A new termite species of the genus Dihoplotermes Araújo (Blattaria, Isoptera, Termitidae) from the Brazilian Amazonian rainforest Acta Amazonica
AZEVEDO,Renato Almeida de; DAMBROS,Cristian de Sales; MORAIS,José Wellington de.
ABSTRACT Dihoplotermes, a previously monotypic genus, is now composed of two species. Dihoplotermes taurus sp. nov., a new Termitinae termite species, is illustrated and described based on morphological characters from soldiers, workers, and imago. The new species is distinguished from Dihoplotermes inusitatus Araujo by having a spine-like protuberance with blunt apex on the postmentum, the presence of a spine on the gizzard and the absence of dimorphic soldiers. Furthermore, the internal morphological characteristics of a Dihoplotermes worker are described for the first time. Both internal and external morphological characters were used to improve the characterization of the species.

This study aimed to determine the number of termite epigeal nests and estimate the soil turning capacity of termites in cultivated pasture environments and in a native vegetation area. Surveys were conducted in four areas: three pasture areas and a Cerrado area, measuring 5 ha each. For each nest, the height, the perimeter and diameter at the base were measured. The volume of each mound was calculated. Turned soil was determined by randomly sampling 30 termite mounds in a pasture area for bulk density determinations. The mean number of termite mounds per ha was 408; the highest number of termite nests (672 per ha) was found in the 10-year-old pasture. In terms of termite mound density, there was no difference between the Cerrado, 3-year-old pasture,...

Chemical communication in isoptera Neotropical Entomology
Costa-Leonardo,Ana M; Casarin,Fabiana E; Lima,Juliana T.
The semiochemicals produced by termites have been little studied compared to those of ants and bees. Among the limiting factors are the cryptic habits of termites, together with the difficulty in maintaining many species in the laboratory. The semiochemicals of Isoptera include trail, sex and alarm pheromones and a complex mixture of substances responsible for the recognition of nestmates. Although little is known about the semiochemicals of termites, available data indicate a strategy of pheromonal parsimony in the chemistry communication of these insects, i.e., the same compound is sometimes secreted by different glands, different species and for different functions.

External events related to the infection process of Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) (Isoptera: Termitidae) by the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae Neotropical Entomology
Neves,Pedro M.O.J.; Alves,Sérgio B..
The objectives of this study were to observe the external development of Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana on workers and soldiers of Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) and to establish comparisons between the insect fixation techniques known as critical point and desiccator. Termite workers and soldiers inoculated with B. bassiana (447) and M. anisopliae (1037) were utilized. After inoculation, the insects were left at 25±0.5°C. In order to make observations, samples from both castes were removed at 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168h after inoculation. The external development of M. anisopliae and B. bassiana conidia on the termite C. cumulans showed that M. anisopliae and B. bassiana conidial germination occurred on several regions of...

Gut structure of two species of the neotropical genus Tauritermes Krishna (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) Neotropical Entomology
Godoy,Maria C..
Gut morphology of two species of the neotropical genus Tauritermes Krishna was analyzed. Detailed description of the coiling gut and the cuticular armature of the gizzard and first and second proctodeal segments of pseudergates are given. The characteristics of Tauritermes gut followed the pattern previously known for the family, but some differences among this genus and other Kalotermitidae genera were: the length of the midgut, the structure and cuticular ornamentation of the first and second proctodeal segments, the junction of the third and fourth proctodeal segments and the armature of the rectal valve. Tauritermes was differentiated from other Kalotermitidae genera by means of the gut characters, currently used in termite systematics and phylogeny.

Run to the nest: A parody on the Iron Maiden song by Corotoca spp. (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Moreira,Igor Eloi; Pires-Silva,Carlos Moreno; Ribeiro,Kézia Gomes; Zilberman,Bruno; Bezerra-Gusmão,Maria Avany.
Abstract Rove beetles belonging to the genus Corotoca (Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae) are termitophiles exclusively found in nests of Constrictotermes (Isoptera: Termitidae). We observed the reproductive behavior of Corotoca melantho and C. fontesi during host (Constrictotermes cyphergaster) foraging events. The reproductive behaviors of both species are similar. The variables collected for analysis were distance traveled, the time of larval deposition, nest return time, and locomotion speed. The fact that the female stops in the middle of the foraging trail to deposit the larva leads to a discussion of how its physiological or voluntary mechanisms function to determine the correct stopping time and the importance of speed when returning to the nest as a...

