EFEITOS DE CURTO E LONGO PRAZOS DE CHOQUES NA TAXA DE CÂMBIO REAL SOBRE O SALDO DA BALANÇA COMERCIAL AGROPECUÁRIA BRASILEIRA AgEcon
Scalco, Paulo Roberto; Carvalho, Henrique Duarte; Campos, Antonio Carvalho.
Entretanto,...

Franca, Lidiane Da Silva; Silva, Etevaldo Almeida.
Global Growth, Macroeconomic Change, and U.S. Agricultural Trade AgEcon
Gehlhar, Mark J.; Dohlman, Erik; Brooks, Nora L.; Jerardo, Alberto; Vollrath, Thomas L..
After a decade of uneven export growth and rapidly growing imports, U.S. agriculture has begun to reassert its position in global trade markets. Rising exports and signs of moderating demand for imports mark a departure from previous trends. This report places past trends and emerging developments in perspective by spotlighting the role of two specific factors that help steer U.S. agricultural trade patterns: global growth and shifts in foreign economic activity that affect U.S. exports, and macroeconomic factors underlying the growth of U.S. imports. Consistent with actual changes in the level and destination of U.S. exports, model simulations corroborate the contention that renewed export growth can be sustained by expanding incomes and growing food...

Determinants of the U.S. Trade Balance in Consumer-Oriented Agricultural Products AgEcon
Zhuang, Renan; Koo, Won W.; Mattson, Jeremy W..
This study investigates the factors behind the growing U.S. trade deficit in consumer-oriented agricultural and food products by using reliable panel data and an empirical trade model derived from international trade theory. The results indicate that per capita income in the United States appears to be the most important determinant for the growing U.S. trade deficit. Increases in per capita income and trade liberalization in foreign countries improve the U.S. trade balance. U.S. foreign direct investment abroad in food processing, a strong U.S. dollar, and NAFTA are found to have negative effects on the U.S. trade balance.

Hope and reality: EU accession’s impact on Hungarian agri-food trade AgEcon
Kiss, Judit.
The principal aim of this article is to examine how Hungary’s agricultural trade has changed since EU accession and whether the country has managed to retain its position as a net exporter. After analysing the Eurostat database’s latest statistical data we concluded that Hungary’s agri-food trade position has deteriorated regarding both old and new EU member states. The central causes for this are not so much insufficient exports but rather a sharp rise in imports. Future prospects hinge on further EU enlargement, changes in the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, the outcome of the WTO Doha Round, and trends in world agriculture. To adapt to expected changes and to capitalise on emerging opportunities, Hungary should alter its agricultural export commodity...

Analysis of the Relationship between State Budget and Trade Balance of Libyan Economy (Period: 2000 – 2008) AgEcon
Maitah, Mansoor; der Ali, A..
The subject of the relationship between state budget and trade balance is important as economic subject, not only at the level of developing countries, but also at of advanced ones, too. Such importance emerged clearly when 1980s witnessed in United States of America a deficit in both state budget and trade balance, which was called at that time as the twin or dual deficit. We can say that the analysis of relationship between state budget and trade balance states the extent of mutual effect between financial and trade policies of any economy, namely; any change in the outcome of either one may affect the other in the same degree. To put in other words, the instruments of financial policy represented by total incomes and total expenditures can affect the...

Income Effects on the Trade Balance in the United States: Analysis by Sector AgEcon
Miljkovic, Dragan; Paul, Rodney.
This study examines the causes of the countercyclicality of the trade balance in the three major sectors of the U.S. economy: services, manufacturing, and agriculture. These results are compared with the results pertinent to the U.S. economy as a whole. At the macroscopic level, Sachs’ hypothesis seems to explain the countercyclicality of the trade balance, while results are mixed across individual sectors. The services sector may be explained by Sachs’ hypothesis, while results for the manufacturing sector are more consistent with the real business cycle hypothesis. The results for the agricultural sector, however, cannot be explained by either hypothesis.

A snapshot of Western Balkan’s agriculture from the perspective of EU accession AgEcon
Mizik, Tamas.
The Western Balkan countries can be characterised by their shared goal, which is rapid accession to the EU. Agriculture is an important element to achieving this goal. The role of agriculture differs widely among the analysed countries but is more important than the average of the EU. This study gives a comprehensive overview of the most important agricultural indicators. These indicators give a precise picture of the sector’s relevance, production structure, efficiency and international relations. After demonstrating changes in input use, production structure, prices and agricultural policies, the next section identifies some of its reasons. The analysis concentrates on the newest available data. Serbia is the leading producer and the only net exporter of...

Relationship Between Trade Liberalisation, Economic Growth and Trade Balance: An Econometric Investigation AgEcon
Parikh, Ashok; Stirbu, Corneliu.
This is a study of 42 developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America in which we first examine the impact of trade liberalisation on economic growth, investment share of GDP, openness, trade balance and current accounts (as percentages of GDP). Both panel data and country by country data are used to measure the impact of liberalisation on domestic economic growth measured in PPP terms from the data available in Heston, Summers and Aten (2001) study. Domestic economic growth is often positively related to liberalisation for many countries of our sample. Next we analyse the impact of growth on trade balance and current account to examine whether higher economic growth due to liberalisation leads to adverse effect on balance of trade. Trade balance is...
