Application of the comet assay in erythrocytes of Oreochromis niloticus (Pisces): a methodological comparison Genet. Mol. Biol.
Christofoletti,Cintya A.; David,José Augusto O.; Fontanetti,Carmem S..
The present study applied the comet assay to erythrocytes of Oreochromis niloticus with the aim of improving protocols to detect DNA damage in these cells, by using two distinct pHs (pH = 12.1 and pH > 13) and evaluating whether there is a correspondence between silver and ethidium bromide staining. Comets were visually examined and, the frequency of cells with and without damage was obtained, as well as the distribution of classes and scores. By using the Kruskal-Wallis test, our results revealed that pH 12.1 is more effective, although both pHs can be used. Our findings also suggest that silver staining can substitute ethidium bromide, an expensive and highly toxic stain that requires specific equipment for examination.

Impact of fish cage-culture on the community structure of zooplankton in a tropical reservoir Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Dias,Juliana D; Takahashi,Érica M; Santana,Natália F; Bonecker,Cláudia C.
We investigated the impact of fish cage culture on the zooplankton community structure in a tropical reservoir. We hypothesized that community abundance is greater near cages and increases over time due to the increase in food availability. Samplings were performed near, upstream and downstream from net cages, and before and after net cage installation. The abundance of zooplankton increased 15 days after the experiment was set up, followed by a reduction and finally increased. Rotifer abundance showed significant differences among sites (p<0.05) and sampling periods (p<0.001). Significant differences were also observed in total zooplankton and cladoceran abundance (p<0.001). The spatial and temporal variation of the physical and chemical...

Tilapia production and feeding management in the semi-arid of brazil: a view of some recent developed techniques. Infoteca-e
CAMPECHE, D. F. B.; BEZERRA, R. de S.; MELO, J. F. B. de; CORREIA, E. de S..
The Semi-Arid is not one of the first climates that comes to mind when fish production is imagined. First of all, it is important to describe the semi-arid in Brazil since it enclosures 969.589,4 km2, about 11% of the Brazilian territory, and more than 1.000 municipalities in 9 different Brazilian States. In this area live over 22 million people, which is about 10% of the Brazilian total population. However the Brazilian semi-arid has some particular characteristics that made it possible. The São Francisco River and large water reservoirs such as Castanhão and Orós are some of the water bodies where tilapia culture has been sucessfull. There are several production systems adopted ranging from tilapia in irrigation reservoirs on small rural properties to...

Transcriptomic response to parasite infection in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) depends on rearing density ArchiMer
Ellison, Amy R.; Uren Webster, Tamsyn M.; Rey, Olivier; Garcia De Leaniz, Carlos; Consuegra, Sofia; Orozco-terwengel, Pablo; Cable, Jo.
Background: Captive animal populations, be it for food production or conservation programmes, are often maintained at densities far beyond those in natural environments, which can have profound effects on behaviour, immune and stress levels, and ultimately welfare. How such alterations impact transcriptional responses to pathogen infection is a 'different kettle of fish' and remains poorly understood. Here, we assessed survival and gene expression profiles of infected fish reared at two different densities to elucidate potential functional genomic mechanisms for density-related differences in disease susceptibility. Results: Utilising a whole-transcriptome sequencing (RNAseq) approach, we demonstrate that rearing density in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)...

Energy-protein management by some warmwater finfishes. ArchiMer
Luguet, P; Moreau, Y.
If warmwater finfish protein requirements as level in diet is low, absolute intake per day is similar to those of coldwater species. But relation of this requirement with specific growth rate differs for strictly warmwater fishes as Tilapias. Analysis of partition between protein and non-protein energy retention shows that these species with Clarias make a better use of non-protein energy provided and consequently improve their protein retention. Better carbohydrate digestibility and metabolism are propounded as part of the explanation.

Change of osmoregulatory and hematological parameters in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after exposure to sublethal mercury concentrations ArchiMer
Handayani, Kiki Syaputri; Soegianto, Agoes; Lignot, Jehan-hervé.
The effects of Hg exposure on blood parameters and gill physiology of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were analyzed. Fish maintained in freshwater were exposed for 7 days (d) to sublethal mercury concentrations (0.1 and 1 mg/L). Blood serum osmolality (SO), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+) and chloride (Cl−) ionic concentrations, and hematological parameters were assessed after 1 up to 7 d of exposure. Serum osmolality and ionic concentrations of exposed fish appeared differently affected throughout the experimental period compared to the controls. Osmolality was reduced at the 2 tested concentrations but Na+ and Cl− contents were only altered at 1 mg/L of Hg after 1 d of exposure and values rapidly returned to the control values thereafter. K+ content was...

Quantifying the genetic parameters of feed efficiency in juvenile Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; Vandeputte, Marc; Mekkawy, Wagdy; Chatain, Beatrice; Benzie, John A. H..
Background: Improving feed efficiency in fish is crucial at the economic, social and environmental levels with respect to developing a more sustainable aquaculture. The important contribution of genetic improvement to achieve this goal has been hampered by the lack of accurate basic information on the genetic parameters of feed efficiency in fish. We used video assessment of feed intake on individual fish reared in groups to estimate the genetic parameters of six growth traits, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake in 40 pedigreed families of the GIFT strain of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Feed intake and growth were measured on juvenile fish (22.4g mean body weight) during 13 consecutive meals, representing 7days of...

