Appropriate field data are required to check the reliability of hydrodynamic models simulating the dispersion of soluble substances in the marine environment. This study deals with the collection of physical measurements and soluble tracer data intended specifically for this kind of validation. The intensity of currents as well as the complexity of topography and tides around the Cap de La Hague in the centre of the English Channel make it one of the most difficult areas to represent in terms of hydrodynamics and dispersion. Controlled releases of tritium-in the form of HTO-are carried out in this area by the AREVA-NC plant, providing an excellent soluble tracer. The Celtic Sea banks: an example of sand body analysis from very high-resolution seismic data ArchiMer

Very high-resolution seismic data from the Kaiser-I-Hind sand bank (southern Celtic Sea) recently highlighted the internal structure of the enigmatic Celtic Banks, which are among the deepest and largest shelf sand ridges. The main body of the bank is made up of 4 seismic/depositional units which reflect a transgressive evolution. New data on the detailed architecture of two of these units allow discussion of bank growth in terms of either (1) a channel–levee system preserved both by lateral migration and aggradation of the channels, or (2) a package of large offshore tidal sediment bodies (bar chains and/or giant dunes). Modeling flocculation processes : intercomparison of a size class-based model and a distribution-based model ArchiMer

Modeling suspended particulate matter (SPM) dynamics is essential to calculate sediment transport budgets and to provide relevant knowledge for the understanding of biogeochemical cycles in coastal waters. Natural flocs are characterized by their size, shape, structure and density that determine their settling velocity and therefore their vertical as well as horizontal transport. During transport, several processes, in particular aggregation and fragmentation, alter these particle properties. During the research cruise Cimar-Fiordo 2, carried out in late 1996, sea level was recorded in three stations located in channels, Messier (Puerto Edén), Wide (Punta Beresford) and Concepción (Caleta Patria). The measurements were of short term, starting in October 20th and finishing in December 13th, 1996. The sea level in those stations, was analyzed in the time and frequency dominion, and some tide non harmonic values were calculated. Results showed that tides evident influence in sea level signal, with a clear mixt semidiurnal behavior, and a daily inequality between high and low waters.
