What Constitutes Success in Pacific Island Community Conserved Areas? Ecology and Society
Axford, Joanna C; School of Natural and Rural Systems Management, University of Queensland; jo.axford@gmail.com; Hockings, Marc T; School of Natural and Rural Systems Management, University of Queensland; hockings@uqg.uq.edu.au; Carter, R W. In recent years, few if any community conserved areas (CCAs) in the Pacific island region have been regarded as being successful. However, as success is rarely defined, what constitutes “success” is not clear. This paper reports an investigation into the way “outsiders” perceive success in Pacific island CCAs. An exploratory survey revealed six umbrella themes of success: the locus of control; local benefits; resource aspects; management; external stakeholder involvement; and sustainability. Multivariate analysis distinguished two groups, a Big picture group and a Locally focused group. These differ in how they define success, as well as their organizational alignment. The Big picture group, largely from funder...

Truths and governance for adaptive management Ecology and Society
Loftin, M. Kent; SynInt Inc.; CAMNet; kloftin@synint.com.
Managing large-scale water resources and ecosystem projects is a never ending job, and success should be measured in terms of achieving desired project performance and not just meeting prescriptive requirements of planning and constructing a project simply on time and within budget. Success is more than studying, planning, designing, or operating projects. It is developing the right plan, getting it implemented, and seeing that it is operated and performs properly. Success requires all of these, and failing any of these results in wasted resources and potential for doing great harm. Adaptive management can help make success possible by providing a means for solving the most complex problems, answering unanswered questions, and, in general, reducing...

In Pursuit of Knowledge: Addressing Barriers to Effective Conservation Evaluation Ecology and Society
Bottrill, Madeleine C; School of Biological Sciences, The University of Queensland; m.bottrill@uq.edu.au; Hockings, Marc; School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management, The University of Queensland; m.hockings@uq.edu.au; Possingham, Hugh P; School of Biological Sciences, The University of Queensland; h.possingham@uq.edu.au.
Evaluation, the process of assessing the effectiveness of programs and activities, has gained increasing attention in the conservation sector as programs seek to account for investments, measure their impacts, and adapt interventions to improve future outcomes. We conducted a country-wide evaluation of terrestrial-based conservation programs in Samoa. Though rarely applied, the benefit of evaluating multiple projects at once is that it highlights factors which are persistent and influential across the entire conservation sector. We found mixed success in achieving goals among conservation programs; yet this result is surrounded by uncertainty because of the quality of existing evidence on project outcomes. We explore the role of different components of...

Managing supply chains successfully: an empirical testing of success of supply chain networks in the German fish sector AgEcon
Gagalyuk, Taras; Hanf, Jon Henrich; Steinbauer, Christina.
Increasing consumer requirements for quality, safety and environmental sustainability of seafood products are recognized as the driving forces of vertical cooperation in the fish sector. Cooperation among the participants of the fish chain becomes apparent in formation of so-called supply chain networks that embody multilateral coordination and address more than just the goals of individual organizations. This requires that supply chain networks are successfully managed. Yet, it is not clear up to now what the success of supply chain networks is and how it can be measured. Therefore, this study aims to develop and test the model of the supply chain network success. We test the model empirically using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling based...

A főfoglalkozású egyéni gazdák habitusai Magyarországon AgEcon
Kovacs, Terez.

- The EU member states have nothing in common except that they all belong to the community. The reconciliation of diverse conditions, stages of development, traditions, values and interests takes place via compromise. Recently, however, new changes have appeared within the EU, which could fundamentally alter the agricultural sector and its interests and solutions....

The Impact of Participation in Cooperatives on the Success of Small Farms AgEcon
Mishra, Ashok K.; Tegegne, Fisseha; Sandretto, Carmen L..
This study identifies and analyzes factors that contribute to the success of small farms. Particular attention is given to the effect of participation in marketing and supply cooperatives on the success of small farms. Using modified net farm income per dollar of assets and operator’s labor and management income as measures of success, results show participation in marketing and supply cooperatives is positively correlated with success. Further, analysis findings indicate farm size, controlling for variable and fixed costs, type of ownership, management strategies used, working off the farm, and age of the operator are important factors that influence profitability (modified net farm income per dollar of assets and operator’s labor and management income)...

Chain Management: All about Success AgEcon
Gagalyuk, Taras; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
Nowadays food products are produced in vertically collaborating networks. The questions of how such chain networks have to be designed and which governance structure fits best have been addressed in several well known articles. However, questions dealing with chain strategy and management are not discussed satisfyingly. Neither is the understanding of what is success of chain management distinguished.
