The aim of this work was to study the effect of potassium and calcium in combination with nitrogen upon the yield and fruit quality of outdoor-grown melon (Cucumis melo L.). Two experiments were simultaneously performed through the use of two cultivars: 'Honey Dew Green Flesh' (Inodorus group) and 'Sivan' (Charentais group). A completely randomized experimental design was used with nine treatments resulting in a factorial arrangement of 3 x 3 due to the use of three doses of K and three doses of Ca. Doses were administered through fertigation with the injection of the fertilizers into a drip irrigation system, expressed as follows in relation to N: N:K (1.8:1.0 - 1.0:1.0 - 0.0:1.0) and Ca:N (2.0:1.0 - 1.0:1.0 - 0.0:1.0). Fertilization with nitrogen and... |

Dragon fruit or pitahaya (Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britton & Rose) is an exquisite and exotic fruit with attractive aroma and flavor, and a characteristic red-skinned color. Its production and supply for regional and foreign markets is limited to its storage life. The objective of this study was to evaluate physiological alterations and sensitivity to chilling injuries during postharvest of pitahaya. Fruits harvested at the Tehuacán Valley, Puebla, México, were stored at three postharvest temperatures: 3, 7, and 11 ±1 °C, for 7, 14, and 21 d and under these conditions plus a 4 d period at 22 ±1 °C. Evaluated fruits were then contrasted with fresh fruit (control 1), and non-cold stored fruits maintained 4 d at 22 °C (control 2). Variables were... |

Fruit growth is stimulated by different weather conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of weather conditions on the physicochemical properties of pineapple guava fruit growth. Twenty trees were marked in two production areas located at different altitudes (1,800 and 2,580 m.a.s.l.), and measurements were performed every 7 days from 99 and 141 days post-anthesis to harvest at altitudes of 1,800 and 2,580 m.a.s.l., respectively. The results indicate that altitude and weather conditions greatly influence the growth and development of pineapple guava fruit, and these effects are primarily manifested in the physical characteristics of the fruit. The weight and size of the fruit at harvest are directly related to the altitude of the... |

This research was conducted to study the effects of chemical and hand thinning on fruit quality of 'Gerdi' apricot. In the first year, three weeks after full bloom (AFB) branches of mature trees were sprayed with naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) at 10, 20, and 40 mg L-1, naphthalene acetamide (NAD) at 20, 40, and 80 mg L-1, ethephon at 50, 100 and 200 mg L-1, or urea at 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6%. In next year, hand thinning was performed as a separate experiment and leaf to fruit ratio (LFR) was adjusted to 10:1, 20:1 or 30:1 at pit-hardening stage of fruit development. In both years, NAA at 40 mg L-1, NAD at 80 mg L-1 and all concentrations of ethephon significantly increased fruit drop. All concentrations of urea significantly increased fruit drop in 2006, but... |

Abstract The aim of this research was compare methods for pigments extraction and color determination in different tomato for processing cultivars, and choose the most promising materials for the industry. The tomatoes for processing studied were of the IT761, H9992, H9553, AP533, Advance, N901, BRSena, U2006, HY26, HY37 and HY68 cultivars. The extraction yields of lycopene and β-carotene using acetone and the mixture of ethanol, acetone and hexane (10:10:20) were determined, and the parameters of color were determined by colorimetric and digitals image methods (Cielab and Hunterlab), besides other physicochemical characteristics. The mixture of solvents is more efficient in the extraction of lycopene and β-carotene than acetone on its own. The methods of... |

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of macronutrient and boron deficiencies on physico-chemical characteristics of pineapple fruits, ‘Vitoria’ cultivar. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with eight treatments (complete solution, -N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg, -S and -B) and six replicates. The experiment was conducted from October 2016 to March 2018, and the variables evaluated were: fresh fruit and crown mass, fruit diameter, fruit and crown length, juice volume and mass, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids (SS), vitamin C, juice pH and SS/TA ratio. All treatments with nutrient deficiency reduced the fresh fruit mass. In treatments -N and -Ca there was a reduction of 41.9 and 35.3%, respectively, in the... |

Abstract The aim of this study was to characterize the quality of peach fruits Jarillo cv., produced under the conditions of altitude tropical climate in three locations: Pamplona, Chitagá and Pamplonita, in Northern Santander, Colombia. Ten trees were sampled by the conditioned latin hypercube method and eight growing fruits with physiological state of maturity were selected. By means of a profile analysis, the hypotheses of parallelism, coincidence and horizontality of quality variables in the complete measurement interval were tested, and in some segments of the interval, some patterns from the graphic point of view were found. A radial diagram was made to study the development of fruit color at each thermal level. When the quotient between... |

ABSTRACT The number of sweet corn cultivars adapted to the climatic conditions and with agronomic traits recommended to the Brazilian market is still limited. Thus, the aim was to investigate the general and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA, respectively) in relation to the grain yield (GY) and total soluble solid (TSS) contents of seven lines of sweet corn (su1) and eight lines of supersweet corn (sh2) by diallel crosses. For TSS, the inbred lines SC6 and SC7 of sweet corn, and SSC7 and SSC8 of supersweet corn showed higher GCA effect. For GY, the inbred lines SC1 and SC2 of sweet corn and SSC4 and SSC6 of supersweet corn showed higher GCA effect. For TSS in sweet corn, the hybrids '4 × 6' and '1 × 7' showed the superior Ŝij estimates across all... |
