Effects of some air-jet impingement parameters on the removal of sunflower seeds from the heads in linear movement CIGR Journal
Mirzabe, Amir Hossein; Chegini, Golam Reza; Massah, Jafar; Khazaei, Javad.
Due to success of air-jet application in food and agricultural sciences, a new method was invented based on the impingement jets in order to eliminate a number of problems present in mechanical methods of removing sunflower seeds from the head. When the sunflower head had linear velocity and the nozzle was fixed, the effects of the seeds’ location on the sunflower head, reservoir pressure, nozzle diameter, linear velocity of the sunflower head, and the distance between the nozzle outlet and the surface of the sunflower head on its removed area were examined. The regions removed by the impingement of the air-jet were photographed and the area of the removed regions was calculated based on the image processing technique. The results showed that the area of...

Energy analysis of three energy crops in Greece CIGR Journal
Gemtos, T. A.; Cavalaris, C.; Tagarakis, A.; Fountas, S..
To assess the potential of energy crops to provide a stock material for biofuel production three crops (rapeseed, sunflower and sweet sorghum) were studied in field experiments in Thessaly, Central Greece in 2007 and 2008.  The cropping activities were recorded.  Energy analysis was carried out to assess benefits from the crops.  Power requirements and energy consumption during field operations were measured directly using instrumented tractors.  Literature data was used for the energy sequestered to the inputs of the system (indirect energy).  Energy budgets were produced taking into account as output either the seed or including the stalks for the two oil seed crops.  The results showed that in all cases positive energy balances were achieved.  Analysis...

Effects of micronutrient mixture foliar spraying on sunflower yield under water deficit and its evaluation by AquaCrop model CIGR Journal
Mansour, Hani.
AquaCrop is a very famous model in the world for evaluating the crop water productivity. FAO has developed the AquaCrop model as a leading and powerful scientific tool for simulating the response of different field crops to managing quantitative and qualitative irrigation. The experiment was cultivated on the farm of National Research Centre of Research and Production at El-Nubaria district, El-Buhaira Governorate on summer season of  the year 2018 and 2019, treatments were 80, 60 and 40 % of water holding capacity (WHC), and Micronutrient  mixture 4 levels 0, 1, 2 and 3%. Results found that the simulated and observed values of seed yield were rather well in agreement for the water stress treatments. This means that differences in vegetative growth, yield...

The taxonomic status of Xyonysius major (Berg) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae), an occasional pest of sunflower in Brazil Anais da SEB
Schaefer,Carl W..
Specimens of a species of the orsilline genus Xyonysius have been collected on sunflower (Helianthus annuus) in Londrina, Paraná. The specimens appeared to be X. major (Berg), but this species has been synonymized with X. californicus (Stål). Here I show the two species should be considered distinct, at least until the concept "Xyonysius californicus" has been clarified. The sunflower lygaeid is X. major.

Parasitismo e predação em ovos de Euschistus heros (Fab.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) no Distrito Federal, Brasil Anais da SEB
Medeiros,Maria A.; Schimidt,Francisco V.G.; Loiácono,Marta S.; Carvalho,Vinícius F.; Borges,Miguel.
The mortality of Euschistus heros (F.) at the egg stage was studied at the field. The experiments were carried out in Planaltina - D.F., Brazil, in 1993 and 1994, on sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivated following the soybean (Glycine max) crop season. Egg masses found in the field were marked and checked daily for four days, and taken to the laboratory to check the total number of eggs, eggs that failed to hatch and those parasitized or destroyed by predators. The incidence of parasitism in eggs of E. heros was high in 1993 (65%) and in 1994 (80%). Five species of parasitoids were recovered: Telenomus podisi Ashmead, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston), Trissolcus teretis Johnson, Trissolcus urichi Crawford (Scelionidae) and Eupelmus sp. (Eupelmidae). T....

Detection of single copy sequences using BAC-FISH and C-PRINS techniques in sunflower chromosomes Biocell
Talia,Paola; Greizerstein,Eduardo J.; Hopp,H. Esteban; Paniego,Norma; Poggio,Lidia; Heinz,Ruth A..
Bacterial artificial chromosome - fluorescence in situ hybridization (BAC-FISH) and cycling-primed in situ labeling (C-PRINS) techniques were evaluated for integration of physical and genetic maps of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Single-site SSR markers were selected from three linkage groups of a high-density sunflower genetic map. This selection was based on previously identified QTL associated to S. sclerotiorum. These markers were used to select BACs contaning single copy sequences for BAC-FISH aplication. Blocking of highly dispersed repetitive sunflower sequences reduced unspecific hybridization, and allowed the detection of specific signals for BACs containing SSR markers HA4222 and HA2600, anchored to LG 16 and LG 10, respectively. Single-site...

Identification and characterization of filamentous fungi isolated from the sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) rhizosphere according to their capacity to hydrolyse inulin BJM
Souza-Motta,Cristina Maria de; Cavalcanti,Maria Auxiliadora de Queiroz; Fernandes,Maria José dos Santos; Lima,Débora Maria Massa; Nascimento,João Paulo; Laranjeira,Delson.
Filamentous fungi able to hydrolyse inulin have been isolated from the rhizosphere of plants whose roots contain this polysaccharide. This study reports results concerning the isolation and identification of filamentous fungi from the soil used for sunflower cultivation and from the sunflower rhizosphere cultivated in field and in greenhouse. Fungi were evaluated according to their capacity to hydrolyse inulin and the variation in the diversity of these fungi during the plant's life cycle was also accessed. Forty-nine species of filamentous fungi were isolated. Penicillium and Aspergillus were the genera that presented higher number of species, nine and seven, respectively. At the end of the sunflower life cycle, cultivated both in field and in the...

