Self-made pest control products for organic cotton production in Nimar region, Madhya Pradesh, India Organic Eprints
Utz, Claudia; Zweifel, Juliana; Mandloi, Lokendra S.; Patel, Dharmendra; Verma, Rajeev; Andres, Christian; Bhullar, Gurbir S.; Studer, Christoph.
Homemade organic pest control products offer an ecological, healthy and low-cost alternative to ready-made products. Yet the recipes are not standardised and the products vary in quality and concentration of the active ingredients. bioRe R, together with the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), engages in research activities to address this challenge and improve pest management strategies in organic farming. During the cotton cropping season 2013–14 one on-station and two on-farm trials were conducted with the objective of comparing different spraying intervals of the most commonly used home-made organic pest control products in order to identify an optimum level of crop protection. The study focused on the effect of the spraying intervals on...

Evaluation of organic pest management strategies to control the cocoa mirid (Monalonion dissimulatum Dist.), Alto Beni, Bolivia Organic Eprints
Ferrari, Leone; Florez, Andrez; Velásquez, Fortunato; Schneider, Monika; Andres, Christian; Milz, Joachim; Trujillo, German; Alcon, Freddy; Fromm, Ingrid.
The cocoa mirid (Monalonion dissimulatum) is one of the major pests in cocoa cultivation in Alto Beni, Bolivia, causing up to 50% yield losses. The most common control method is the manual removal of the nymphs sucking at the pods in the morning. This practice is very time-consuming, and farmers often do not dispose of enough time to perform these control measures. Therefore, there is an urgent need for more efficient practices to control this important pest. The present study evaluated the pathogenicity of two strains of Beauveria bassiana for the control of Monalonion dissimulatum on cocoa: a non-native, commercialized strain (Probiobass MR, Probiotec S.R.L.), and a native strain of Alto Beni, which is not yet commercialized (isolated by the local...

Dexipm-Grapevine: a multicriteria assessment tool of the sustainability for grapevine farming systems Organic Eprints
Metral, Raphaël; Dubuc, Morgane; Delière, Laurent; Petitgenet, Morgane; Gary, Christian.
The development of innovative farming systems to reach new goals of agricultural sustainability needs new methods for efficiency assessment. DEXiPM-Grapevine© is a multicriteria assessment tool for overall sustainability of grapevine farming systems adapted from DEXiPM arable crops (Pelzer et al, 2012). DEXiPM-Grapevine© was implemented during the European PURE Project 2012-2015 (Integrated Pest Management (IPM) solutions in agriculture) in order to assess and compare various innovative grapevine systems. This model includes 65 basic attributes describing the cropping system, which are then combined into 97 aggregated attributes, designed to assess the economic, social and environmental performances. This model is based on expert knowledge and agricultural...

Beheersing bonenvlieg Organic Eprints

On-farm examination of resistant early and maincrop potato varieties in Hungarian organic farming Organic Eprints
Papp, Orsolya.
Conditions in organic farming bring other challenges to seedstock breeders than seen in conventional farming. The different way of fertilization and reliance on contact-effect pesticides demands more disease tolerant or resistant varieties. The Hungarian organic potato grower mainly relied on well-known conventional varieties under their organic cultivation, but these varieties are not always best suited for organic farming. Therefore ÖMKi initiated a participatory-research to test resistant potato varieties, improve production technology, and facilitate the cooperation among the farmers and the sector’s other stakeholders like advisors and breeders. This participatory research began in 2012 and continues in 2013 on three different subjects. In this paper...
