Financial losses in pork supply chain: a study of the pre-slaughter handling impacts REA
REIS,JOÃO G. M. DOS; MACHADO,SIVANILZA T.; SANTOS,RODRIGO C.; NÄÄS,IRENILZA DE A.; OLIVEIRA,RONE V..
Brazil is amongst the world’s largest swine producers. However, its competitiveness has been vulnerable due to a lack of cooperation between the supply chain players. This condition makes the financial losses to be evaluated taking into account only an individual node, and most of the time, these damages are imputed by swine breeders. Living weight losses occur between the farm to slaughterhouses, and the main cause of these losses is the pre-slaughter handling, especially during animal transportation. In this research, we analyzed the pre-slaughter handling in a swine farm in Brasilândia, MS, Brazil. Analyzed data were provided by five slaughterhouses (farm clients) from the studied region, in which it was considered living weight losses, carcass...

Information Modelling for Quality and Sustainability AgEcon
Lehmann, Richard J.; Reiche, Robert; Fritz, Melanie; Schiefer, Gerhard.
The food sector is confronted with a growing number of public and private requirements, which call for provision of information about the quality and sustainability of food, such as, e.g., its origin, safety and production conditions. This forces enterprises to innovate towards demand driven and knowledge-based production of food. As a consequence, intra- and inter-enterprise production and information processes have to be integrated and suitable information systems need to be developed to provide information for related decision processes. The present paper introduces a generalized modelling framework for model-based decision support systems (DSS) involving production and information processes across whole supply networks. The different phases of a...

The Role of Public-Private Partnerships and Collective Action in Ensuring Smallholder Participation in High Value Fruit and Vegetable Supply Chains AgEcon
Narrod, Clare A.; Roy, Devesh; Okello, Julius Juma; Avendano, Belem; Rich, Karl M..
Many developing countries have moved into the production of non-traditional agricultural products to diversify their exports and increase foreign currency earnings. Accessing developed country markets and urban domestic markets requires meeting the food safety requirements due to several demand and supply side factors. Food retailers have developed protocols relating to pesticide residues, field and packinghouse operations, and traceability. In this changing scenario where food safety requirements are getting increasingly stringent, there are worries regarding the livelihood of the poor since companies that establish production centers in LDCs might exclude them. Poor producers face problems of how to produce safe food, be recognized as producing safe...

MANAGEMENT OF PERCEIVED RISKS IN E-BUSINESS FOR EFFICIENT FOOD SUPPLY NETWORK MANAGEMENT: THE CASE OF TRUST AgEcon
Fritz, Melanie; Canavari, Maurizio.
Vertical coordination in food networks is characterized by dynamically changing supply and marketing relationships. E-business provides support and improvement options for vertical coordination processes and flexible supply chain management in food networks. However, adoption of e-business in food networks is low as available e-business offers as the communication of safeguards for trust and control as basis for the transaction decision is not realized appropriately. This paper analyzes decision preferences for trust generation as basis for the design of e-business environments for supply chain management in food networks. The analytic hierarchy process is applied to prioritize preferences for different transaction scenarios in food networks.

The Agri-Food Cooperative Netchain: A Theoretical Framework to Study its Configuration AgEcon
Perez, Ana Maria Garcia; Martinez, Marian Garcia.
This paper proposes a research framework of the design and configuration of agrifood chains where the focal firm is a second-tier cooperative (group of affiliated cooperatives) in order to assess the alignment of (relational) governance structures and coordination mechanisms in these chains with supply chain management (SCM) principles. The theoretical framework proposes an integrative approach by drawing on the Relational View of inter-organisational competitive advantage and the Theory of Networks as inter-cooperative vertical relationships are embedded in horizontal ties between firms (first-tier cooperatives) of social rather economic nature. The conceptual framework developed herein will help theory building in SCM, but most importantly it would...

Problems and Countermeasures of Logistics in the Marine Fisheries Industry AgEcon
Jiang, Yi-min.
Based on the connotation of marine fisheries logistics, the thesis give a brief account of its features: firstly, it is more susceptible to natural conditions; secondly, the aquatic logistics is with strong specialized assets; thirdly, the aquatic products market has relative greater uncertainties; fourthly, it calls for higher logistics technology; fifthly, it is difficult to conduct supply chain management. Then the thesis analyzes the problems in the marine fisheries industry: the first problem is the imperfect standardization system of the aquatic logistics; the second is the backward development in the cold storage of the marine fisheries; the third is low information-based degree of marine fisheries logistics system; the fourth one is the low level...

Supply Chain Management in the Life Science Sector: Does Trust Play a Role? AgEcon
Hausen, Tobias; Fritz, Melanie.
Supply chain management has emerged as cross functional, cross company concept to improve coordination of entire value chains through coordinated actions of all companies in the value chain. It has received a major push from the availability of Internet-based information and communication technologies. The conditions in certain sectors are favorable for a realization of chain wide supply chain management. In other sectors, however, conditions are more complex and companies and value chains still struggle to exploit the potentials from supply chain management, in particular when it comes to cross enterprise coordination. This paper takes a complex supply network as example and discusses improvement potentials from supply chain management and developments in...

