Results from remote sensing analysis, participatory mapping, socio-economic interviews, and hotspot information that were analyzed in a geographic information system (GIS) show how fire has changed the landscape through its use in land preparation for oil palm and timber plantations and in the development of transmigration settlements. These timber and oil palm plantations have greatly altered the livelihood options of the communities, and have created conflict between communities and companies over land-use allocation and tenure. In many cases, conflict over tenure has been the motive for forest and land fires during the annual dry season. The swath bathymetric data acquired during the "Sumatra Aftershocks" cruise from the Sunda trench in the Indian Ocean to the north of the Sumatra Island imaged several scars and deposits. In situ pore pressure measurements using the Ifremer piezometer and coring demonstrate that high excess pore pressure and sediment deformation was generated by a recent event in the scar of the slope failure zone identified by J.T. Henstock and co-authors. This excess pore pressure is localized in the upper sedimentary layers and is not related to an interplate subduction process. We present results from multibeam bathymetric data acquired during 2005 and 2006, in the region of maximum slip of the 26 Dec. 2004 earthquake (Mw 9.2). These data provide high-resolution images of seafloor morphology of the entire NW Sumatra forearc from the Sunda trench to the submarine volcanic arc just north of Sumatra. A slope gradient analysis of the combined dataset accurately highlights those portions of the seafloor shaped by active tectonic, depositional and/or erosional processes. The greatest slope gradients are located in the frontal 30 km of the forearc, at the toe of the accretionary wedge. The 2004 Aceh and 2005 Nias events are the two greatest earthquakes of the past 40 years with a total rupture of 1700 km long and a coseismic slip reaching up to 25 m. These two earthquakes have caused large stress perturbations which significantly altered seismic activity in the Sumatra-Andaman region. Using both detailed mapping of failure planes and various slip distributions, we calculate this stress change along the Sumatra-Andaman-Sagaing fault system from central Sumatra to southern Myanmar. The static Coulomb stress change Delta CFF and the observed seismic activity are in very good agreement with a Coulomb index similar to 20% greater than the one obtained for random events. Based on new multi-channel seismic data, swath bathymetry, and sediment echosounder data we present a model for the interaction between strike-slip faulting and forearc basin evolution off north-western Sumatra between 2 degrees N and 7 degrees N. We examined seismic sequences and sea floor morphology of the Simeulue- and Aceh forearc basins and the adjacent outer arc high. We found that strike-slip faulting has controlled the forearc basin evolution since the Late Miocene. The Mentawai Fault Zone extends up to the north of Simeulue Island and was most probably connected farther northwards to the Sumatran Fault Zone until the end of the Miocene. A revision of the genus Phyllagathis Blume is presented under a wider generic concept than used by earlier authors. A comprehensive synopsis of the genus is provided in the general part, where morphological characters and their variations are discussed. This paper will focus in particular on the species occurring in Burma, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia), and Sumatra. Here, the genus includes 10 species, most of which are endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, with only two species endemic to Thailand (P. siamensis and P. tuberosa), and two other also occurring outside the Malaysian political boundaries (P. rotundifolia and P. hispida). Part II of this paper will treat the species of Borneo and Natuna Island. |

The species of the genus Euagathis Szépligeti, 1900 (Braconidae: Bassinae (= Agathidinae)) from the Greater and Lesser Sunda Islands (including West Malaysia) are revised and keyed. The subfamily name Bassinae Nees, 1812, is used because it is senior to the commonly used subfamily name Agathidinae Nees, 1814. Twenty-two species are recognized, of which nine are new. The genus Holcotroticus Cameron, 1902, is synonymized with Euagathis Szepligeti, 1900, and Euagathis ruficollis (Cameron, 1902) is a new combination. A study of Gynochthodes from Sumatra is presented. Eight species can be recognized, i.e., G. coriacea, G. jackiana, G. lanuginosa, G. leparensis, G. rigida, G. sublanceolata, G. suratmanii, and G. umbellata. An identification key to the species is provided and detailed descriptions, synonymy, taxonomic notes, and an index to specimen collections of the taxa are given. Natural history notes, including distribution and ecology, vernacular names and uses are also included. |

When Lady Sophia Raffles published her biography of her late husband, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, in 1830, she included a catalogue of zoological specimens based on the collections brought back by Raffles from Java and Sumatra. However, the catalogue was included without indication of its authorship. In the case of the birds, it has been attributed to either Vigors alone or Vigors & Horsfield. For about a century names were credited to Vigors alone but this was changed to Vigors & Horsfield. Here reasons are given to revert to Vigors alone. Nine new names were introduced in the catalogue; four are in current use. |

An inventory of Gesneriaceae in Sumatra based on herbarium specimens and field trips resulted in 17 genera. The genus Cyrtandra was the most diverse genus, followed by Aeschynanthus. Here we enumerate the species of Aeschynanthus in Sumatra. Distribution and altitudinal notes on 17 species of Aeschynanthus were made and the late Mary Mendum of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh added four more species. The only endemic species of Aeschynanthus in Sumatra is A. chrysanthus; two other species, A. albidus and A. wallichii, are widely distributed in Sumatra and the rest of Malesia. |

The inland fishery in South Sumatra, Indonesia, is an important source of income, employment and protein to small-scale fishers. Some overall indicators, such as virtual disappearance of certain important species and continuous reduction in the size of harvested fish, indicate that the fishery is not being exploited on a sustainable basis. In this study, an evaluation of the status of the existing fish stock is undertaken, and an analytical model for identifying efficient levels of exploitation of the fishery is developed.
