WEAR QUANTIFICATION OF BASAL CUTTING KNIVES IN SUGARCANE HARVESTING REA
Paixão,Carla S. S.; Voltarelli,Murilo A.; Oliveira,Luan P. de; Bernache,Leonardo; Silva,Rouverson P. da.
ABSTRACT The mechanized harvesting of sugarcane has increased exponentially in recent years because of the gradual prohibition of burning on the cane fields in mechanizable and non-mechanizable areas. This study aimed to evaluate the wear of the basal cutting knives in two different mechanized sugarcane harvesters, through statistical process control. The experiment was conducted in Cravinhos, São Paulo, in an agricultural area, on July 25, 26, and 27, 2016. Two harvesters with different basal cutting mechanisms were evaluated: harvester A—Model BE1035e (conventional type knife), and harvester B—Model A8800 (racket type knife). The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments. The wear was quantified by measuring the thickness increase...

ABSTRACT In Brazil, a large portion of peanut production is found under conventional soil preparation. Due to the fact that there is a lack in studies related to the cultivation of peanuts in conservationists soil preparation, mainly in the field of losses and mechanized harvesting. Thus, it was aimed to assess the quality of digging and gathering operation of peanut, based on losses, using statistical process control techniques in two tillages. The sowing was carried out under conventional and conservationist preparation, revolving only the sowing line. Losses were evaluated in the digging and gathering operation, being that in the gathering it was evaluated the harvest losses in three displacement speeds (4, 6 and 8 km h-1) in two tillages. The quality...

SHIFTS AND HARVESTING SYSTEMS ON QUALITY OF IMPURITIES SAMPLES IN SUGARCANE REA
Alcantara,Aline S.; Ormond,Antonio T. S.; Sousa Júnior,Paulo R. de; Silva,Rouverson P. da; Kazama,Elizabeth H..
ABSTRACT Semi-mechanical and mechanical harvesting methods may influence the content of impurities in harvested sugarcane. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of three mechanical methods of sugarcane harvesting: one semi-mechanical, and two mechanical ones - self-performed and outsourced, during three working shifts. As quality indicators, both mineral and vegetal impurities were accounted. About 50 random samples were collected in the studied area during 35 harvest days and in three working shifts, for each harvesting method. Mineral impurities showed similar behavior for both self-performed and outsourced mechanical harvesting, thus displaying a low variability. On the other hand, vegetal impurities showed to be unstable for all three shifts....

ANAEROBIC DIGESTION STABILITY TEST BY SHEWHART CONTROL CHART REA
Alcantara,Michael S.; Grisotti,Geovane; Tavares,Maria H. F.; Gomes,Simone D..
ABSTRACT The anaerobic digestion (AD) operation complexity raise the importance of stability testing to verify whether the operating conditions are under control and whether the process is working as required. The current method of verifying process stability is by a range of the ratio between volatile fatty acidity and total alkalinity (VFA/ TA) within which stable conditions are brought about; these rates vary with the content of organic material. A few indicators as pH or constant biogas production are also used. Therefore, the aim of this study was to propose the use of Shewhart control chart for individual measures as a stability test for AD, as well as to demonstrate its use in poultry litter AD. The method showed to be advantageous since it...

Detection of changes in time-series of indicators using CUSUM control charts ArchiMer
Mesnil, Benoit; Petitgas, Pierre.
Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods are extensively used in manufacturing contexts to monitor production processes. This article illustrates their potential utility for monitoring the state of marine ecosystems, using survey indicators. We exemplify the use of one SPC tool, the cumulative sum (CUSUM) control chart, to detect persistent changes in the state of a system as new observations are collected, using simulated and real data. Practical guidelines are given on how the chart parameters can be tuned to achieve an acceptable compromise between the ability to detect anomalies quickly and keeping the risk of false alarms low. The common performance measures associated with control charts depend on some key assumptions being met, and the potential...

Total Quality Management Techniques Explored at Carolina Cream and Scott Specialty Foods: A Case Study AgEcon
Crank, David A..
This case study examines the implementation of Total Quality Management (TOM) in two food processing firms. The two firms, which are separate divisions of a large food processor, used different implementation strategies, management leadership and employee empowerment. These strategies are compared on a strengths-and-weaknesses basis. The analysis shows that the context in which TQM is implemented is an important factor when planning such a dramatic strategic change and that the implementation of TQM or any other managerial innovation requires building teamwork and devotion of significant resources by all stakeholders in a company.

