A SUSTENTABILIDADE DA AGRICULTURA ORGÂNICA FAMILIAR DOS PRODUTORES ASSOCIADOS À APOI (ASSOCIAÇÃO DOS PRODUTORES ORGÂNICOS DA IBIAPABA-CE) AgEcon
Oliveira, Ana Ferreira Dos Santos; Khan, Ahmad Saeed; Lima, Patricia Veronica Pinheiro Sales; Silva, Lucia Maria Ramos.

Sustainable Farm Management Practices in the Enlarged EU: A Case Study of Integrated Ecofarm in the Central Hungary Region AgEcon
Voros, Mihaly; Gemma, Masahiko.
The integration to the EU markets has resulted in significant changes in production and market activities in Hungarian agriculture. Our case study found that efforts on product differentiation through quality improvement have been critical for staying competitive in the more liberalized market conditions. Diversification of farming and non-farming activities seems to be also important for farm management coping with production and price risks associated with agricultural production and marketing activities. Organic farming in Hungary is certainly one way of achieving success in competitive markets in the EU. Lack of appropriate policy tools and shortage of new institutions to support Hungarian farms, which are in search for survival in the EU markets,...

Using multi-agent modeling technique to regionalize key processes and patterns of sustainable agricultural cropping systems in the North China Plain AgEcon
Roth, Andreas; Pan, Ying; Yu, Zhenrong; Doluschitz, Reiner.
The North China Plain (NCP) covers an area of around 328,000 km2 and is one of the most important regions of cereal crop production in China. Wheat and maize rotations and one season cotton are the most common cropping systems. The region contributes at an amount of about 50% to the countries wheat production and about one third of maize yields. Crop production in the NCP was focused in the last decades on increasing yields to meet the growing food demand accompanied by the limitation of arable land as a result of urbanization rate i.e. of the Beijing District. Food production needs can nowadays only be achieved by the optimization of agricultural management, i.e. fertilizer input, irrigation, improved crop rotations. The focus on increasing yields raised...

DEFORESTATION AND AGROFORESTRY ADOPTION IN TROPICAL FORESTS: CAN WE GENERALIZE? SOME RESULTS FROM CAMPECHE, MEXICO AND RONDONIA, BRAZIL AgEcon
Casey, James F.; Caviglia-Harris, Jill L..
The adoption of sustainable agriculture and other sustainable forestry methods that can help to reduce tropical deforestation have received a great deal of attention in the literature (Adesina and Zinnah 1993, Akinola and Young 1985, Feder and Slade 1984, Holden 1993, Kebede et al. 1990). Although results from different studies can be compared in an absolute sense, there are very few individual studies that compare results and determine, through empirical analysis, whether policy can be universally applied. This paper uses farm-level data to determine whether some universal conclusions can be drawn about the adoption of agroforestry by peasant farmers in developing countries by comparing the land use choices of farmers in Rondônia, Brazil and Campeche,...

Application of molecular information in sustainable animal breeding R. Bras. Zootec.
Koning,Dirk-Jan de.
Livestock genomics is aimed at dissecting the genetic control of variation in economically important trait, such as disease resistance and product yield/quality. Unraveling the genetic control of such complex traits remains very challenging but farm animals are now well placed to bridge the gap between human biology and traditional model species. Livestock species share with model species the benefits of controlled breeding, while their biology is often much closer to that of humans. Livestock genetics can exploit the abundant genetic variation between divergent breeds as well as segregating variation within breeds, thus getting the best of both worlds. Large numbers of QTL have been detected for a variety of traits but for only a handful has the...