An integrated fish-plankton aquaculture system in brackish water ArchiMer
Gilles, S.; Fargier, L.; Lazzaro, X.; Baras, E.; De Wilde, Nicolas; Drakides, C.; Amiel, C.; Rispal, B.; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture takes advantage of the mutualism between some detritivorous fish and phytoplankton. The fish recycle nutrients by consuming live (and dead) algae and provide the inorganic carbon to fuel the growth of live algae. In the meanwhile, algae purify the water and generate the oxygen required by fishes. Such mechanism stabilizes the functioning of an artificially recycling ecosystem, as exemplified by combining the euryhaline tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii and the unicellular alga Chlorella sp. Feed addition in this ecosystem results in faster fish growth but also in an increase in phytoplankton biomass, which must be limited. In the prototype described here, the algal population control is exerted by herbivorous...

Analysis of the black-chinned tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii reproducing under a wide range of salinities: from RNA-seq to candidate genes ArchiMer
Avarre, Jean-christophe; Dugue, R.; Alonso, Pascal; Diombokho, A.; Joffrois, C.; Faivre, N.; Cochet, C.; Durand, Jean Dominique.
The black-chinned tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii is an ecologically appealing model as it shows exceptional adaptive capacities, especially with regard to salinity. In spite of this, this species is devoid of genomic resources, which impedes the understanding of such remarkable features. De novo assembly of transcript sequences produced by next-generation sequencing technologies offers a rapid approach to obtain expressed gene sequences for non-model organisms. It also facilitates the development of quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assays for analysing gene expression under different environmental conditions. Nevertheless, obtaining accurate and reliable qPCR results from such data requires a number of validations prior to interpretation....

Growing, losing or introducing? Cage aquaculture as a vector for the introduction of non-native fish in Furnas Reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Azevedo-Santos,Valter Monteiro de; Rigolin-Sá,Odila; Pelicice,Fernando Mayer.
Cage aquaculture has been developed in many countries, including Brazil. This form of production, although economically productive, may cause several impacts to the environment. Considering the historical relationship between aquaculture and species introduction, our study investigated the potential of cage aquaculture in spreading non-native species into hydroelectric reservoirs. We interviewed 19 fish farmers in Furnas Reservoir, Grande River basin. All producers have grown exclusively Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), an African fish, and all producers reported the occurrence of fish escapes. Releases were mainly accidental, but highly frequent during some management procedures, such as length classification, fish capture and juvenile stocking....

U.S. Import Demand for Tilapia from Selected FTAA Countries AgEcon
Ligeon, Carel; Bayard, Budry; Clark, Joy M.; Jolly, Curtis M..
Seafood consumption in the U.S. has increased over the period 1990 to 2003. A large percentage of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported. The most important seafood products imported to the U.S. are shrimp, Atlantic salmon, tilapia, catfish, crayfish, mussels and a mixture of mollusks. In 2003, the U.S. imported 199 million pounds of tilapia and tilapia products, at a value of $241.2 million, a 38% increase from the previous year. The seafood market has been considered an important foreign exchange earner for the Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM), and Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) member countries. Jamaica is the only CARICOM country that exports tilapia products from aquaculture sources to the U.S. In 2003, Jamaica exported 39,950...

MARKETS FOR NORTHERN PLAINS AQUACULTURE--CASE STUDY OF TILAPIA AgEcon
Golz, Theresa K.; Nelson, William C..
The purpose of this study is to identify and investigate alternative fresh and frozen fillet markets for tilapia within the region. The competition for this market is primarily an imported product from Asia and Central America. Total imports plus domestic production has increased from 16.95 million pounds in 1992 to 70.74 million pounds in 1997. Thirty-seven of the 79 respondents handled tilapia in their business. Thirty of these businesses handled and preferred fresh fillets while ten handled frozen tilapia. The tilapia businesses were clear in their preferences: 5 to 7 ounce fillets, quick delivery response time, constant supply, taste and size, and suppliers oriented toward customer service. Twenty-six of the 37 respondents were open to new...

Bioeconomic Evaluation of Substitution of Balanced Feed with Chaya (Cnidoscolus Chayamansa) Leaves in Tilapia Production AgEcon
Poot-Lope, Gaspar Roman; Gasca-Leyva, Eucario.
In Mexico, the culture of tilapia has developed in rural areas, where the main problem is low producer income. The state of Yucatan also experiences this situation, and scarcity of money needed to purchase inputs results in complementary feeding with chaya (Cnidoscolus chayamansa), whose leaves are edible for humans and animals. In this situation, CINVESTAV conducted experiments to determine the optimal level of substitution of balanced feed with ray chaya leaves. The test with 25% and 50% reduced balanced feed complemented with chaya (ad libitum) did not show significant differences (P>0.05) in growth compared to fishes fed with a complete ration of balanced feed (100% feed table). A bioeconomic model was developed, including a submodel of growth...