Effects of Supply Chain Management for Food and Grocery Companies AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J.; Martens, Bobby J.; Blomeke, Phillip.
Mass merchandisers’ entry into food retailing threatens traditional grocers’ market share. In response, traditional grocers and food manufacturers adopted Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) as an industry-wide set of supply chain management strategies that focused on cutting costs and improving product assortment, thereby improving inventory and financial performance levels. However, research findings and trade press reports question whether adopting supply chain management strategies will achieve these goals. The results of this analysis strongly support the proposition that the adoption of an ECR strategy pays off. However, the growth in profit does not appear to come from improved performance for traditional inventory measures. The driving force...

Enhancing the integration of agri-food supply chains: theoretical issues and practical challenges in the UK malting barley supply chain AgEcon
Leat, Philip M.K.; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar.
The purpose of this paper is to explore the issues that may affect the integration (i.e., the relationships) between the different actors that comprise a supply chain. Whist the theoretical part of the paper can be referred to any supply chain, the empirical part is focused on the UK barley to beer supply chain. The main motivation behind the topic is that improvements in the relationships amongst the different segments of a chain can enhance its efficiency and effectiveness, (e.g., through improvements in coordination and cooperation), and therefore, its competitiveness and long term sustainability. The paper is based on two complementary analyses: the first one consisted of a structural equation model (SEM) to determine those factors that affect the...

Organic Food and Farming: Between Market Subordination and Retailer Growth Prospects AgEcon
Kledal, Paul Rye.
The paper is based on research conducted for DARCOF II (Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming, www.darcof.dk). The aim of the research project is to analyze the future development of the Danish organic food sector through focusing on two agro-commodities: vegetables and pork. Emphasis is placed on identification of economic forces within the supply chains. The main conclusions of the paper - being the results from the organic vegetable chain are that the rules and regulations, and the development of alternative transaction processes in organic food and farming have so far been founded on social counter reactions to the mechanisms of a free market economy that result in the marginalization of farmers, animals welfare and the environment. However,...

The Joint Impact of Supply Chain Integration and Quality Management on the Performance of Pork Processing Firms in China AgEcon
Han, Jiqin; Omta, S.W.F. (Onno); Trienekens, Jacques H..
It is widely acknowledged that competition is no longer between individual firms, but between supply chains. A number of studies have indicated that supply chain integration and quality management have become essential to obtain competitive advantage. The present study tests the relationships among supply chain integration, quality management practices and firm performance in 229 Chinese pork slaughterhouses and processors using structural equation modeling. The most important results are that quality management is positively linked with firm performance. As managers put it "Quality is the life of the enterprise". Pork processing managers that wish to improve their performance are therefore advised to invest in quality management. Equally interesting is...

Investigating a Paradigm of Food System Sustainability:The Case of Fresh Vegetable Production and Distribution in Crete AgEcon
Apostolides, Kristy; Kambourakis, Emmanouil.
In opposition to the current paradigm of the globalized the food system, many regional initiatives have arisen to reorganize the food system into localized or regionalized supply chains. This study explores the existing food supply chain for field fruit and vegetable production within the island of Crete, Greece, by examining the production and distribution of food stuffs through the wholesale system and to determining the geographic and retail terminal points for these Cretan-produced items. Through case studies, this paper examines the typology of production and maps the distribution of vegetables and melons produced on the island as the first step to determining the current level of food system sustainability, and opportunities and barriers for greater...

Ten Conversations about Identity Preservation: Implications for Cooperatives AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Bender, Karen.
Motivation: While it appears the modern economy demands ever increasing amounts of differentiation, opportunities for grain producers to create and capture significant new sources of value remains elusive. Opportunities appear to loom large to help remove risk and improve quality in the grain supply chain through preservation of product identity, producers, producer groups, and cooperatives are frustrated at the low level of value available to them from IP demand. Why do premiums remain low? And, what is the role of group action in these new differentiated markets? Objectives: This research report helps to explain this apparent paradox underlying the economics of the value proposition for IP grains. Methodology: Needs assessments were conducted on...

Equilibrium pricing and ordering policies in a two-echelon supply chain in the presence of strategic customers Anais da ABC (AABC)
SADJADI,SEYED J.; NAEIJ,JAFAR; SHAVANDI,HASAN; MAKUI,AHMAD.
ABSTRACT This paper studying the impact of strategic customer behavior on decentralized supply chain gains and decisions, which includes a supplier, and a monopoly firm as a retailer who sells a single product over a finite two periods of selling season. We consider three types of customers: myopic, strategic and low-value customers. The problem is formulated as a bi-level game where at the second level (e.g. horizontal game), the retailer determines his/her equilibrium pricing strategy in a non-cooperative simultaneous general game with strategic customers who choose equilibrium purchasing strategy to maximize their expected surplus. At the first level (e.g. vertical game), the supplier competes with the retailer as leader and follower in the Stackelberg...
