Using Artificial Neural Networks for the Analysis of Social-Ecological Systems Ecology and Society
Frey, Ulrich J.; Center for Philosophy and the Foundations of Science, Justus Liebig University; ulifrey@yahoo.com; Rusch, Hannes; Center for Philosophy and the Foundations of Science, Justus Liebig University ; hannes.rusch@tum.de.
The literature on common pool resource (CPR) governance lists numerous factors that influence whether a given CPR system achieves ecological long-term sustainability. Up to now there is no comprehensive model to integrate these factors or to explain success within or across cases and sectors. Difficulties include the absence of large-N studies, the incomparability of single case studies, and the interdependence of factors. We propose (1) a synthesis of 24 success factors based on the current social-ecological systems (SES) framework and a literature review and (2) the application of neural networks on a database of CPR management case studies in an attempt to test the viability of this synthesis. This method allows us to obtain an implicit quantitative...

Evaluierung der Erfolgsfaktoren des EFQM-Modells in der österreichischen Ernährungswirtschaft anhand des Analytischen Hierarchieprozesses AgEcon
Meixner, Oliver; Pochtrager, Siegfried; Haas, Rainer.
Numerous companies in the Austrian food industry have already been certified in accordance with the ISO 9000 standards. However, the introduction of a quality management system in a company alone does not guarantee continuous improvement as required by the standard ÖNORM ISO 9001:2000. In order to be successful when introducing and maintaining a quality management system in a company, a number of important factors must be considered. These success factors are derived from the „European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Model for Business Excellence“. The purpose of the EFQM Model is to support the internal assessment of the quality management within a company, and it can be regarded as a motor for internal improvement. In particular, for companies...

Evaluating rural development policy - review of the CMEF AgEcon
Huelemeyer, Kerstin; Schiller, Simone.
With the Common Monitoring and Evaluation Framework (CMEF) a guidance document for evaluation of rural development policy has been published by the European Commission. The CMEF defines the requirements on monitoring and evaluation and specifies a limited number of quantitative common indicators applicable to each programme. While in general the introduction of the CMEF is considered as being a helpful tool for carrying out evaluation, substantial criticism has been expressed regarding the suggested methodological approach and the provided set of impact indicators. Based on qualitative analyses, this article focuses on contributing to a better understanding of the evaluation process in order to learn from stakeholder perceptions and draw conclusions on how...

Erfolgsfaktoren in landwirtschaftlichen Unternehmen AgEcon
Dautzenberg, Kirsti; Petersen, Volker.
Which factors impact on the success of agricultural enterprises? The objective of this paper is to identify some of the key factors in this regard. Linear structural equation models with latent variables are used to examine strategic management phenomena. The analysis is based on the results of annual financial statements of agricultural enterprises from southern Saxony-Anhalt for 1995/96 to 1999/00. The enterprises' success is measured by the gross margin in crop production. The identified success factors are from different functional areas of the corporate management. Four dimensions of corporate management have been analysed: market, production, technology, and production factor structure. The results indicate two main conclusions. Firstly, the...

Success Factors of Digital Markets in the Agricultural and Food Industry AgEcon
Clasen, Michael.
In this paper hypotheses concerning the success of digital market places for agricultural inputs and products are tested. The hypotheses were derived from transaction cost considerations. Success of digital market places was measured in two ways: (i) the probability for a digital marketplace to survive the competition from conventional and other digital market places and (ii) various metrics of market activity such as the number of hits received, number of incoming links, and page views per visitor session. Data were obtained from a survey of 233 digital market places that had been installed to serve the agricultural and food industries.
