Subsurface fine scale patterns in an anticyclonic eddy off Cap-Vert peninsula observed from glider measurements ArchiMer

Glider measurements acquired along 4 transects between Cap‐Vert Peninsula and the Cape Verde archipelago in the eastern tropical North Atlantic during March‐April 2014 were used to investigate fine‐scale stirring in an anticyclonic eddy. The anticyclone was formed near 12°N off the continental shelf and propagated north‐west towards the Cape Verde islands. At depth, between 100‐400 m, the isolated anticyclone core contained relatively oxygenated, low salinity South Atlantic Central Water, while the surrounding water masses were saltier and poorly oxygenated. The dynamical and thermohaline subsurface environment favored the generation of fine‐scale horizontal and vertical temperature and salinity structures in and around the core of the anticyclone. These...

Biomass accumulation-influencing factors in microalgae farms AGRIAMBI
Pedruzi,Gerson O. L.; Amorim,Matheus L.; Santos,Raquel R.; Martins,Márcio A.; Vaz,Marcelo G. M. V..
ABSTRACT Due to the emergence of large microalgae farms and increased competition in this sector, the search for higher productivity is common. One way to achieve this goal in microalgae production is to optimize the factors that influence their growth during the cultivation stage to increase the accumulation of bio-compounds of interest. In this stage, the factors that most influence are: nutrition, gas diffusion, light intensity and quality and, finally, stirring, which directly affects all other factors. Thus, a review and an evaluation of the influence and importance of stirring were performed in the present study. The nutrients that most influence biomass accumulation are carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, but their proportion is directly related to the...

Particle size distribution by Bouyoucos in slightly alkaline soils from department of Cordoba, Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Combatt-Caballero,Enrique Miguel; Palencia-L,Manuel; Borja-M.,Katerine.
Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the Bouyoucos method, at different stirring times and using two chemical dispersants, for particle size determination and distribution in slightly alkaline soils of Córdoba, Colombia. Eight soils were mechanically dispersed applying a slow stirring; 60 rpm with five stirring times as follows: 2, 4, 6, 10 and 16 hours and a control experiment at 0 h. Chemical dispersion of samples was performed using two dispersants: Calgon (0.058 molL-1 (NaPO3)6 + 0.075 molL-1 Na2CO3) and a mixture of Calgon and 0.1 molL-1 Na4P2O7 at pH 9.1, which was proposed by authors. In addition, particle size distribution was determined by Pipette method, which was used as reference method. Tests of means and regression models were...
