Hyper-production of a thermotolerant β-xylosidase by a deoxy-D-glucose and cycloheximide resistant mutant derivative of Kluyveromyces marxianus PPY 125 Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rajoka,Muhammad Ibrahim; Khan,Sana.
Production of β-xylosidaseby a cycloheximide and 2-deoxy-D-glucose-resistant mutant of Kluyveromyces marxianus PPY125 was studied when cultured on growth media containing galactose, glucose, xylose, cellobiose, sucrose and lactose as carbon sources. Xylose, cellobiose, lactose and sucrose were the key substrates. Both K. marxianus PPY125 and its mutant (M 125) supported maximum β-xylosidase specific product yield (Y P/X) following growth on xylose. Basal level of activity was observed in non-induced cultures grown on glucose. The mutant produced 1.5 to 2-fold more β-xylosidase than that produced by the wild cells. Synthesis of β-xylosidase was regulated by an induction mechanism in both wild and mutant cells. Addition of...

Removal of malachite green from water by Firmiana simplex wood fiber Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Pan,Xiangliang; Zhang,Daoyong.
This study shows that wood fiber of Phoenix tree (Firmiana simplex) is an effective adsorbent for malachite green (MG). MG sorption behavior onto the wood adsorbent was investigated in this study. Basic condition was favorable for MG adsorption to the adsorbent. The pseudo second order equation well described MG adsorption onto the wood adsorbent. The Freundlich Isotherm could describe the sorption data. The positive value of ΔH0 showed that adsorption of malachite green onto the wood adsorbent was endothermic. The negative values of ΔG at various temperatures indicate the spontaneous nature of the adsorption process.

Biosorption of lead(II) and chromium(VI) on groundnut hull: Equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamics study Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Qaiser,Suleman; Saleemi,Anwar R; Umar,Muhammad.
The biosorption of lead(II) and chromium(VI) on groundnut hull was investigated. Batch biosorption experiments were conducted to find the equilibrium time and biosorption capacity. Effect of parameters like pH, temperature and initial metal concentration was studied. The maximum biosorption capacity of lead(II) and chromium(VI) was found to be 31.54 ± 0.63 and 30.21 ± 0.74 mg g-1, respectively. The optimum pH for lead(II) and chromium(VI) removal was 5 ± 0.1 and 2 ± 0.1, respectively. The temperature change, in the range of 20 - 45ºC affected the biosorption capacity. The maximum removal of lead(II) was achieved at 20 ± 2ºC, where as maximum uptake of chromium(VI) was observed at 40 ± 2ºC. The biosorption data was fitted to the Langmuir and the Freundlich...

Relating species and community dynamics in an heavily exploited marine fish community ArchiMer
Duplisea, Daniel; Blanchard, Fabian.
We examined the dynamics of fish species and how they relate to species assemblage coherence in the heavily exploited Georges Bank fish community. Coherence is defined as reduced temporal variability of total assemblage biomass. We assumed that a higher degree of compensation hence coherence occurs within competitively coupled species assemblages; therefore, fisheries may directly alter the dynamics of certain targeted species sizes but assemblage structure will be relatively more stable owing to compensatory interactions. Species-sizes were grouped, based on negative covariance coupling in biomass time series from survey data. Assemblages representing benthic feeders were clearly identified by this method; furthermore, the most heavily exploited...

Intraseasonal variability of equatorial Indian Ocean zonal currents ArchiMer
Sengupta, Debasis; Senan, Retish; Goswami, B. N.; Vialard, Jerome.
New satellite and in situ observations show large intraseasonal (10-60 day) variability of surface winds and upper- ocean current in the equatorial Indian Ocean, particularly in the east. An ocean model forced by the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) wind stress is used to study the dynamics of the intraseasonal zonal current. The model has realistic upper- ocean currents and thermocline depth variabilities on intraseasonal to interannual scales. The quality of the simulation is directly attributed to the accuracy of the wind forcing. At the equator, moderate westerly winds are punctuated by strong 10-40-day westerly wind bursts. The wind bursts force swift, intraseasonal (20-50 day) eastward equatorial jets in spring, summer, and fall. The zonal momentum...

Análisis de cambios en los afloramientos en el Pacífico ecuatorial este, durante eventos El Niño Oscilación del Sur OceanDocs
Perugachi Salamea, C..
The ocean reanalysis Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) 2.2.4 is used to explore the changes in upwelling from normal conditions to either El Niño or La Niña conditions. Physical and thermodynamic variables from the reanalysis are used to explore the structure and behaviour of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. The results of this analysis show that sea surface temperature (SST), entrainment velocity, wind stress, mixed layer depth, wind stress curl, and heat content anomalies are in general agreement with ENSO theory. Interestingly, the distribution of upwelling based on the entrainment velocity is very patchy, which led us to explore zonal and meridional sections of vertical velocity. We used three methods to compute changes in upwelling...

Thermodynamics and Equation of State of Seawater. TEOS-10 OceanDocs
Alverson, Keith.
The 41st Executive Council of the IOC instructed the Executive Secretary to present to the Assembly, at its 25th session, the new equation of state of seawater that has been developmed by SCOR-IAPSO working group 127 and to invite the Assembly to consider adopting a resolution formally adopting this new standard. One of the implications of the new formulation is adoption of a new variable ‘Absolute Salinity’. There are substantial potential implications associated with adopting the new standard for long term continuity of records and national data centers. WG127 has recommended the adoption of Absolute Salinity to be used in journals to describe the salinity of seawater and to be used as the salinity argument to algorithms that give the various...

The marine barite saturation state of the world's oceans OMA
Monnin, C.; Jeandel, C.; Cattaldo, T.; Dehairs, F.A..
This paper addresses the question of the eventual control of barium concentration in seawater by an equilibrium with barite. For this, we have used a new thermodynamic model to compute the barite saturation index of ocean waters, mainly from GEOSECS data. Our results show that equilibrium between barite and seawater is reached in a number of places: cold surface waters of the Southern Ocean, waters at intermediate depths (2000-3500 m) in the Pacific, deep waters (2000-3500 m) of the Gulf of Bengal. The only samples for which a slight barite supersaturation is found are the surface waters at GEOSECS station G89 in the Weddell Gyre. Besides these locations, the rest of the world's oceans is undersaturated, as was established by Church and Wolgemuth [Church,...

Protein dynamics: hydration and cavities BJMBR
Heremans,K..
The temperature-pressure behavior of proteins seems to be unique among the biological macromolecules. Thermodynamic as well as kinetic data show the typical elliptical stability diagram. This may be extended by assuming that the unfolded state gives rise to volume and enthalpy-driven liquid-liquid transitions. A molecular interpretation follows from the temperature and the pressure dependence of the hydration and cavities. We suggest that positron annihilation spectroscopy can provide additional quantitative evidence for the contributions of cavities to the dynamics of proteins. Only mature amyloid fibrils that form from unfolded proteins are very resistant to pressure treatment.