Multiple reproductives in nests of the Neotropical termite Constrictotermes cyphergaster (Isoptera, Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Cunha,Hélida Ferreira da; Brandão,Divino.
Constrictotermes cyphergaster (Silvester, 1901) builds arboreal nests in Brazilian Cerrado stricto sensu, which are frequently cohabited by inquilines termites and by termitophiles. In a study made at the Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas, Goiás, Brazil, there were four nests with multiple reproductives, and secondary reproductives were found in 26 nests. Nymphs of Inquilinitermes were more abundant (9,47%) than nymphs of C. cyphergaster (0,78%).

Termiticide activities of wood extractives of Ziziphus mauritiana (Rhamnaceae) against subterranean termites under field conditions Rev. Bras. entomol.
Zulfiqar,Sumer; Ahmed,Sohail; Sufyan,Muhammad; Arshad,Muhammad; Nawaz,Ahmad; Hassan,Babar.
Abstract Synthetic wood preservatives are the causes of large-scale environmental pollution and few have been withdrawn from the commercial markets in the past years. The present studies focused on determination of naturally present extractives of Ziziphus mauritiana as less toxic wood protectant against subterranean termites. Firstly, natural resistance of Z. mauritiana heartwood against termite was determined by exposing stakes in the field. For the preparation of extractives, air-dried Z. mauritiana heartwood and bark shavings were soaked in 1 liter each of ethyl acetate, hexane, petroleum ether and water in a bottle separately. Different dipping treatment times (36 and 72 hours) at 10, 20 and 30% concentrations of extractives on Populus deltoides...

Gut anatomy of the worker caste of Neotropical genera Cylindrotermes Holmgren and Hoplotermes Light (Infraorder Isoptera, Termitidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Rocha,Mauricio Martins; Cuezzo,Carolina.
ABSTRACT Studies over the last six decades have shown that the gut anatomy of the termite worker caste provides a valuable set of taxonomic characters. However, the gut anatomy of most American termitine taxa is still little known. This study investigated the anatomy of the worker gut of the Neotropical termitine genera Cylindrotermes Holmgren and Hoplotermes Light. We provide descriptions and illustrations of the gut in situ and the cuticular ornamentation of the gizzard, enteric valve, and first proctodeal segment for both genera.

Effect of temperature and substrate moisture on group survival of Constrictotermes sp. (Isoptera: Termitidae) under laboratory conditions Rev. Bras. entomol.
Ferreira,Dinamarta V.; Cruz,Joseane S.; Sacramento,Jailton J.M.; Rocha,Marcos Leandro C.; Cristaldo,Paulo F.; Araújo,Ana Paula A..
ABSTRACT Laboratory bioassays should be performed under appropriate conditions that minimize stress and promote greater longevity to tested animals. For social insects, for instance, the stress triggered by removal individuals from nests may result in changes in their survival and behavior. Here we analyzed the effects of variations of different combinations of temperature and substrate moisture (mL of water/g of nest substrate) on group survival of Constrictotermes sp. (Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae). In general, lower substrate moisture resulted in faster mortality. On the other hand, groups survival longer at a temperature of 26 ºC and under higher substrate moisture (2–3 mL/7 g of nest substrate). The result of this study may contribute to the...

The exocrine glands of swarming females and physogastric queens of Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) (Isoptera, Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae) Zoologia
Ignatti,Ana Cristina; Costa-Leonardo,Ana Maria.
The histological study of the exocrine glands in the swarming females showed the presence of tergal glands, mandibular glands, salivary glands and sternal glands. Tergal and sternal glands are not developed in the physogastric queens, probably, because of a regression process. The development of mandibular glands is similar in swarming females and physogastric queens.
