| In human dominated landscapes many diverse, and often antagonistic, human activities are intentionally and inadvertently determining the supply of various ecosystem services. Understanding how different social and ecological factors shape the availability of ecosystem services is essential for fair and effective policy and management. In this paper, we evaluate how well alternative social-ecological models of human impact on ecosystems explain patterns of 16 ecosystem services (ES) across the 62 municipalities of the Norrström drainage basin in Sweden. | The lakes in the northern highlands of Wisconsin, USA, the lakes and wetlands of Kristianstads Vattenrike in southern Sweden, and the Everglades of Florida, USA, provide cases that can be used to compare the linkages between ecological resilience and social dynamics. The erosion of ecological resilience in aquatic and wetland ecosystems is often a result of past management actions and is manifest as a real or perceived ecological crisis. Learning is a key ingredient in response to the loss of ecological resilience. | The increasing number of deteriorating old dams that need renovation or have lost their function make dam removal a viable management option. There are at least four major reasons for dam removal: safety, law and policy, economy, and ecology. Here we discuss 17 Swedish dams that were recently considered for removal. Because dam removal usually causes controversy, dam removal initiatives may succeed, fail, or result in a compromise such as a bypass channel for migrating fish. We identify and discuss three major obstructions to dam removal: funding, cultural-historical values, and threatened species. | Cities and towns have become increasingly interested in building resilience to cope with surprises, however, how to do this is often unclear. We evaluated the ability of the Resilience Assessment Workbook to help urban areas incorporate resilience thinking into their planning practice by exploring how a resilience assessment process complemented existing planning in the local government of Eskilstuna, Sweden. We conducted this evaluation using participant observation, semistructured interviews, and a survey of the participants. | Material from three pieces of rock from Ramsåsa, site E, was divided into size fractions 0.106, 0.212, 0.355, 0.425 and 0.5 mm. Larger sizes were absent. The three assemblages were examined and compared with each other, also per fraction, and with residue samples from site E. The latter are proportionately not representative of the faunas of which they must have been part, specimens measuring 0.5 mm or more. The residue labels refer to Ørvig and his student Peyel. The results of the comparison between the assemblages from the rocks and from the residues are hardly complementary. | The Palaearctic species of the Gasteruption assectator aggregate (Hymenoptera, Gasteruptiidae) are revised and three species are recognised. Two species are re-instated: Gasteruption boreale (Thomson, 1883), stat. n. and G. nigritarse (Thomson, 1883), stat. n., and both are excluded from the synonymy with G. assectator (Linnaeus, 1758). | Within the thelodont dominated fauna of Ramsåsa, site C, Skåne, southern Sweden (Ludlow, Whitcliffian), the scales of the Thelodus parvidens group outnumber those of the combined T. sculptilis-T. admirabilis groups, some specimens of which are indistinguishable. Scale forms that might belong to one of several Thelodus taxa are designated as forma baltica (new form), forma T. radiosus Lehman, and forma T. ramosus Lehman, whereas forma T. querceus Lehman is introduced to cover a particular (heterogeneous?) group of monocuspid scales previously assigned to T. trilobatus Hoppe. | The microvertebrate assemblages from Ramsåsa sites D and ‘south of church’, Skåne, south Sweden are described for the first time. Analysis of these microvertebrate assemblages from the Öved Sandstone Formation of Skåne indicates a Ludlow rather than Pridoli age. One of two faunas from Ramsåsa site D contained the zonal fossil Thelodus sculptilis and the other T. sculptilis in association with Paralogania ludlowiensis and Thelodus carinatus. The presence of T. carinatus is the youngest record of this species in Laurussia, and indicative of the transitional phase between the Andreolepis hedei and T. sculptilis Zones of the East Baltic Microvertebrate Standard. | Swedish research on organic farming is to a large extent funded by directed calls for research on organic food systems. These funders are the research council Formas, SLU EkoForsk at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the Ekhaga foundation. Furthermore, the Swedish Farmers’ Foundation for Agricultural Research (SLF) is funding research on organic farming within their ordinary research programmes, and the projects addressing organic farming are reported here.
