Symbiotic propagation of seedlings of Cyrtopodium glutiniferum Raddi (Orchidaceae) Acta Botanica
Guimarães,Fernanda Aparecida Rodrigues; Pereira,Marlon Corrêa; Felício,Cristiane da Silva; Torres,Denise Pereira; Oliveira,Sabrina Feliciano; Veloso,Tomás Gomes Reis; Kasuya,Maria Catarina Megumi.
In nature, orchid seeds obtain the nutrients necessary for germination by degrading intracellular fungal structures formed after colonization of the embryo by mycorrhizal fungi. Protocols for asymbiotic germination of orchid seeds typically use media with high concentrations of soluble carbohydrate and minerals. However, when reintroduced into the field, seedlings obtained via asymbiotic germination have lower survival rates than do seedlings obtained via symbiotic germination. Tree fern fiber, the ideal substrate for orchid seedling acclimatization, is increasingly scarce. Here, we evaluated seed germination and protocorm development of Cyrtopodium glutiniferum Raddi cultivated in asymbiotic media (Knudson C and Murashige & Skoog) and in oatmeal...

Zaghi Junior, Lienine Luiz; UNIPAR; Linde, Giani Andrea; UNIPAR; Colauto, Nelson Barros; Unipar.
Cultivation techniques for Agaricus brasiliensis (composting method) and substratum formulations are the same ones used for Agaricus bisporus. Most of the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratios reported for A. brasiliensis are similar to those used for A. bisporus on the composting method and there are few studies about the variation of C:N ratios for A. brasilienses on the axenic method. The objective of this study was to verify the mycelial growth of A. brasiliensis on different C:N ratios using regional by-products as substrate formulation on the axenic method. Studied C:N ratios of substrate (mixture of soybean and cassava fibers) ranged from 11:1 to 248:1, with nitrogen content ranging from 4.25 to 0.20%, respectively. It was concluded that substrate with...

PRINCIPE,ROMINA E.; MÁRQUEZ,JAVIER A.; CIBILS-MARTINA,LUCIANA.
Abstract: The assessment of biotic-habitat relationships provides key information to predict biotic responses to perturbations and important tools for river management and monitoring. This study aimed to assess the spatial distribution of Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera in mountain streams of central Argentina. We evaluated the effect of seasonality and identified the variables conditioning the abundance of the assemblages and the habitat with the highest taxonomic richness. Sampling was carried out in four streams (Carcarañá River basin) during high and low water periods. Three lotic habitats were sampled: riffles, coarse substrate runs, and fine substrate runs; and physicochemical and habitat variables were measured. We found differences in assemblage...

Evaluation of the community structure of marine sponges in reef patches of the southern Caribbean, Costa Rica Boletín de Investigaciones
Araya-Vargas,Alexander; Busutil,Linnet; García-Rojas,Andrea; Pereira-Chaves,José Miguel; Piedra-Castro,Liliana.
ABSTRACT Marine sponges fulfill many critical functions to coral reefs. In turn, variations in the community structure of the poriferans may indicate changes in the environmental conditions of the ecosystems where they live. However, their study has been scarce in the Caribbean of Costa Rica, mainly in the ecological field. Therefore, the community structure of these organisms was evaluated in four reef patches (Perezoso, Pequeño, Coral Garden, and the 0.36) and it was determined whether it could be explained by sedimentation, substrate, and depth. Relative abundance (RA) and relative coverage (RC) for each species, sponge density, and diversity indices (species richness, Shannon heterogeneity, Pielou's evenness, and Simpson's dominance) were calculated...

Production of extracellular proteases by Mucor circinelloides using D-glucose as carbon source / substrate BJM
Andrade,Vânia Sousa; Sarubbo,Leonie Asfora; Fukushima,Kasutaka; Miyaji,Makoto; Nishimura,Kazuko; Campos-Takaki,Galba Maria de.
Recently, some Mucorales species have been reported as protease producers. The production of extracellular proteases by Mucor circinelloides using glucose as substrate was studied. Experiments were carried out with different D-glucose concentrations (40, 60 and 80 g/L). Biomass, pH and protease activity were determined. Although biomass production had reached best yields for the medium containing D-glucose in a concentration of 80 g/L, the enzymatic production was higher when the substrate concentration was reduced to 40 g/L. The yield factor for product on cell growth and the yield factor for product on carbon substrate were higher when the microorganism grew in medium containing 40 g/L glucose. The kinetics parameters suggest that this strain seems to be...

Factors affecting "in vitro" plant development and root colonization of sweet potato by Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerd BJM
Bressan,Wellington.
Nutrients media (Murashige & Skoog, Hoagland & Arnon and White's media) supplemented or not with sucrose and substrates (vermiculite, agar and natrosol) were tested for their effects on plant development and root colonization of micropropagated sweet potato, cv. White Star, by Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerdemann (isolate INVAM FL S329). Addition of sucrose (3%) did not affect plant development. However, hyphal growth and root colonization were depressed. Contrasting responses to media nutrient concentration were observed for plant height, root colonization, and hyphal growth. The highest concentration of nutrients in Murashige & Skoog medium improved plant development, but this medium decreased hypha growth and inhibited...

Long-term cryopreservation of basidiomycetes BJM
Linde,Giani Andrea; Luciani,Alana; Lopes,Ana Daniela; Valle,Juliana Silveira do; Colauto,Nelson Barros.
Abstract Basidiomycetes have several biotechnological and industrial applications such as enzyme production, bioremediation, pharmaceutical and functional food production. Due to climatic features, the preservation of several basidiomycetes is threatened, and to guarantee the preservation of this genetic resource, the development of long-term preservation techniques is necessary once there is no universal protocol for the cryopreservation of basidiomycetes. Cryopreservation is a technique in which microorganisms are submitted to ultralow temperatures. Therefore, this study aimed to collect information on the main conditions for long-term cryopreservation of basidiomycetes in the last 20 years. Production of lettuce seedlings (Lactuca sativa) in granular rockwool and expanded perlite for use in hydroponics Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Tapia,Maria Luisa; Caro,José Marcelo.
The quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seedlings is closely dependent on the substrate and the management practice during the transplant to the hydroponic system. This seed bed process may affect the normal development of the seedlings by affecting the post-transplanting period, potentially causing root stress, influencing establishment and even leading to seedling loss. An important criterion when choosing either a single or mixed substrate is the ability to provide for both growth and establishment of the seedlings in the hydroponic system. The main objective of this study was to evalúate the effect of granulated rockwool substrate (Agrolan™, Compañía IndustrialEl Volcán S.A., Santiago, Chile), expanded perlite A6 (Harbolite Chile Ltda., Santiago,...
