Food supply is considered critical for a successful culturing of decapod larvae. However, some species may present yolk reserve sufficient to complete their larval development without external food supply (known as lecithotrophic larval development). In the present study, two experiments were carried out in order to verify whether the callianassid Lepidophthalmus siriboia have lecithotrophic behaviour or, if they need external food for their larval development: Experiment 1, larvae submitted to an initial feeding period and Experiment 2, larvae submitted to an initial starvation period. The present study investigated whether the callianassid Callichirus major shows a lecithotrophic behaviour during larval development. Two experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, larvae were subjected to an initial period of feeding, while in the second they were subjected to an initial period of starvation. In Experiment 1, 80% of C. major larvae succeeded moulting to juvenile stage in treatment with larvae fed every day. In the treatments with larvae fed for 1, 2 and 3 days there was total mortality before they reached the megalopal stage. In Experiment 2, zoea larvae showed more resistance when subjected to an initial period of starvation in which larvae starved for 1, 2 and 3 days and had survival rates of 100, 60 and 80%, respectively.... |

Hoplias malabaricus (traíra) were experimentally starved (0 to 240 days) and subsequently re-fed for 30 days (after 90 and 240-d fasting). Long-term starvation produced minor changes in muscle composition, but shrinkage of muscle fibres was a conspicuous result. The diameter of muscle fibres decreased gradually and the spaces among them increased as the starvation period progressed. After re-feeding, fish prior starved for 90 days presented partial restoration on diameter of muscle fibres. However, the fibres remained shrunken after re-feeding following 240-d fasting. While the lipid content did not change, the protein levels fell after 240-d fasting, but they were restored after re-feeding |

Larval development of Hoplias cf. lacerdae was studied under laboratory conditions. After hatching, ontogenetic changes were recorded on food-deprived larvae in 12-hour intervals. Mouth opening occurred after 2.5 days and notochord terminated flexure in 6.5 days. Notochord length increased at a constant rate until complete yolk absorption (13,5 days). Larval dry weight and body height diminished gradually up to 21 days after hatching, when all starved larvae died. Every 12 hours after yolk absorption, groups of larvae (n=15), were separeted, and fed with Artemia nauplii for 10 days. The point-of-no-return (when 50% of larvae were unable to feed or to assimilate ingested food after delayed feeding), was not apparent in this species. |

In the present study, the histological-based condition of common sole (Solea solea) larvae in the English Channel was evaluated to assess the relevance of experimentally-calibrated indices for wild collected specimens. Based on topographical observation of foregut, midgut, hindgut, liver and pancreas, each of the 202 larvae analysed was attributed one of the six grades of a condition index that was developed for sole in the nineties. In the natural environment bivalve larvae are exposed to variable conditions and can therefore face periods of food shortage. To understand the resistance of early life stages of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas), larvae were experimentally starved for 4 days at different periods of their development, and the resulting variations in their lipid reserves then analysed using image analysis and biochemical techniques. Members of the short neuropeptide F (sNPF) family of peptides and their cognate receptors play key roles in a variety of physiological processes in arthropods. In silico screening of GigasDatabase, a specific expressed sequence tag database from the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, resulted in the identification of a receptor (CgsNPFR-like) phylogenetically closely related to sNPF receptors (sNPFRs) of insects. Some mechanisms of selection which operate on marine Vibrio and Pseudomonas strains during survival in dilute environments have been examined. Mannitol uptake and utilisation systems are more efficient in the Vibrio strain compared with the Pseudomonas strain during starvation survival. A Vibrio mutant strain lacking mannitol uptake showed no greater loss of viability during starvation survival than mannitol positive strains. The Vibrio strain appears to be constitutive with respect to mannitol uptake systems, whereas the Pseudomonas strain examined is inducible. ABSTRACT The effects of the timing of first feeding on the point-of-no-return (PNR) and growth of laboratory reared silver catfish Rhamdia voulezi larvae were studied. The experiment began immediately after the complete absorption of the yolk sac, 3 days after hatching (DAH). The food was provided for the first time on 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th DAH. Zooplankton and newly-hatched Artemia spp. were used to feed the larvae. To evaluate the effect of food deprivation on growth, the standard length and weight of 594 larvae were assessed.
