BACKGROUND: Although tropical climate of Thailand is suitably endowed with biodiversity of insects, flies of medical importance is not well investigated. Using information from literature search, fly survey approach and specialist's experience, we review database of Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) dux Thomson (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), one of the priorities flesh fly species of medical importance in Thailand. RESULTS: This review deals with morphology, bionomics and medical involvement. Important morphological characteristics of egg, larva, puparia and adult were highlighted with illustration and/or micrographs. Search pertaining to molecular analysis used for fly identification and developmental rate of larvae were included. Medical involvement of larvae was... |

ABSTRACT The genus Planktothricoides Suda & Watanabe is considered as a 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) producer, affecting water quality and aquatic animal products worldwide. To date, there is limited information about the diversity of this genus from Thailand. In this study, Thai Planktothricoides strains were isolated from fish ponds and reservoirs in North, Northeast and Central regions for morphological examination, phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA, rbcLX and MIB synthase genes as well as GC/MS/MS analyses. The morphological results and the 16S rRNA and rbcLX phylogenies of Thai Planktothricodes strains enabled them to be designated as Planktothricoides raciborskii. Cell dimensions of Thai strains tested were in 1.86 to 5.96 µm length (L), 2.83... |

Climatic events can have disastrous consequences on rural livelihoods, which rely mainly on agriculture and natural resources. The way households and communities respond to climatic shocks depends on their available resources. We formulated that education is a human capital asset that can increase coping abilities in difficult times because education improves access to both social and economic resources. Based on the Thai government surveys of the living conditions and life quality of 68,343 rural villages for the years 2009 and 2011, we investigated the impacts of floods and droughts in 2010 on community welfare, i.e., consumption and income in 2011 at the village level. Using difference-in-difference methods, we analyzed how differential demographic... |

The health and productivity of marine ecosystems, habitats, and fisheries are deteriorating on the Andaman coast of Thailand. Because of their high dependence on natural resources and proximity to the ocean, coastal communities are particularly vulnerable to climate-induced changes in the marine environment. These communities must also adapt to the impacts of management interventions and conservation initiatives, including marine protected areas, which have livelihood implications. Further, communities on the Andaman coast are also experiencing a range of new economic opportunities associated in particular with tourism and agriculture. These complex and ongoing changes require integrated assessment of, and deliberate planning to increase, the adaptive... |

The range of diagnostic morphological features in the whole genus Mallotus is reviewed as background to the taxonomic treatment of section Rottleropsis s.l. Special emphasis is given to the indumentum, habit, stipules, leaves, extrafloral nectaries, domatia, inflorescences, flowers, pollen and fruits. Notes on the geographical distribution, ecology, pollinators, fruit and seed dispersal, and uses of the genus are also presented. The section Axenfeldia is reduced to sect. Rottleropsis on account of the absence of suitable morphological characters to distinguish them. A taxonomic revision of 38 species of sect. Rottleropsis s.l. from Malesia, Thailand and Africa is presented, together with regional and synoptical identification keys, distribution maps and... |

Fourteen species of Sauropus are recognised for Malesia, 21 for Thailand. Two species are described as new, S. asymmetricus of Sumatra and S. shawii of Borneo. Many new synonyms, especially for S. androgynus and S. rhamnoides, are provided. The latter two species have a much wider distribution than described before and both are difficult to separate from each other. A phylogeny based on morphological and palynological data proved futile, but showed that Sauropus together with Breynia and Glochidion are embedded in the paraphyletic Phyllanthus. Most species which formerly belonged to Synostemon and are now included in Sauropus are probably, with the exception of S. bacciformis, related to Breynia and Glochidion. Because of the poor phylogenetic results the... |

A new genus is split off the genus Craspedolcus Enderlein, 1920 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Braconinae): Maculibracon gen. n. with type species Maculibracon abruptus sp. n. The genus Craspedolcus Enderlein sensu stricto is redefined, a key to both genera and to their species in China, Thailand and Vietnam is included. Craspedolcus obscuriventris Enderlein, 1920, (syn. n.) is a new synonym of C. vagatus (Smith, 1858), as Ipobracon maculicosta Enderlein, 1920 and Iphiaulax bhotanensis Cameron, 1907 of Maculibracon simlaensis (Cameron, 1899), comb. n. The genus Craspedolcus is recorded from China for the first time with two species: Craspedolcus fraternus Enderlein, 1920, and C. politus sp. n. The genus Maculibracon is represented by three species in China: M.... |

An account of Pothos for Thailand and Indochina [taken here to comprise Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao P.D.R, Vietnam, subtropical China (Guangxi, Guangdong, Guizhou, Hainan, Hong Kong, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan)] and Taiwan is presented as a precursor of the forthcoming Flora of Thailand treatment. Fourteen species are recognised; one newly described and three validated for the first time. Extensive new synonymies are proposed. Pothos hermaphroditus (syn. Batis hermaphrodita), P. angustifolius (syn. P. scandens var. helferianus), P. leptospadix, P. cognatus (syn. P. scandens var. cognatus) P. zollingerianus (syn. P. scandens var. zollingerianus). Two new Elysia species were found in brackish mangrove habitats in the southern part of the Gulf of Thailand in the area around Pattani. Elysia bangtawaensis, a large species with grooved rhinophores, was discovered living on bare mud in mangrove forests. This species looks like a fallen leaf and shows sophisticated phototrophic behaviour enabling it to survive without feeding while producing many eggs over a long period. Elysia siamensis, a small species, was found on filamentous green algae in a brackish channel. The latter species has long, thin, cylindrical rhinophores, and is further characterized by a screw-like penis, and a long thin process on the tip of its metapodium. |

Themeda Forssk. (Gramineae) has 11 taxa in Malesia. A revision is provided with keys, synonymy, where necessary lectotypifications, descriptions, and notes. Themeda gigantea nearly is a Philippine endemic, but with a single collection from Halmahera, and one as far away as the Solomon Islands. Themeda caudata is reduced to T. villosa var. caudata, comb. nov., and T. intermedia to T. villosa var. polyantha, comb. nov. Themeda polycephala, a new species, is described from Laos. Themeda hookeri is a new record for Thailand. |
