Selection via simulated individual BLUP based on family genotypic effects in sugarcane PAB

The objective of this work was to propose a new selection strategy for the initial stages of sugarcane improvement, based on the methodology 'simulated individual BLUP (BLUPIS)', which promotes a dynamic allocation of individuals selected in each full-sib family, using BLUP as a base for both the genotypic effects of the referred families and plot effects. The method proposed applies to single full-sib families or those obtained from unbalanced or balanced diallel crosses, half-sib families and self-pollinated families. BLUPIS indicates the number of individuals to be selected within each family, the total number of clones to be advanced, and the number of families to contribute with selected individuals. Yield trials of sugarcane under diverse conditions are the important step of breeding procedure which can be identified the suitable variety for growing in each agro-ecological zone. The sugarcane varieties i.e. KKU99-01 and KKU99-02 were used to compare with UT94-2-483, UT95-2-156 and KK94-2-200 and 2 check varieties, K84-200 and K88-92. The trials were laid out in RCB, 4 replications, 1.20 x 0.50 m spacing and plot size 8.0x 4.8 m. Fertilizer (15-15-15) at the rate of 100 kg/rai was applied twice, basal application and about 4 months after planting. Northeast region is an important sugarcane production area of Thailand. Low yielding especially inratoon crop and only one year rationing ability make high cost of production. Therefore, it is very important to breed new cultivars which are very good ratooning ability. Promising sugarcane clones for this purpose, TP04-066 and TP04-080 are hybrid between clone 94-2-128 (84-2-646/U-Thong1) and H47-4991. Hybridization, selection and preliminary trial were carried on at Khon Kaen Field Crops Research Center from 2004-10. In plant cane, cane yield of TP04-066 and TP04-080 were the same as Khon Kaen 3. Objective of this study was conducted to determine the diversity and relationships among commercial sugarcane varieties in Thailand. The pedigree in each variety was traced back to the original ancestors. The coefficient of parentage was calculated from records of 70 varieties, and a dendrogram was drawn using the unweighted pair-group method using arithmetic averages (UPGMA) of clustering. Pedigree data showed that Thai commercial varieties were only bred from 26 exotic varieties. The analytical results indicated that many sugarcane varieties had higher close relationship with OCSB3 (37.3%) than UT1 (20.4%). S. officinarum was major genetic contributor (25.1%) whereas S. barberi, S. spontaneum, and S. sinense were 10.8, 5.9, and 2.4%, respectively. These...