Can combine headers and travel speeds affect the quality of soybean harvesting operations? AGRIAMBI
Menezes,Patricia C. de; Silva,Rouverson P. da; Carneiro,Franciele M.; Girio,Lucas A. da S.; Oliveira,Mailson F. de; Voltarelli,Murilo A..
ABSTRACT Assuring the quality of mechanical soybean harvesting is crucial to ensure that investment in other stages of crop production is converted into profit for the farmer. Because the quality of this operation is related to decreased losses, which may be affected by the combine header used and by the harvesting speed, the aim of the present study was to assess the quality of mechanical soybean harvesting in the Southern Cone of Rondônia, using harvesters with different combine headers and travel speeds via statistical process control. The experiment was performed during the 2015/16 harvest in an agricultural area of the municipality of Cabixi, RO, located at the geographical coordinates 13° 27’ S and 60° 41’ W. The study was designed based on the...

Quality of mechanical peanut sowing and digging using autopilot AGRIAMBI
Zerbato,Cristiano; Furlani,Carlos E. A.; Oliveira,Mailson F. de; Voltarelli,Murilo A.; Tavares,Tiago de O.; Carneiro,Franciele M..
ABSTRACT Over the past decade, automatic guidance of agricultural machinery via Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals has been increasingly adopted by the farming community. Peanut farmers are adopting such technology in order to improve the parallelism of operations to address difficulties that occur in mechanical digging, where losses are a big problem. This study aimed to evaluate mechanized operations of peanut sowing and digging controlled manually and by autopilot, along with their quality. The treatments consisted of two digging operations, with and without autopilot, and two displacement speeds (4.5 and 6.0 km h-1). The experiment was conducted in a medium-textured soil in a completely randomized design arranged in bands, using the...

Mechanized fertilization: individual application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in sugarcane Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Carneiro,Franciele Morlin; Furlani,Carlos Eduardo Angeli; Ormond,Antonio Tassio Santana; Kazama,Elizabeth Haruna; Silva,Rouverson Pereira da.
ABSTRACT With the expansion of areas of sugarcane cultivation, mechanised fertilisation is essential for providing improved operational performance, optimising the supply of nutrients and increasing productivity. However, this type of fertilisation may present deficiencies in the area of distribution, such as fluidity, separation, and particle size, among others. A new concept in fertilisation is therefore being developed, capable of carrying out the individual application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, distributing these in various doses, with greater efficiency of application, employing precision farming and variable rates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the individual mechanised fertilisation of NPK in ratoon cane by means...

Capacity of the mechanical harvesting process of sugar cane billets Scientia Agricola
Peloia,Paulo Rodrigues; Milan,Marcos; Romanelli,Thiago Libório.
The mechanized harvest of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) in Brazil is an irreversible trend and it comes with a great concern about the quality of the cane delivered to the industry. A key component to quality is the billet length which affects the processing of raw material, cane deterioration, invisible losses and load density of transport vehicles. Thus, due to the importance of the billet standard in quality and cost of raw material, this study aimed to evaluate if the mechanized harvesting of sugar cane can supply the quality requirements for the crushing process, regarding the billet length. A plot with burnt sugar cane (3.2 ha) and another one with green sugar cane (8.0 ha) were selected to be harvested by two (2) self-propelled sugar cane...

Quality of cut and basecutter blade configuration for the mechanized harvest of green sugarcane Scientia Agricola
Toledo,Anderson de; Silva,Rouverson Pereira da; Furlani,Carlos Eduardo Angeli.
Quality control is used to evaluate processes and products, and is a powerful tool for reducing variability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of green sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) cutting for mechanized harvest, using statistical quality control tools. Cutting height and damage to ratoon stalks caused by different blade and disc combinations of the basecutter mechanism were used as indicators of quality. Cutting height showed high variability with a controlled process for some treatments. However, these treatments were incapable of producing satisfactory results. The damage index was lower in treatments that used tilted blades, but above the target for all treatments, which caused significant damage to the ratoons. In general, the...
