Genetic population structure of the Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwest Indian Ocean: Sex-biased differentiation, congruency between markers and its incidence in a way of stock assessment ArchiMer
Muths, Delphine; Grewe, R.; Jean, Claire; Bourjea, Jerome.
Genetic variation was surveyed at 11 microsatellite loci and at 517 bp of the mitochondrial control region to investigate the presence of genetic stock structure in swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in four proximal localities of the southwest Indian Ocean. One aim of this study was to serve as a preliminary examination for congruency of structure detected by these two genetic markers, prior to conducting a more comprehensive basin-wide survey of the Indian Ocean and nearby surrounding areas. Analyses of multilocus microsatellite genotypes and mitochondrial control region sequences both revealed a great homogeneity between samples. Genetic diversity detected at the regional scale was not significantly higher than detected at the local scale. Results suggest that...

Is the recruitment a key biological process in the hypothetical NAO-Atlantic tunas relationships? ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc.
In the recent past, it has been put forward that recruitment of the North Atlantic albacore, East Atlantic bluefin tuna and North Atlantic swordfish could be related to the North AtlanticOscillation (NAO). In this document, the biological processes behind the NAO/recruitmentrelationship are further investigated. Then, the possible relationship between the East Atlanticbluefin tuna recruitment was re-investigated. The linear relationship appeared to be only due to the low frequency signal, both BFT recruitment and NAO displaying a pseudo-cyclic upwardtrend, but year-to-year fluctuations were not synchronous. The superposed epoch analysis, thatwas conducted to test for possible non-linear and non-monotonous relationship did not reveal any clear connection....

Characterisation of 22 polymorphic microsatellite loci for the Broadbill Swordfish, Xiphias gladius ArchiMer
Bradman, H.; Grewe, P.; Bourjea, Jerome; Muths, Delphine; Appleton, B..
The Broadbill Swordfish is harvested by fisheries throughout the world. In order to devise more effective management strategies, we need a clear understanding of the population structure of the species. From a library of 29 tetranucleotide repeats, 22 microsatellite markers were characterised for 94 swordfish samples captured from eastern and western Australia. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 26 and observed heterozygosity from 0.066 to 0.923. We have identified 18 microsatellites that will be valuable in the examination of swordfish population structure.

Reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (Reunion Island). Part 2: fecundity and spawning pattern ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Fauvel, Christian.
Batch fecundity and relative fecundity of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean were estimated from seven gravid swordfish females (size range 127-225 cm lower jaw-to-fork length, LJFL) with unovulated, hydrated oocytes collected onboard Reunion-based (France) longline swordfish fishing vessels between December 1999 to January 2001. To investigate the spawning pattern of swordfish, we used data collected through a combination of two at sea sampling regimes. A total of 17 007 geo-located size data of swordfish were recorded during 8 years (1993-2001) and a total of 1727 (size range 75-289 cm, LJFL) swordfish gonads (1107 females and 620 males) were sampled from May 1998 to January 2001. The estimated batch fecundity ranged from 995...

Reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (Reunion Island). Part 1: oocyte development, sexual maturity and spawning ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Fauvel, Christian.
The reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) was investigated from catches of the Reunion Island-based longline swordfish fishery between 19-25 degrees S and 48-54 degrees E. Thus, 1727 swordfish (size range 75-289 cm, lower jaw-to-fork length, LJFL) were sampled on board commercial fishing vessels during the period of May 1998 to January 2001. Reproductive activity was assessed using macroscopic gonad characteristics, trends of gonadal indexes for both sexes, oocyte size-frequency distributions and microscopic investigation of oocyte development stages. Size at first maturity (L-50) for female and male swordfish was estimated in Indian Ocean for the first time. L50 was estimated at 170 cm and 120 cm (LJFL) for females and males, respectively....

Stock structure of the swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwest Indian Ocean: A preliminary study ArchiMer
Jean, Claire; Bourjea, Jerome; Jouen, Emmanuel; Taquet, Marc.
Stock structure of swordfish (Xiphias gladius Linnaeus, 1758) from four areas of the South West Indian Ocean was conducted using Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) on mtDNA control region and six amplified microsatellite loci. No significant differences were found among the four locations using either molecular technique. Most variability was found within populations, with only a small proportion of variation among samples, suggesting a unique stock of swordfish in the South West Indian Ocean. The sample size of this study is too small to reveal significant structure among the sampling locations. These results are baseline for a future larger scale project in the whole Indian Ocean.

Report of the 2019 ICCAT Workshop on Swordfish biology studies for growth, reproduction and genetics ArchiMer
Gillepsie, K; Coelho, R; Farley, J; Garibaldi, F; Gioacchini, G; Pappalardo, L; Poisson, Francois; Quelle, P; Rosa, D; Saber, S.
This report describes the June, 2019 ICCAT workshop on swordfish biology studies for growth, reproduction and genetics, hosted by the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, Olhão, Portugal . The major objectives of the workshop were to 1) refine sampling and biological data collection protocols, 2) develop protocols and start the sample processing and analysis, and 3) plan for the project future steps. The biological sampling program was established by ICCAT’s Swordfish Species Group in 2018, aiming to improve knowledge of the stock distribution, age and gender of the catch, growth rate, age at maturation, maturation rate, spawning season and location and diet. This work will contribute to the next major advance in the assessment of swordfish status,...
