Proximate composition, microbiological and sensory evaluation of canned skipjack tuna ( Katsuwonus pelamis ) stored at ambient and accelerated tempratures. OceanDocs
Akande, G.R.; Emokpae, A.O.; Towuru, E.T.; Ogbonna, C.; Ajayi, A..
The yield of skipjack tuna (Katsuwunus pelamis) was investigated. It was found that 2,75kg of fresh tuna are required for the production of every 1kg of canned tuna. Pre-cooking of tuna which is a major processing stage in tuna canning resulted in a loss of about 19% of its weight based on gutted and headed fish. Changes in the quality of canned tuna packed in brine, oil and tomato sauce at ambient and accelerated temperatures were examined by microbiological and sensory evaluation methods. Canned tuna samples were found to be microbiologically stable and organoleptically acceptable after one year storage period. Total viable counts (TVC) were generally low. Thermophilic organisms, anaerobes (clostridium) and coliforms (E. Coli type 1) were absent in...

Procedures for evaluating the tolerance of cassava genotypes to postharvest physiological deterioration PAB
Venturini,Marcela Tonini; Santos,Vanderlei da Silva; Oliveira,Eder Jorge de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to define procedures to assess the tolerance of cassava genotypes to postharvest physiological deterioration (PPD) and to microbial deterioration (MD). Roots of six cassava genotypes were evaluated in two experiments, during storage under different environmental conditions: high temperature and low soil moisture; or low temperature and high soil moisture. Roots were treated or not with fungicide (carbendazim) before storage. Genotype reactions to MD and PPD were evaluated at 0, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 days after harvest (DAH), in the proximal, medial, and distal parts of the roots. A diagrammatic scale was proposed to evaluate nonperipheral symptoms of PPD. Fungicide treatment and root position did not influence...

Germination test (sand test) of storage condition of treated field corn seed, SW. 5 variety was carried out in 2 conditions, room temperature (25 deg C +- 2 deg C) and control room (13 deg C +- 2 deg C, 45 percent RH.) storage for 6 months. There were 8 treatments including 7S+SPt 360, 7S+ KPS 46, 7S+SW 01/4, SW 01/4+SPt 360, SW 01/4+KPS 46, SPt 360+KPS 46, bacterial suspension KPS 46 and non-treated (control). The result showed that seed storage under different condition affected on seed germination significantly. Seed deterioration rate in condition room lower than in room temperature. For seed treatment, it was found that there were high correlation between seed storage and treated material. Under control room temperature, field corn seed treated with...

Postharvest conservation of the tuberous roots of Pachyrhizus Ahipa (Wedd) Parodi Anais da ABC (AABC)
MUSSURY,ROSILDA M.; SCALON,SILVANA P.Q.; SILVA,MAGAIVER A.; SILVA,TATIANE F.; GOMES,HELLEN; GASSI,ROSIMEIRE.
This paper aimed to evaluate the effects of storage periods on the conservation of Pachyrhizus ahipa roots at different temperatures and packaging materials. The roots were harvested, washed, packed in PVC, plastic bags, without wrappings (control) and stored in polystyrene trays in refrigerators, or cold chambers, or at room temperature. Total titratable acidity (TTA), total soluble solids (TSS), pH, as well as their ash, lipid, total carbohydrate and protein (dry basis) contents were analyzed. The lowest loss of root fresh weight was observed in the cold chamber and plastic bags. The TTA remained higher among roots stored in the cold chamber and in PVC packaging. The lowest TSS contents were observed for roots stored in the cold chamber, and these did...

Comparison of preservation methods of Atta spp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) for RAPD analysis Anais da SEB
Carvalho,Alfredo O. R.; Vieira,Luiz G. E..
High quality DNA for molecular studies can be easily extracted from fresh specimens. However, live samples are difficult to keep for long periods thus making their preservation a serious problem, specially when they are collected and transported from remote locations. In order to establish an efficient method to preserve Atta spp. (leaf-cutting ants) for RAPD analysis, six different storage methods were examined: 1) -70°C; 2) 95% ethanol at -20°C; 3) 95% ethanol at 4°C; 4) 95% ethanol at room temperature; 5) silica gel at room temperature; and 6) buffer (0.25 M EDTA, 2.5% SDS, 0.5 M Tris-HCl, pH 9.2) at room temperature. DNA was extracted (Cheung et al., 1993 - modified) and examined after 90, 210 and 360 days of storage. Freshly killed specimens were used...
