Financing Business School Education: What Are the Economic Returns and Implications for Africa? AgEcon
Murinde, Victor.
To be able to finance their physical assets and working capital costs, business schools mainly raise funds from any or a combination of the following: direct funding by the public sector or the government; income from providing educational services; debt (bank and bond); equity by private owners; public-private partnerships; research grants; and private sector endowment funds. This is a financing decision. But, it is the capital budgeting decision that matters! Business schools have to yield positive economic rates of return to become viable and attractive investment propositions; they must also yield positive non-pecuniary benefits. This paper provides a selective survey of the evidence on the core question of the rate of return to university education,...

THE IMPORTANCE OF EQUESTRIAN TOURISM ENTERPRISES IN TOURISM DESTINATION MANAGEMENT IN HUNGARY AgEcon
Konyves, Erika; Suta, Eva.
Hungary is the pioneer of the European Equestrian Tourism. Several thousands foreign tourists visited specific equestrian programmes already in the 1960’s and 1970’s. At the same times some hundred thousands of holiday tourists visited equestrian shows and programs organised in different areas of our country. From the beginning of the 1990’s equestrian enterprises (pensions, stables, specialized equestrian services) have been established. The equestrian tourism enterprises are well represented all over the country. They are well organised, the Hungarian Equestrian Tourism Association integrates 80% of equestrian tourism enterprises. Uniquely in Europe, the voluntary professional qualification, called “the horseshoe qualification system” started in 1998....

Reviewing, Reviewers and the Scientific Enterprise AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
Despite their critical importance to the scientific enterprise, reviewers receive no formal training and reviewing has become a skill that they pick up through trial and error. Additionally, because most reviewers do not receive any feedback on their performance, any bad reviewing habits become entrenched over time. This has contributed to significant and unnecessary anxiety about reviewing and to antagonistic encounters between reviewers and authors. This paper seeks to correct this situation by defining reviewers as co-creators of scholarship and the reviewing as a quality control process in the production of scientific scholarship. The paper provides three groups of activities aimed at creating the right mindset among reviewers to facilitate this...

MEDIA COVERAGE OF AGROBIOTECHNOLOGY: DID THE BUTTERFLY HAVE AN EFFECT? AgEcon
Marks, Leonie A.; Kalaitzandonakes, Nicholas G.; Allison, Kevin; Zakharova, Ludmila.
This study examines media coverage of genetically modified (GM) crops in a risk communication framework. Content analysis is employed to investigate how specific environmental, food safety, and landmark events, such as the monarch butterfly and Pusztai controversies, and the cloning of Dolly-the-sheep, were reported by the media. Media coverage is from United Kingdom and United States newspapers over the period 1990 through 2001. On balance, findings show that the UK press has been more negative than the U.S. press in its coverage of GM crops. In addition, environmental and food safety events had a significant impact on the level and cycle of GM crop coverage.

SYMPOSIUM--CONTEMPORARY AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS IN AUSTRALIA AgEcon
Campbell, Keith O..
It seems to me that there are three major aspects of agricultural economics research which we might fruitfully examine in this symposium: (i) the nature of the research which has been and should be undertaken; (ii) the organisation required for effective research; and ( iii) the financing of such research.

EQUINE REFERRING VETERINARIAN SATISFACTION WITH THE VETERINARY TEACHING HOSPITAL, MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY - JULY 1, 1999 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2000 AgEcon
Lloyd, James W.; Donovan, Debra; Camara, Youssouf; Leeper, Delta; Gross, Renee.
Understanding clients' wants and needs is vital to the sustained success of any service business, and veterinary medicine offers no exception. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine (MSU-CVM) has successfully maintained a position at the forefront of the veterinary profession throughout most of its history. The staff has consistently been composed of clinicians who have been chosen because of their excellence and expertise. However, the assumption that emphasis on clinical excellence will, by itself, provide the foundation for sustained success in the client flow and business at the hospital has been unchallenged to date. Additionally, there are many areas in veterinary medicine that are...

A Dynamic Adoption Model with Bayesian Learning: Application to the U.S. Soybean Market AgEcon
Ma, Xingliang; Shi, Guanming.
Agricultural technology adoption is often a sequential process. Farmers may adopt a new technology in part of their land first and then adjust in later years based on what they learn from the earlier partial adoption. This paper presents a dynamic adoption model with Bayesian learning, in which forward-looking farmers learn from their own experience and from their neighbors about the new technology. The model is compared to that of a myopic model, in which farmers only maximize their current benefits. We apply the analysis to a sample of U.S. soybean farmers from year 2000 to 2004 to examine their adoption pattern of a newly developed genetically modified (GM) seed technology. We show that the myopic model predicts lower adoption rates in early years than...

Agriculture in the Economy: the evolution of economists' perceptions over three centuries AgEcon
Throsby, C.D..
This paper traces the perceptions of the agricultural sector held by economists over the last three centuries, with particular emphasis on how the evolution of these ideas has influenced the state of present-day thinking about the economic role of agriculture in developed and developing economies. The paper begins with the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, leading to a consideration of the place of agriculture in the work of the major figures of classical political economy from Adam Smith to Marx. The rise of neo-classical economics, and its influence on twentieth century thinking, is discussed. In the contemporary period, particular attention is paid to agriculture in development theory, with an assessment of conflicting theoretical ideas about the...

Elegy, ode, or panegyric? Practising agricultural economics in Australia, 1975-99 AgEcon
Godden, David P..
Changes are investigated in the Australian agricultural economics profession, 1975–99, using a conventional microeconomics framework of supply and demand for agricultural economists. Aggregate exogenous factors such as changes in the agricultural and tertiary education sectors, and changes in beliefs about the proper role of government, have changed both supply and demand conditions for agricultural economists. The profession has responded by shifting its focus away from narrowly agricultural policy, especially marketing policy, towards areas of market failure such as environmental and natural resource issues.

A magyarországi mezőgazdasági szaktanácsadás intézményi jellemzői AgEcon
Szekely, Erika.
A mezőgazdasági tanácsadás jelentős múltra tekint vissza hazánkban. Hosszabb távon a tanácsadás piacvezéreltté tétele szolgálja leginkább a...
