High-resolution satellite images of ocean color and sea surface temperature reveal an abundance of ocean fronts, vortices and filaments at scales below 10 km but measurements of ocean surface dynamics at these scales are rare. There is increasing recognition of the role played by small scale ocean processes in ocean-atmosphere coupling, upper-ocean mixing and ocean vertical transports, with advanced numerical models and in situ observations highlighting fundamental changes in dynamics when scales reach 1 km. Numerous scientific publications highlight the global impact of small oceanic scales on marine ecosystems, operational forecasts and long-term climate projections through strong ageostrophic circulations, large vertical ocean velocities and mixed layer...

Spatial and Seasonal Distributions of Frontal Activity over the French Continental Shelf in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Yelekci, Ozge; Charria, Guillaume; Capet, Xavier; Reverdin, Gilles; Sudre, Joel; Yahia, Hussein.
The frontal activity in coastal regions remains a research field where a large number of open questions needs to be addressed to quantify the potential impact of these processes on dependent systems (e.g. biogeochemical activity). Spatial and seasonal distributions of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) fronts (∼1-100 km) in the vicinity of main French rivers, Gironde and Loire, are explored over the continental shelf North of 45 °N in the Bay of Biscay. A high resolution (1 km spatial and daily temporal resolutions) dataset of 11 years' (2003 to 2013) remotely sensed SST by MODIS sensor onboard Aqua and Terra satellites has been investigated and compared with coastal numerical model experiments. The detection and characterization fronts with fluctuating...

Subsurface fine scale patterns in an anticyclonic eddy off Cap-Vert peninsula observed from glider measurements ArchiMer
Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Testor, Pierre; Lazar, Alban; Echevin, Vincent; Krahmann, Gerd; Chaigneau, Alexis; Gourcuff, Claire; Wade, Malick; Faye, Saliou; Estrade, Philippe; Capet, Xavier; Mortier, Laurent; Brehmer, Patrice; Schuette, Florian; Karstensen, Johannes.
Glider measurements acquired along 4 transects between Cap‐Vert Peninsula and the Cape Verde archipelago in the eastern tropical North Atlantic during March‐April 2014 were used to investigate fine‐scale stirring in an anticyclonic eddy. The anticyclone was formed near 12°N off the continental shelf and propagated north‐west towards the Cape Verde islands. At depth, between 100‐400 m, the isolated anticyclone core contained relatively oxygenated, low salinity South Atlantic Central Water, while the surrounding water masses were saltier and poorly oxygenated. The dynamical and thermohaline subsurface environment favored the generation of fine‐scale horizontal and vertical temperature and salinity structures in and around the core of the anticyclone. These...

Generation of submesoscale frontal eddies in the Agulhas Current ArchiMer
Tedesco, Pauline; Gula, Jonathan; Ménesguen, Claire; Penven, Pierrick; Krug, M..
This study addresses the dynamics of the Agulhas inshore front in the submesoscale range upstream of 26°E. Submesoscale frontal eddies are observed in the vicinity of Port Elizabeth (26°E) from satellite images and in observations collected from under‐water gliders. Using a submesoscale‐resolving numerical model (dx ~ 0.75 km) we are able to simulate similar submesoscale eddies. Barotropic instability is confirmed as the generation mechanism by a 1D linear stability analysis and an eddy kinetic energy budget. Kinetic energy is transferred from the mean flow to the eddies through the mean horizontal shear, which is a signature of barotropic instability. When the Agulhas Current is in a non‐meandering state, submesoscale eddy generation is a recurrent...

Intrathermocline Eddies Embedded within an Anticyclonic Vortex Ring ArchiMer
Meunier, Thomas; Tenreiro, M.; Pallas-sanz, Enric; Ochoa, Jose; Ruiz-angulo, Angel; Portela, Esther; Cusi, Simo; Damien, Pierre; Carton, Xavier.
High‐resolution hydrographic measurements reveal the presence of three Intra‐Thermocline Eddies (ITEs) embedded within a Loop Current Eddy (LCE). ITEs are lenticular bodies of nearly homogeneous water which contrasts with the well stratified surrounding water. Their radii and thickness ranged between [19‐32] km and [150‐250] m. Negative relative vorticity within their cores (down to ‐0.85 times the Coriolis frequency), along with a large negative stratification anomaly, result in low Ertel Potential Vorticity (PV) and intense negative Ertel Potential Vorticity Anomalies (PVA). Vortex stretching and relative vorticity have comparable contributions to PVA, resulting in Burger numbers of order unity. The similarity of thermohaline properties within the ITE's...

A review of the LATEX project: mesoscale to submesoscale processes in a coastal environment ArchiMer
Petrenko, Anne A.; Doglioli, Andrea M.; Nencioli, Francesco; Kersale, Marion; Hu, Ziyuan; D'Ovidio, Francesco.
The main objective of the LAgrangian Transport EXperiment (LATEX) project was to study the influence of coastal mesoscale and submesoscale physical processes on circulation dynamics, cross-shelf exchanges, and biogeochemistry in the western continental shelf of the Gulf of Lion, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. LATEX was a five-year multidisciplinary project based on the combined analysis of numerical model simulations and multi-platform field experiments. The model component included a ten year realistic 3D numerical simulation, with a 1 km hor-izontal resolution over the gulf, nested in a coarser 3 km resolution model. The in situ component involved four cruises, including a large-scale multidisciplinary campaign with two research vessels in 2010. This...

Study of the stability of a large realistic cyclonic eddy ArchiMer
De Marez, Charly; Meunier, Thomas; Morvan, Mathieu; L’hégaret, Pierre; Carton, Xavier.
We investigate the stability of a composite cyclone representative of Arabian Sea eddies using a high resolution primitive equation model. We observe that the eddy is unstable with respect to a mixed barotropic/baroclinic instability, leading to the growth of an azimuthal mode 2 perturbation. The latter deforms the eddy, which eventually evolves into a tripole after about 4 months of simulation. The presence of a critical level for the most unstable mode generates sharp fronts in the surface mixed layer where the Rossby number is large. These fronts then become unstable, and this generates submesoscale cyclones and filaments. Near these fronts, diapycnal mixing occurs, causing the potential vorticity to change sign locally, and symmetric instability to...

Resolving and Parameterising the Ocean Mesoscale in Earth System Models ArchiMer
Hewitt, Helene T.; Roberts, Malcolm; Mathiot, Pierre; Biastoch, Arne; Blockley, Ed; Chassignet, Eric P.; Fox-kemper, Baylor; Hyder, Pat; Marshall, David P.; Popova, Ekaterina; Treguier, Anne-marie; Zanna, Laure; Yool, Andrew; Yu, Yongqiang; Beadling, Rebecca; Bell, Mike; Kuhlbrodt, Till; Arsouze, Thomas; Bellucci, Alessio; Castruccio, Fred; Gan, Bolan; Putrasahan, Dian; Roberts, Christopher D.; Van Roekel, Luke; Zhang, Qiuying.
Purpose of Review Assessment of the impact of ocean resolution in Earth System models on the mean state, variability, and future projections and discussion of prospects for improved parameterisations to represent the ocean mesoscale. Recent Findings The majority of centres participating in CMIP6 employ ocean components with resolutions of about 1 degree in their full Earth System models (eddy-parameterising models). In contrast, there are also models submitted to CMIP6 (both DECK and HighResMIP) that employ ocean components of approximately 1/4 degree and 1/10 degree (eddy-present and eddy-rich models). Evidence to date suggests that whether the ocean mesoscale is explicitly represented or parameterised affects not only the mean state of the ocean but also...
