Fluctuations d'abondance de l'ichtyoplancton sur une zone frontale cotiere (Golfe de Gascogne: Baie d'Audierne) ArchiMer
Camus, Patrick; Delpech, Jean-paul; Omnes, Marie-helene; Mastail, Max.
A two years ichthyoplankton sampling program over an eight station network on each side of a coastal tidal front was conducted twice a month during neap tides. A principal component analysis was performed on the data (taxa and observations) which were segregated during the summer into two groups of taxa related to two groups of stations belonging to two different hydrodynamical areas. In July and August 1980 during a tide cycle, zooplankton was investigated at two stations in the stratified and transitional area. Periodic fluctuations of meroplanktonic taxa correlated to the movement of the front induced by the tide were observed.

Aim To investigate some of the environmental variables underpinning the past and present distribution of an ecosystem engineer near its poleward range edge. Location >500 locations spanning >7,400 km around Ireland. Methods We collated past and present distribution records on a known climate change indicator, the reef‐forming worm Sabellaria alveolata (Linnaeus, 1767) in a biogeographic boundary region over 182 years (1836–2018). This included repeat sampling of 60 locations in the cooler 1950s and again in the warmer 2000s and 2010s. Using species distribution modelling, we identified some of the environmental drivers that likely underpin S. alveolata distribution towards the leading edge of its biogeographical range in Ireland. Results Through...

Assessing spatial and temporal variability of phytoplankton communities' composition in the Iroise Sea ecosystem (Brittany, France): A 3D modeling approach: Part 2: Linking summer mesoscale distribution of phenotypic diversity to hydrodynamism ArchiMer
Cadier, Mathilde; Sourisseau, Marc; Gorgues, Thomas; Edwards, Christopher A.; Memery, Laurent.
Tidal front ecosystems are especially dynamic environments usually characterized by high phytoplankton biomass and high primary production. However, the description of functional microbial diversity occurring in these regions remains only partially documented. In this article, we use a numerical model, simulating a large number of phytoplankton phenotypes to explore the three-dimensional spatial patterns of phytoplankton abundance and diversity in the Iroise Sea (western Brittany). Our results suggest that, in boreal summer, a seasonally marked tidal front shapes the phytoplankton species richness. A diversity maximum is found in the surface mixed layer located slightly west of the tidal front (i.e., not strictly co-localized with high biomass...

Modelling the tides and their impacts on the vertical stratification over the Sofala Bank, Mozambique ArchiMer
Chevane, C. M.; Penven, Pierrick; Nehama, F. P. J.; Reason, C. J. C..
The Sofala Bank, a wide shelf located along the central coast of Mozambique, hosts tides with high amplitudes. The Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) was used to analyse the tidal currents on the bank and to investigate their effects on the stratification and generation of tidal fronts. During spring tides, barotropic tidal currents with maximum values ranging from 40 cm s–1 to 70 cm s–1 are found on the central bank. The major axis of the tidal ellipses for M2 and S2 follow a cross-shelf direction with mainly anticlockwise rotation. Similar to observations, three distinct regimes occur: (i) a warm well-mixed region on the inner shelf where the depths are <30 m; (ii) a wellmixed colder region above the shelf edge; and (iii) a stratified region...

Etude numérique de la mer d'Iroise : dynamique, variabilité du front d'Ouessant et évaluation des échanges cross-frontaux ArchiMer
Cambon, Gildas.
This thesis was written in the framework of a realistic modelisation for the study of the Iroise Sea. The first two parts deal with its digital implementation and validation based on observation. We then focus on the analysis of the main structures and physical processes operating in the Iroise Sea: first the Ouessant tidal front and the processes associated with the connexion of surface and bottom mixing layers, then the average eulerian residual circulation for which we tried to quantify the relative part of the different processes involved. We then mapped the different dynamic regimes involved: some cyclostrophic regimes can be observed around the islands and in shallow water areas, and a geostrophic regime clearly appears, at front level, especially in...
