Influence of structure on the mechanical behavior of an agricultural clay soil CIGR Journal
Robert Medjo Eko; ASABE; Claude Lague; University of Ottawa.
A better understanding of soil mechanical properties is needed to assess soil compaction in clay soil. To fill that need, a research program was undertaken at Laval University, Quebec city, Canada to ultimately find better solutions in managing Sainte Rosalie clay compacted by liquid manure spreaders. The soil used for the investigation was collected from a field where soil compaction was monitored. It was statically compacted in loose and dense states to reflect the soil conditions above and below the plow pan. Tests on both saturated and unsaturated samples of Sainte Rosalie clay were then carried out. They were conducted within an isotropic stress state framework to analyze the mechanical behavior of the soil.  Data gathered from the investigation show...

Critical Parameters on Pneumatic Handling of Paddy Seed by Vacuum Pressure CIGR Journal
Abdulkadir, Tukur Daiyabu.
ABSTRACTThis study was carried out to determine the critical operational parameters for pneumatic handling of MR219 paddy seeds, with emphasis to seeding of system of rice intensification (SRI) seedling tray. The relevant physical and aerodynamic properties of MR219 seeds were studied. Twenty nozzle designs were developed based on the physical properties. A suitable operational vacuum pressure for single paddy seed picking was determined from established models based on one thousand kernel mass M1000, true density, sphericity and projected area of MR219 paddy seed. The performances of the twenty nozzle designs were evaluated experimentally using an automated platform consisting of screw mechanism, vacuum manifold, solenoid valve, vacuum pump and Atmel...

Structure and function of the feeding apparatus in the common musk turtle Sternotherus odoratus (Chelonia, Kinosternidae) Naturalis
Natchev, N.; Heiss, E.; Singer, K.; Kummer, S.; Salaberger, D.; Weisgram, J..
The present study examined the kinematic patterns of initial food uptake, food transport, pharyngeal packing and swallowing in the common musk turtle Sternotherus odoratus. These data are supplemented by morphological descriptions of the skull and the hyolingual complex. Although the hyoid is mainly cartilaginous, S. odoratus still use exclusively hydrodynamic mechanisms in prey capture and prey transport. The tongue is relatively small, with weakly developed intrinsic musculature. We propose that the elasticity of the hypoglossum and the hyoid body impacts the capability of S. odoratus to suction feed, but allows these turtles to effectively re-position the food items within the oropharyngeal cavity during transport, manipulation and pharyngeal packing....
