In human dominated landscapes many diverse, and often antagonistic, human activities are intentionally and inadvertently determining the supply of various ecosystem services. Understanding how different social and ecological factors shape the availability of ecosystem services is essential for fair and effective policy and management. In this paper, we evaluate how well alternative social-ecological models of human impact on ecosystems explain patterns of 16 ecosystem services (ES) across the 62 municipalities of the Norrström drainage basin in Sweden. We test four models of human impact on ecosystems, land use, ecological modernization, ecological footprint, and location theory, and test their ability to predict both individual ES and bundles of... |

The lakes in the northern highlands of Wisconsin, USA, the lakes and wetlands of Kristianstads Vattenrike in southern Sweden, and the Everglades of Florida, USA, provide cases that can be used to compare the linkages between ecological resilience and social dynamics. The erosion of ecological resilience in aquatic and wetland ecosystems is often a result of past management actions and is manifest as a real or perceived ecological crisis. Learning is a key ingredient in response to the loss of ecological resilience. Learning is facilitated through networks that operate in distinct arenas and are structured for dialogue, synthesis, and imaginative solutions to chart alternative futures. The networks also help counter maladaptive processes such as information... |

The increasing number of deteriorating old dams that need renovation or have lost their function make dam removal a viable management option. There are at least four major reasons for dam removal: safety, law and policy, economy, and ecology. Here we discuss 17 Swedish dams that were recently considered for removal. Because dam removal usually causes controversy, dam removal initiatives may succeed, fail, or result in a compromise such as a bypass channel for migrating fish. We identify and discuss three major obstructions to dam removal: funding, cultural-historical values, and threatened species. To facilitate dam removal, the reasons for, and the effects of, dam removal must be carefully explained, and the public and stakeholders must be kept... |

Cities and towns have become increasingly interested in building resilience to cope with surprises, however, how to do this is often unclear. We evaluated the ability of the Resilience Assessment Workbook to help urban areas incorporate resilience thinking into their planning practice by exploring how a resilience assessment process complemented existing planning in the local government of Eskilstuna, Sweden. We conducted this evaluation using participant observation, semistructured interviews, and a survey of the participants. Our findings show that the resilience assessment contributed to ongoing planning practices by addressing sustainability challenges that were not being addressed within the normal municipal planning or operations, such as local food... |

Forest certification, developed in the early 1990s, is a process in which independent assessors grant use of the certification label to producers who meet certain environmental and social criteria set for their forest products. This label was quickly seen to offer a market advantage and to signal corporate social and environmental responsibility. This paper focuses on international norms pertaining to environmental and indigenous rights, as manifested in cases of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)- and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)-compatible certification, and how these norms have been applied domestically and perceived locally in different states. Case studies are drawn from northern Sweden, northern Finland, and three... |

The European species of the subgenus Aliolus Say, 1836, of the genus Eubazus Nees, 1814, and of the genus Dicyrtaspis van Achterberg, 1980 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Brachistinae) are reviewed. The identity of Triaspis thomsoni Fahringer, 1934, and the interpretation by S˘ noflák (1953) are discussed. A lectotype is designated for T. thomsoni, a neotype for the types species of Aliolus Say, 1836 (Bracon trilobatus Say, 1836) and T. thomsoni sensu Šnoflák is described as a new species (Eubazus nigroventralis spec. nov.) from Bulgaria, Germany and Czech Republic. Two new species of the E. lepidus-group are described and illustrated (E. punctifer cpec. nov. from Bulgaria and E. planifacialis spec. nov. from The Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden). In addition, a... |

Material from three pieces of rock from Ramsåsa, site E, was divided into size fractions 0.106, 0.212, 0.355, 0.425 and 0.5 mm. Larger sizes were absent. The three assemblages were examined and compared with each other, also per fraction, and with residue samples from site E. The latter are proportionately not representative of the faunas of which they must have been part, specimens measuring 0.5 mm or more. The residue labels refer to Ørvig and his student Peyel. The results of the comparison between the assemblages from the rocks and from the residues are hardly complementary. Thelodont scales were obtained almost exclusively from the pieces of rock; acanthodian ‘modified trunk’ scales, spines and jawbones and rare birkeniid remains were restricted to... |

The Palaearctic species of the Gasteruption assectator aggregate (Hymenoptera, Gasteruptiidae) are revised and three species are recognised. Two species are re-instated: Gasteruption boreale (Thomson, 1883), stat. n. and G. nigritarse (Thomson, 1883), stat. n., and both are excluded from the synonymy with G. assectator (Linnaeus, 1758). The general distribution of both species is given for Europe and in detail for Sweden. A key to the valid Palaearctic species of the Gasteruption assectator aggregate is given; key characters and primary types are illustrated. Four new synonyms are listed: Foenus fumipennis Thomson, 1883, Trichofoenus breviterebrae Watanabe, 1934, and Gasteruption margotae Madl, 1987, are synonymized with Gasteruption boreale (Thomson,... |

Within the thelodont dominated fauna of Ramsåsa, site C, Skåne, southern Sweden (Ludlow, Whitcliffian), the scales of the Thelodus parvidens group outnumber those of the combined T. sculptilis-T. admirabilis groups, some specimens of which are indistinguishable. Scale forms that might belong to one of several Thelodus taxa are designated as forma baltica (new form), forma T. radiosus Lehman, and forma T. ramosus Lehman, whereas forma T. querceus Lehman is introduced to cover a particular (heterogeneous?) group of monocuspid scales previously assigned to T. trilobatus Hoppe. Among the acanthodians, Nostolepis striata scales predominate. The checklist of N. striata trunk scales is extended to 62 characters. The smallest nostolepid teeth known so far are... |

The microvertebrate assemblages from Ramsåsa sites D and ‘south of church’, Skåne, south Sweden are described for the first time. Analysis of these microvertebrate assemblages from the Öved Sandstone Formation of Skåne indicates a Ludlow rather than Pridoli age. One of two faunas from Ramsåsa site D contained the zonal fossil Thelodus sculptilis and the other T. sculptilis in association with Paralogania ludlowiensis and Thelodus carinatus. The presence of T. carinatus is the youngest record of this species in Laurussia, and indicative of the transitional phase between the Andreolepis hedei and T. sculptilis Zones of the East Baltic Microvertebrate Standard. A fauna with Thelodus parvidens, from south of Ramsåsa church, proved only broadly datable as... |

Swedish research on organic farming is to a large extent funded by directed calls for research on organic food systems. These funders are the research council Formas, SLU EkoForsk at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the Ekhaga foundation. Furthermore, the Swedish Farmers’ Foundation for Agricultural Research (SLF) is funding research on organic farming within their ordinary research programmes, and the projects addressing organic farming are reported here. In 2013 a special program for research on organic farming was launched, which was a joint call of SLF and Formas for the period 2014-2016. This research programme was also jointly financed by the two partners. Swedish research on organic farming is... |
