Morphological variability of the nanoplanktonic diatom Thalassiosira laevis from coastal waters of Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) Boletín de la Sociedad
Sar,Eugenia A; Sunesen,Inés.
Morphological variability of the nanoplanktonic diatom Thalassiosira laevis from coastal waters of Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Despite the fact that the genus Thalassiosira was previous and extensively studied including ultrastructural analysis of species found in phytoplanktonic samples collected from marine waters of Argentina, nanoplanktonic species have been frequently overlooked. This paper is devoted to show the morphological variation of Thalassiosira laevis, a nanoplanktonic species collected from marine coastal waters of the Province of Buenos Aires, to compare Argentinean material with those from China, Korea and Brazil described in the literature, and to record it for the first time from Argentina.

Systematic detection of BMAA (β-N-methylamino-L-alanine) and DAB (2,4-diaminobutyric acid) in mollusks collected in shellfish production areas along the French coasts ArchiMer
Reveillon, Damien; Sechet, Veronique; Hess, Philipp; Amzil, Zouher.
The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is naturally present in some microalgal species in the marine environment. The accumulation of BMAA has widely been observed in filter-feeding bivalves that are known to consume primary producers constituting the base of complex aquatic food webs. This study was performed to assess the occurrence of BMAA and isomers in mollusks collected from nine representative shellfish production areas located on the three French coasts (Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean sites). The use of a highly selective and sensitive HILIC-MS/MS method, with D5DAB as internal standard, revealed the systematic detection of BMAA and DAB, in concentrations ranging from 0.20 to 6.7 μg g-1 dry weight of digestive gland tissues of...

Production of microalgal concentrates by flocculation and their assessment as aquaculture feeds ArchiMer
Knuckey, R; Brown, M; Robert, Rene; Frampton, D.
A novel technique was developed for the flocculation of marine microalgae commonly used in aquaculture. The process entailed an adjustment of pH of culture to between 10 and 10.6 using NaOH, followed by addition of a non-ionic polymer Magnafloc LT-25 to a final concentration of 0.5 mg L−1. The ensuing flocculate was harvested, and neutralised giving a final concentration factor of between 200- and 800-fold. This process was successfully applied to harvest cells of Chaetoceros calcitrans, C. muelleri, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Attheya septentrionalis, Nitzschia closterium, Skeletonema sp., Tetraselmis suecica and Rhodomonas salina, with efficiencies ≥80%. The process was rapid, simple and inexpensive, and relatively cost neutral with...

Scanning electron microscope studies on some species of the centric diatom genera Thalassiosira and Coscinodiscus OMA
Somers, D..
By means of a scanning electron microscope, the submicroscopic structure of four Thalassiosira species and two Coscinodiscus species is studied. Five of these taxa are more or less similar in the arrangement of the areoles; the sixth one is aberrant. Besides the description of each species and the description of the submicroscopic structure of the auxospore of Thalassiosira nordenskiöldii, a classification is given of the six taxa studied.
