Effects of sucrose and irradiance on germination and early gametophyte growth of the endangered tree fern Dicksonia sellowiana Hook (Dicksoniaceae) 39
Renner,Gladys Daniela Rogge; Randi,Áurea Maria.
It is an endangered tree fern that grows in mixed umbrophylus forests in the tropics. Sterilized spores were germinated at 25 ± 2ºC under a 16-hour photoperiod, in Dyer and MS medium supplemented with 0 to 5% sucrose. The germination was lower with the addition of sucrose. Dry mass was higher in 30-day-old gametophytes cultivated in Dyer medium with the addition of 3 to 5% of sucrose. The dry mass decreased in 30-day-old gametophytes cultivated in Dyer and MS media without sucrose and in MS medium with the addition of 4 or 5% of sucrose. The effect of different irradiance on the germination and early gametophyte development of D. sellowiana was analyzed in the autumn of 1998 (May until July). Conical flasks containing spores were kept over a period of 49...

Ligustrum lucidum ait. is an exotic species and In the present study, contents of sugars, proteins, and germination were evaluated in seeds removed from not abscisic and abscisic fruits. The seeds were stored or not  under shadow or sun. The higher contents of total and reducing sugars were observed in seeds removed from not abscisic fruit while the period of storage resulted in the loss of these compounds. The same result was observed in the content of total sugars of seeds from abscisic fruits. The content of reducing sugars in seeds from abscisic fruits and submitted to storage had its content increased. The contents of total proteins in seeds from abscisic and not abscisic submitted to shadow or sun were not significantly different, but the results...

Soluble amino acid profile, mineral nutrient and carbohydrate content of maize kernels harvested from plants submitted to ascorbic acid seed priming 42
ALCÂNTARA,BERENICE K.; RIZZI,VANESSA; GAZIOLA,SALETE A.; AZEVEDO,RICARDO A..
ABSTRACT Both the scientific community and society have shown interest in improving the content of amino acids, carbohydrates and mineral nutrients in maize because it represents an important staple food in many developing countries. Earlier studies demonstrated that the treatment of seeds using ascorbic acid (AsA-seed priming) enhanced soluble carbohydrates, proteins and soluble amino acids for other species. AsA seed priming in maize showed the potential for reducing abiotic stresses. The effects on grain quality have not been previously demonstrated. This study investigated the impacts of AsA seed priming on maize kernel quality of seeds produced by the plants generated from the primed seeds, based on the amino acid profile and carbohydrate and mineral...

Potential of sucrose and Pennisetum purpureum cv. Cameroon mulch on the management of Meloidogyne javanica and M. incognita 52
Santiago,Débora Cristina; Homechin,Martin; Montalvan,Ricardo; Krzyzanowski,Alaide Aparecida.
The effects of sucrose on motility and infectiveness of juveniles of Meloidogyne javanica were evaluated under laboratory and greenhouse conditions, using brown sugar and crystal sugar. Results showed that crystal and brown sugar solutions reduced motility and promoted morphological alterations of juvenile nematodes in vitro. The increasing dosages of sucrose reduced the number of galls and egg masses in tomato root by reducing the number of infective juveniles. The efficiency of granular sucrose, sucrose solution, with and without elephant-grass mulch, in the reduction of reproduction and final population of M. incognita race 2, were also evaluated. Granular sucrose induced decrease on the numbers of galls and eggs masses per root system as well as on...

Antifungal properties of clove oil (Eugenia caryophylata) in sugar solution 58
Núñez,Lidia; D'Aquino,Miguel; Chirife,Jorge.
The effect of temperature, concentration and contact time on the fungicidal effect of clove oleoresin dispersed in a concentrated sugar solution at 21 and 37ºC, and clove oleoresin at 0.2 to 0.8% (v/v) was studied. The test microorganisms were Candida albicans, Penicillium citrinum, Aspergillus niger and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The fungicidal effect was enhanced at 37ºC; at this temperature short contact times (e.g. 1 min.) were enough to eliminate a microbial inoculum of 10(6) c.f.u./ml of C. albicans. Although clove oleoresin caused important lethal effect, P. citrinum and A. niger were more resistant. After 60 minutes, clove oleoresin dispersed (0.4% v/v) in concentrated sugar solution caused a 99.6% reduction of the initial population (10(6)...

Sugar fractionation and pectin content during the ripening of guava cv. Pedro Sato 116
Abreu,José Renato de; Santos,Custódio Donizete dos; Abreu,Celeste Maria Patto de; Corrêa,Angelita Duarte; Lima,Luiz Carlos de Oliveira.
Guava is one of the most complete and balanced fruits in in terms of s nutritional value. Highly perishable, due to its intense metabolism during ripening, its shelf life can reach 3 to 5 days under room temperature. The firmness of the green and mature fruits is due mainly to the pectin polymers. The loss of firmness during the guava ripening is due to hydrolytic enzyme activity, which promotes intense solubilization of the cell wall pectins. Given the above, with the purpose of trying to explain the rapid firmness decrease, the centesimal composition and sugar fraction of the guava fruit were determined during ripening at room temperature. The guavas were picked at the half-mature stage and stored for 8 days at 22 ± 1 ºC and 78 ± 1% relative humidity....

