The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) is an ecosystem engineer that provides important biogenic reef habitat with associated ecosystem functions and services. Most stocks have been commercially exploited and degraded; some are functionally extinct. Ecological restoration now aims to recover these degraded, damaged or destroyed ecosystems. Availability of seed oysters and substrate for successful larval recruitment has been identified as a major limiting factor for restoration projects in Europe. In substrate‐limited areas, restoration approaches have to involve the restoration of suitable substrates. The present study provides an evaluation of such potential substrate types. Various categories were investigated through hatchery and/or field experiments:... |

Numerous works are reported in literature concerning the biofilm growth on surfaces in seawater but the understanding of the adhesion mechanisms in the first steps of immersion is still subject to investigations. A knowledge of the chemical composition and of the kinetics of conditioning layer formation is a central requirement for a sound scientific understanding of biofilm growth. Due to its complexity and to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, this research asks for the collaboration between the fields of material science, surface analyses, chemistry, marine microbiology and biochemistry. The first steps of biofilm formation on 316L stainless steels immersed in natural sea water have been studied, using a broad range of surface characterisation... |

ABSTRACTBiodegradation techniques may help contaminated organic wastes to become useful for plant production. The current study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of composting in the biodegradation of toxic residues from the textile industry and its use as substrate in saplings production. Cotton cloths contaminated with oil and grease, used in loom maintenance, were composted in a mixture with cattle manure. The composted material replaced coconut fiber in the substrate for the production of eucalyptus rooted cuttings: mixture of vermiculite, carbonized rice husk and coconut fiber in the ratio of 2:1:1 (v/v) and using it as control. Thus, the amount of rice husks remained unchanged and the amount of vermiculite and compost varied. The compost proportion in... |

Stones are stable substrates in streams, usually sheltering high richness and abundance of invertebrates. To investigate the structure of the Chironomidae assemblages associated with stones in a first-order stream located in an Atlantic Forest reserve in two periods of the year, stones with diameters from 10 cm to 25 cm were collected along a stretch of 100 m in riffle areas, during three months in the dry season and three months in the rainy season. The structure of the community was analyzed for each period through calculation of observed richness, Shannon's diversity (H'), and Pielou's evenness. The ordination of the samples from the dry and rainy seasons was evaluated by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and the presence of indicator species in... |
