| This paper explores the role of management ability in explaining efficiency on New York dairy farms. Using an unbalanced panel of farm data from 1993 through 2004, we estimate input and output-oriented technical efficiencies, cost efficiencies and revenue efficiencies using stochastic frontier functions. We include various input variables as efficiency effects and find lagged net farm income is a preferred measure of management ability over farmers' own estimates of the value of their labor and management. We also find increasing efficiency with operator education, farm size, and extended participation in a farm management program and decreasing efficiency with operator age. |

| The impact of group affiliation to agroholdings on enterprise performance in terms of productivity and efficiency is controversially discussed in the literature. However, only few papers evaluate the effects of group membership on the productivity and the efficiency of agricultural enterprises in Russia. The underlying research question of this paper is therefore whether farms that belong to agroholdings perform better than independent farms. We calculate partial land and labor productivity, total factor productivity and technical efficiency scores for the two categories of independent farms and members of agroholdings. | There is a continuously growing literature on the agricultural transformation in Central and Eastern European countries (see some surveys in Brooks and Nash 2002; Rozelle and Swinnen 2004). The research has focused on various aspects of transition, including land reform, farm restructuring, price and trade liberalisation, but even though Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data are now available for some years, there are only a few studies (e.g. Bakucs et al. 2010, Fogarasi and Latruffe, 2007, Baráth et al., 2009) focusing on Hungarian farm performance.