The effects of water and sucrose contents on the physicochemical properties of non-directly expanded rice flour extrudates 116
Silva,Marcia Cristina da; Carvalho,Carlos Wanderlei Piler de; Andrade,Cristina Tristão.
Rice flour was processed by extrusion cooking in the presence of variable contents of water and sucrose. The process was carried out in a twin-screw extruder under the conditions given by a centre rotational experimental design of second order. The effects of the independent variables, water content (27.9 to 42.1%), and sucrose content (0.1 to 19.9%) on the physicochemical properties of the extrudates were investigated. The water absorption index (WAI), water solubility index (WSI), volumetric expansion index (VEI), and bulk density (BD) were determined as dependent variables. BD was determined for samples before and after frying. An increase in water contents resulted in higher WAI and VEI, and lower WSI and BD for extrudates before and after frying....

Sweeteners and sweet taste enhancers in the food industry 116
CARNIEL BELTRAMI,Monique; DÖRING,Thiago; DE DEA LINDNER,Juliano.
Abstract The search for new sweeteners technologies has increased substantially in the past decades as the number of diseases related to the excessive consumption of sugar became a public health concern. Low carbohydrates diets help to reduce ingested calories and to maintain a healthy weight. Most natural and synthetic high potency non-caloric sweeteners, known to date, show limitations in taste quality and are generally used in combination due to their complementary flavor characteristics and physicochemical properties in order to minimize undesirable features. The challenge of the food manufacturers is to develop low or calorie-free products without compromising the real taste of sugar expected by consumers. With the discovery of the genes coding for...

Costa,João Carlos Miguel; Espeschit,Isis de Freitas; Pieri,Fábio Alessandro; Benjamin,Laércio Anjos; Moreira,Maria Aparecida Scatamburlo.
Bacterial biofilms are involved in the aggravation and recurrence of clinical mastitis in dairy herds. Several factors such as pH, temperature, concentration of O2 and glucose can affect their induction and growth rates. In this study, biofilm production was demonstrated by 27 Escherichia coli strains isolated from bovine mastitis at different pH values depending on the availability of glucose, mimicking conditions found in mammary glands affected by the disease. Biofilm formation was analyzed by spectrophotometric analysis in microtiter plate with 16 different culture media and by scanning electron microscopy. Biofilm formation was greater in isolates cultured under conditions associated with low glucose availability (0.5% or 1.5%) and with either an...

Effects of Sugar Supply on Longevity and Progeny Production of an Aphid Parasitoid, Aphidius ervi (Hymeno-ptera: Aphidiidae) 19
林, 佐季; 仲島, 義貴.
We investigated effects of sugar solution on adult longevity, progeny production and progeny sex ratio of Aphidius ervi in the presence and absence of host aphids. When female parasitoids were provided with 50% glucose–fructose solution in 1 : 1 ratio, they lived approximately twice longer than those provided with distilled water, irrespective of host aphid provision. The same effect of sugar solution was also observed on progeny production. When the parasitoid was fed sugar solution, its lifetime progeny production approximately doubled in comparison to that provided with water, whereas daily progeny production did not differ. Total number of female progeny did not differ between adult female provided with water and sugar solution, but significantly...

ANÁLISE DA COMPETITIVIDADE DO AÇÚCAR BRASILEIRO NO MERCADO INTERNACIONAL, 1990 A 2004 31
Martins, Alexandra Pereira; Maciel, Marilia Fernandes; Rosado, Patricia Lopes; Lirio, Viviani Silva.

Sugar Market Liberalization: Modeling the EU Supply of "C" Sugar 31
Gohin, Alexandre; Bureau, Jean-Christophe.
The various assessments of the effects of a liberalization of world sugar markets are largely inconsistent. One cause seems to be the modeling of the EU supply response. We investigate three possible linkages between production quota sugar and the out-of-quota or "C" sugar supply: i/ the existence of fixed costs covered by the in-quota sugar; ii /the "overshooting" behavior as prevention against poor yields; iii/ the production of C sugar as "reference building" in view of expected reforms. Modeling these effects results in the introduction of an implicit cross-subsidy between in quota sugar and C sugar. The resulting specification is included in a detailed model of EU agricultural sector so as to account for intersectoral linkages. We simulate the effects...

Accounting for Product Substitution in the Analysis of Food Taxes Targeting Obesity 31
Miao, Zhen; Beghin, John C.; Jensen, Helen H..
We extend the existing literature on food taxes targeting obesity. First, we incorporate the implicit substitution between sugar and fat nutrients implied by a complete food demand system and by conditioning on how food taxes affect total calorie intake. Second, we propose a methodology that accounts for the ability of consumers to substitute leaner low-fat and low-sugar items for rich food items within the same food group. This substitution is integrated into a demand system in addition to substitution among food groups. Simulations of a tax on added sugars show that the impact of the tax on consumption patterns is understated and the effect on welfare loss overstated when abstracting from this substitution within food groups.