Allelopathic Activity of Crop Residue Incorporation Alone or Mixed Against Rice and its Associated Grass Weed Jungle Rice (Echinochloa colona [L.] Link) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Khaliq,Abdul; Matloob,Amar; Ata Cheema,Zahid; Farooq,Muhammad.
Weed suppression is one of the several benefits achieved by soil incorporation of crop residues and such suppression is believed to be allelopathic in nature. The allelopathic potential of different crop residues: viz. sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), brassica (Brassica campestris L.) was evaluated in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and jungle rice (Echinochloa colona [L.] Link). Chopped crop residues were soil-incorporated alone and mixed at 6 g kg-1 soil (12 t ha-1) and compared with a control without residues. Soil incorporation of residues substantially delayed germination of jungle rice. The time to start germination, time to 50% emergence, mean emergence time, emergence index, and final germination percentage were all...

Genetic mapping of EST-SSR, SSR and InDel to improve saturation of genomic regions in a previously developed sunflower map Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Talia,Paola; Nishinakamasu,Verónica; Hopp,Horacio Esteban; Heinz,Ruth Amelia; Paniego,Norma.
In order to saturate a sunflower genetic map and facilitate marker-assisted selection (MAS) breeding for stress response, it is necessary to enhance map saturation with molecular markers localized in linkage groups associated to genomic regions involved in these traits. This work describes the identification and characterization of 1,134 simple sequence repeat (SSR) containing expressed sequence tags (EST) from unigenes available databases. Twelve of these functional markers as well as 41 public SSR markers were successfully localized in linkage groups, thus contributing to the saturation of specific regions on a reference genetic-linkage-map derived from recombinant inbred lines (RIL) mapping population from the cross between PAC2 x RHA266 lines. The...

Rooting in Km selective media as efficient in vitro selection method for sunflower genetic transformation Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Radonic,Laura Mabel; Zimmermann,Julián Marcos; Zavallo,Diego; López,Nilda; López Bilbao,Marisa.
Despite of numerous publications in sunflower genetic transformation, there is no efficient or reproducible protocol with low number of escapes. The latter would indicate that the selection method is not effective. In this work we used Km as selective agent, Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA105 strain and a vector with the nptII gene under the nos promoter and uidA gene under 35S promoter. The response of agroinfected (A) and control (C) explants during the in vitro culture was studied and in both cases in presence or absence of Km in order to assign a differential morphologic response between transformed and non-transformed plants. The characteristics analyzed were: height, colour/aspect of the plantlets, in vitro rooting and in vitro bud-flower development....

Introduction of antifungal genes in sunflower via Agrobacterium Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Radonic,Laura Mabel; Zimmermann,Julián Marcos; Zavallo,Diego; López,Nilda; López Bilbao,Marisa.
There is evidence that overexpression of transgenes codifying antifungal proteins may confer protection to pathogen attack, and that this protection is increased due to the synergic effect of the expression of two or more genes. On the other hand it is well known that sunflower is a recalcitrant specie, highly difficult to be genetically transformed. In this context, the final aim of this project was to obtain sunflower plants expressing at least two antifungal genes, avoiding sequential transformation. The antifungal genes used encode for two enzymes that degrade the fungal wall (glucanase and chitinase), an osmotin and a ribosome inhibitor protein. Two types of transformation vectors were used: a more traditional system with a double cassette and a novel...

Impact of irrigation on yield and energy balance of the production of oil and cake of two sunflower varieties REA
Jordan,Rodrigo A.; Gomes,Eder P.; Biscaro,Guilherme A..
The energy balance for the production of sunflower oil and cake was carried out during the agricultural and industrial stage phase, where it was considered a cold extraction by hydraulic pressing, with the plant location in a rural area with a radius of 30km range. Data on productivity was used in two varieties of sunflower (Helio 358 and Aguará 04) grown in different seasons (2007/2008, 2008/2009), under different irrigation levels. Data showed that irrigation resulted in an increase in productivity of both varieties, and the best response was observed for Aguará 04 variety. Moreover, the increased intensity of irrigation negatively affected the energy balance, reducing the ratio between energy produced and energy used in the production chain. The most...

Variability among inbred lines and RFLP mapping of sunflower isozymes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Carrera,Alicia D.; Pizarro,G.; Poverene,M.; Feingold,S.; León,A.J.; Berry,S.T..
Eight isozyme systems were used in this study: acid phosphatase (ACP), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), esterase (EST), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), phosphoglucoisomerase (PGI), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD), and phosphoglucomutase (PGM). The polymorphism of these enzyme systems was studied in 25 elite inbred lines. A total of 19 loci were identified, but only eight of them were polymorphic in the germplasm tested. The polymorphic index for the eight informative markers ranged from 0.08 to 0.57, with a mean value of 0.36. Five isozyme loci were mapped in F2:3 populations with existing RFLP data. Est-1, Gdh-2 and Pgi-2 were mapped to linkage groups 3, 14 and 9, respectively. As in previous reports, an ACP locus and a PGD...
