Aspects of the geochemistry of dissolved and particulate Cd, Cu, Ni, Co, and Pb in the Dover Strait ArchiMer
James, Rh; Statham, Pj; Morley, Nh; Burton, Jd.
Water column samples have been collected at six stations across the Dover Strait within the framework of the FluxManche programme every month for fifteen months and analyzed for particulate and dissolved trace metals. Important seasonal variations in trace metal distributions have been identified. Dissolved Cu and Ni exhibit similar behaviour in the Strait; while seasonal variation in their distribution may be determined by changes in freshwater input, additional processes including biological uptake and regeneration and benthic input probably perturb water column inventories. Consistently with the suggestion of other authors, Co and Mn in both the dissolved and particulate phase exhibit some degree of covariance; substantial increases in the concentration...

Distribution et évolution saisonnière du cuivre dissous dans un écosystème estuarien macrotidal d'Europe occidentale (estuaire de l'Aule, France) ArchiMer
Bordin, G.
The seasonal variations of total dissolved copper were surveyed during one year (1983/1984) in the Aulne estuary (Western Brittany, France), an ecosystem with a high rate of water renewal. Copper in filtered water samples (after and without acidification) was determined after preconcentration on Chelex 100, and the eluates were analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy. The concentrations of free and complexed copper were then plotted versus chlorosity. Globally, the total dissolved copper concentrations tend to decrease with salinity. The role of physicochemical parameters such as pH and suspended matter (adsorption-desorption mechanisms) on dissolved copper content is shown to be significant. With a variable intensity, desorption...

Defining the chemical character of aerosols from the atmosphere of the mediterranean-sea and surrounding regions ArchiMer
Chester, R; Nimmo, M; Alarcon, M; Saydam, C; Murphy, Kjt; Sanders, Gs; Corcoran, P.
Atmospherically-transported trace metals can play an important role in biogeochemical cycles in the Mediterranean Sea. However, although the magnitude of trace metal air to sea fluxes is initially dependent on the metal concentrations in the air, it is the ''chemical character'' of the aerosol which constrains the fate of the metals in sea water; for example, the solubility of trace metals is considerably greater from anthropogenic than from crustal components. To a first approximation the chemical composition of the Mediterranean particulate aerosol is controlled by the extent to which an anthropogenic-rich ''background'' material, having a mainly European origin, is perturbed by mixing with crustal components having a desert origin. These perturbations...
