-elemental fingerprinting of plant tissue was developed as a high-throughput alternative to full-quantitative analysis. The main analytical objectives were low data acquisition time (<60 seconds), detailed coverage of the atomic mass range from 7Li to 238U and discrimination power similar to full-quantitative analysis based on chemometric data analysis. The method was tested on grains of different...

Compound-Specific δ15N and δ13C Analyses of Amino Acids for Potential Discrimination between Organically and Conventionally Grown Wheat Organic Eprints
Paolini, M.; Ziller, L.; Laursen, K.H.; Husted, S.; Camin, F..
We present a study deploying compound-specific nitrogen and carbon isotope analysis of amino acids to discriminate between organically and conventionally grown plants. We focused on grain samples of common wheat and durum wheat grown using synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, animal manures, or green manures from nitrogen-fixing legumes. The measurement of amino acid δ15N and δ13C values, after protein hydrolysis and derivatization, was carried out using gas chromatography−combustion−isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS). Our results demonstrated that δ13C of glutamic acid and glutamine in particular, but also the combination of δ15N and δ13C of 10 amino acids, can improve the discrimination between conventional and organic wheat compared to stable...

Increasing fat goat Organic Eprints
Van Eekeren, Nick.
Organic goat milk is for the majority (90%) converted into cheese and exported. The protein and fat content of goat milk largely determine the cheese yield and thus the milk. Since these levels may fluctuate between 7.5 and 11 liters of goat milk are needed to produce 1 kg of cheese to make. Also gives a lower fat content, a more crumbly cheese, especially in soft cheeses. Organic goat would therefore like more opportunities to send to the levels in milk. In this BioKennis article more about the factors that determine the fat content and tips for goat farmers.

Final report for the CORE Organic II funded project - Fast methods for authentication of organic plant based foods - AuthenticFood Organic Eprints
Husted, Søren.
In AuthenticFood a wide range of analytical methods have been developed and validated for authentication of organic plant products. These have been applied to plant samples from Danish and Italian field trials and independent test-set samples. It has been shown that several analytical methods have the potential to authenticate the geographical and/or the agricultural origin of plant products. Elemental fingerprint analysis is particularly suitable for revealing where a plant has been grown due to the inherently different soil mineralogy of geographical locations across Europe. When zooming in on individual elements by stable isotope analysis it is also possible to reveal how a plant has been fertilized – especially when focusing on isotopes of specific...

Local and organic foods have been on the political agenda in Finland especially since 2010. There is increasing demand for local and organic food products among professional kitchens, and potatoes and potato products are among the most commonly used locally produced food stuffs. However, the supply of organic potato is quite low. The aim of this study was to investigate through a survey the present situation concerning the use of locally produced potatoes and potato products in professional kitchens in Northern Ostrobothnia and their interest and need for organic potatoes and potato products. In addition, the potential of increasing organic potato production was studied through two surveys. Majority of kitchens under study were interested in using organic...

Multielemental fingerprinting as a tool for authentication of organic wheat, barley, faba bean and potato Organic Eprints
Laursen, Kristian Holst; Schjoerring, Jan K.; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Askegaard, Margrethe; Halekoh, Ulrich; Husted, Søren.
The multielemental composition of organic and conventional winter wheat, spring barley, faba bean, and potato was analyzed with inductively coupled plasma−optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and −mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The crops were cultivated in two years at three geographically different field locations, each accommodating one conventional and two organic cropping systems. The conventional system produced the highest harvest yields for all crops except the nitrogen-fixing faba bean, whereas the dry matter content of each crop was similar across systems. No systematic differences between organic and conventional crops were found in the content of essential plant nutrients when statistically analyzed individually. However, chemometric analysis of...

Authentication of organically grown plants – advantages and limitations of atomic spectroscopy for multi-element and stable isotope analysis Organic Eprints
Laursen, K.H.; Schjoerring, J.K.; Kelly , S.D.; Husted, S..
Organic food products are believed to be healthier, safer and more environment-friendly than their conventional counterparts and are sold at premium prices. Consequently, adulteration of organic plants and fraudulent activities for economic profit are increasing. This has spurred the development of sophisticated analytical procedures for testing authenticity. We review the use of multi-element and stable-isotope analysis based on atomic spectroscopy for discriminating between organic and conventional plants. We conclude that inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, stable-isotope analysis of bulk plant tissue, and compound-specific isotope analysis based on isotope ratio-mass spectrometry are promising tools for documenting the fertilization history...
