Sugarcane is an economically important crop that is used for the production of fuel ethanol. Diazotrophic bacteria have been isolated from sugarcane tissues, without causing visible plant anatomical changes or disease symptoms. These bacteria can be beneficial to the plant by promoting root growth and an increase in plant yield. Different rates of Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) were observed in different genotypes. The discovery of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) is changed our understanding of genome, transcriptome, and interactions with proteome in a cell. Since the discovery of the first microRNA (miRNA) called lin-4 on Caenorhabditis elegans in 1993, our understanding of gene expression has deepened. Further miRNA discoveries have led to the investigation of new ncRNA families and their function, biogenesis, and interactions with other types of molecules. Recent developments in bioinformatics, public databases, sequencing technologies, and biochemical techniques have increased our understanding of the biogenesis, function, and interactions of ncRNAs. This book provides an overview of current ncRNA research dealing with human diseases and cancer and plant miRNAs.

Banana (Musa spp.), which is one of the world's most popular and most traded fruits, is highly susceptible to pests and diseases. Pseudocercospora musae, responsible for Sigatoka leaf spot disease, is a principal fungal pathogen of Musa spp., resulting in serious economic damage to cultivars in the Cavendish subgroup. The aim of this study was to characterize genetic components of the early immune response to P. musae in Musa acuminata subsp. burmannicoides, var. Calcutta 4, a resistant wild diploid. Abstract: Humicola grisea var. thermoidea is a thermophilic ascomycete and important enzyme producer that has an efficient enzymatic system with a broad spectrum of thermostable carbohydrate-active (CAZy) enzymes. These enzymes can be employed in lignocellulose biomass deconstruction and other industrial applications. In this work, the genome of H. grisea var. thermoidea was sequenced. The acquired sequence reads were assembled into a total length of 28.75 Mbp. Genome features correlate with what was expected for thermophilic Sordariomycetes. O uso do amendoim forrageiro em consórcios com gramíneas nas pastagens e como cobertura verde, consorciado com culturas comerciais, tem crescido nos últimos anos. A análise do genoma funcional permite a identificação de genes de interesse agronômico. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar a anotação funcional de genes do transcriptoma de folhas de Arachis pintoi. White striping (WS) is a myopathy characterized by the appearance of white stripes parallel to the muscle fibers in the breast of broiler chickens, composed of adipose and connective tissues. This condition causes economic losses and, although common, its etiology remains poorly understood. Hence, the objective was to identify genes and biological mechanisms involved in the early stages of WS using a paternal broiler line that grows slightly slower than commercial ones, at 35 days of age, through the RNA sequencing of the pectoralis major muscle. Thirty genes were differentially expressed between normal and WS-affected chickens, with 23 upregulated and 7 downregulated in the affected broilers. The success of cattle tick fixation largely depends on the secretion of substances that alter the immune response of the host. The majority of these substances are expressed by the parasite salivary gland and secreted in tick saliva. New sequencing technologies brought deep probing of transcriptomes (so-called RNAseq) to the reach of individual researches. Analysis of RNAseq sequences, however, depend on the alignment of reads to a reference genome. Some approaches have been proposed to allow de novo assembly of the transcripts, therefore allowing RNAseq to be used on organisms lacking a reference genome. The efficiency of those approaches, however, were tested only with diploid species. Here we propose a methodology to evaluate the results of de novo assembly of allotetraploid Coffea arabica RNAseq reads obtained from libraries of coffee leaves infected by Hemileia vastatrix. Drought is one of the abiotic stresses that most affect plant growth and productivity. Grasses of the genus Paspalum are successfully used as turf and forage in Australia, Argentina, Brazil and United States. Paspalum notatum has good forage quality, and P. vaginatum, high tolerance to salinity. In addition, their potential to tolerate drought has been described previously, making them interesting for transcriptome studies under water deficit. The objective of this work was to analyze the gene expression profiles of both species in response to drought.

The root-knot nematode (RKN), Meloidogyne incognita, is a devastating soybean pathogen worldwide. The use of resistant cultivars is the most effective method to prevent economic losses caused by RKNs. To elucidate the mechanisms involved in resistance to RKN, we determined the proteome and transcriptome profiles from roots of susceptible (BRS133) and highly tolerant (PI595099) Glycine max genotypes 4, 12, and 30 days after RKN infestation.
