Skin Doses on the Lens for Temporomandibular Joint Exam in Cone Beam Computed Tomography BABT

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the kerma at the surface of the lens in TMJ CBCT and to derive the equivalent dose. An anthropomorphic phantom of the head and neck manufactured by Radiation Support Devices (model RS-230) was used. The dosimetric measurements were obtained by using fourteen thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) dosimeters (LiF: Mg, Ti), divided in two pairs (one pair for each eye) and positioned on the surface of the phantom, per scanner evaluated. The tomographic images were acquired in three types of CBCT equipment (CS 9000, Gendex GXCB 500 and i-CAT). Psychological factors can be correlated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), but the mechanisms are unknown. In the present study, we examined the microstructural changes and expression of proinflammatory cytokines in mandibular condylar cartilage of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in a psychological stress animal model. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly specialized articulation that differs from all the other synovial articulations for many reasons. In children, different from what we observe in adults, these articulations have rarely been studied under the morphofunctional aspect, mainly in the embryonary and fetal stages. In this study 10 fetuses with ages varying from 16 to 39 weeks of intrauterine life were used, and it could be observed that the fibers and thickness of the articular disc, as well as the articular capsule and the condylar process, suffer modifications according to age. Evaluation of the Prevalence of Bifid Mandibular Condyle Detected on Cone Beam Computed Tomography Images in a Turkish Population International Journal of Morphology

The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of the BMC phenomenon in a Turkish patient population. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 2634 consecutive patients were retrospectively reviewed. The Chi-squared test was used to determine potential differences in the distribution of BMCs when stratified by sex and side. Among the 2634 patients, 42 (1.7%) patients were found to have BMC. Of these 42 patients, 22 were female (0.8%) and 20 were male (0.7%) with age ranging from 29 to 68 years (mean age 47.47). Ultrastructural Analysis of Masseter and Left Medial Pterigoid Muscles, After Unilateral Mandibular Molar Extraction: Experimental Study International Journal of Morphology

Twelve adult male Wistar rats (220 g average weight) were divided in 3 experimental groups: GI -15. GII ­ 30 and GIII ­ 60 days, after mandibular molar extraction, with three experimental animals and one control per group. Qualitatively, ultrastructural changes of protein filaments from myofibrils of these muscles and ipsilateral to the extractions were observed. Ultrastructure asymmetry and disorganization of Z line and I band, in the experimental group GII, of Medial Pterigoid muscle (MPT) were observed. Insertion of the Superior Head of the Lateral Pterigoid Muscle in the Human Fetuses International Journal of Morphology

The lateral pterygoid muscle, more specifically its superior head, as we know, is closely related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Particularly in children, in contrast with what was observed in adults, these joints have been rarely studied, by the anatomic functional aspect, little knowing about its functions in the embryonic and fetal periods. We used, in this work, 12 fetuses ranging in age from 16 to 39 weeks of intrauterine life, where we observed that the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle is inserted in the disc and in the articular capsule, in all age groups studied, and also, that the fibers and the thickness of the articular disc is, as well as the articular capsule suffer modifications in accordance with the period of development

Among structural alterations that can be a risk factor for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is condylar asymmetry. In order to measure the condylar asymmetry index in panoramic x-rays quantitatively, two methods have been proposed: those of Habets and Kjellberg. The purpose of this study was to analyze the condylar position in the maximum mouth opening in a group of individuals with and without temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) using corrected magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It was analyzed the MRIs of 200 temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of 100 adults (25 males and 75 females). Prevalence of Vertical Condilar Asymmetry of the Temporomandibular Joint in Patients with Signs and Symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders International Journal of Morphology

Vertical condylar asymmetry (VCA) is considered a risk factor for the development of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). VCA is determined by comparing the vertical condylar height between the left and right condyle. Mandibular Fossa Depth Variations: Relation to Age and Dental State International Journal of Morphology

A mandibular fossa depth correlation with dental condition and age in humans. 120 fresh male mandibular fossas were measured from the deepest area of the fossa to a horizontal reference line. The samples were classified according to age and dental state (dentate, partially dentate and totally edentulous) and a multivariate analysis was employed. Subjects average age was 41.1 (20-85). There were more partially dentate individuals (59.16%) than dentate (30%) or edentulous ones (10.83%). Average fossa depth was 6.9 mm (6.6-7.1 mm 95%CI) which significantly decreased with increased age and dental health deterioration (p<0.01). The objective of this study was to assess the association between an increase in the proportion of the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle (SHLP) inserted into the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc and the presence of anterior disc displacement diagnosed by using MRI. We analyzed 75 images of patients with anterior displacement and 75 controls with normal relationship between the mandibular head and the articular tubercle also diagnosed by MRI. Prevalence of the Third Head of the Lateral Pterygoid Muscle: A Magnetic Resonance Image Study International Journal of Morphology

The lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) is important in the physiology and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which has described the presence of a third head in the lateral pterygoid muscle (THLPM). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of THLPM and its relationship with the TMJ disc through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It was evaluated 178 MRI of the TMJ of healthy individuals, in images that presented THLPM, and these were defined and measured at the surface inserted into the disc. The prevalence of THLPM was 20.22% (n = 36).
