PRODUCTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF BIOFUEL PRODUCTION FROM EGUSI (CITRULLUS LANATUS) VEGETABLE OIL CIGR Journal
I., Manta H.; D., James D.; I., Awu J..
Green house effect and ozone layer depletion due continuous environmental pollution from fossil fuel has speed up the quest for search of alternative energy fuel. In recent year, biofouls has attracted much attention as a reliable substitute to fossil fuel. The objective of this study was to evaluate and characterize biofuel produced from Egusi vegetable oil by applying standard method of transesterification. This study was carried out at Processing and Storage Engineering Departmental (PSED) laboratory of National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM), Ilorin Kwara State, Nigeria. The results of the proximate characterization of the produced Egusi vegetable oil shows crude protein, crude fibre, ether extract, moisture content, ash content and...

Selected Fuel Properties of Biodiesel Produced from Shea Butter and Palm Kernel Oil CIGR Journal
Adesoji, Ogunlade Clement; Simeon, Jekayinfa Olayinka; B., Olaniyi A..
Tranesterification reaction was carried out on raw Shea Butter Oil (SBO) and Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) to separate the ester from glycerol using ethanol in the presence of potassium hydroxide as catalyst. The properties of biodiesel (ethyl ester) obtained from varying proportions of diesel were experimentally determined and compared with that of conventional diesel. The fatty acid profile of the oil samples were determined using standard methods. Four blends (10, 20, 25 and 30%) of SBO and PKO by volume with diesel oil were produced and fuel properties determined include viscosity, relative density, specific gravity, flash, cloud and pour points. Mean values of the six fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic) obtained for shea butter and palm kernel...

Waste shells of Chicken and Guinea fowl eggs as catalysts for the production biodiesel CIGR Journal
Oyelaran, Olatunde Ajani.
Raw material costs are responsible for the greater percentage of biodiesel production cost. In this research chicken and guinea fowl wastes eggshell were used as feedstock for the producing heterogeneous catalyst for production of biodiesel. Proceeding their utilization, calcium oxide (CaO) was obtained by calcining the eggshells which contains calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in a muffle furnace at of 1000 for four hours. The solid oxide catalyst produced were then characterized by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and XRF methods. The activity of the produced catalyst in transesterification of calabash seed oil with methanol was assessed, and the properties of biodiesel obtained were evaluated. The various effect of reaction time, reaction temperature,...

Recent developments in microbial oils production: a possible alternative to vegetable oils for biodiesel without competition with human food? BABT
Christophe,Gwendoline; Kumar,Vinod; Nouaille,Régis; Gaudet,Geneviève; Fontanille,Pierre; Pandey,Ashok; Soccol,Carlos Ricardo; Larroche,Christian.
Since centuries vegetable oils are consumed as human food but it also finds applications in biodiesel production which is attracting more attention. But due to being in competition with food it could not be sustainable and leads the need to search for alternative. Nowdays microbes-derived oils (single cell oils) seem to be alternatives for biodiesel production due to their similar composition to that of vegetable oils. However, the cold flow properties of the biodiesel produced from microbial oils are unacceptable and have to be modified by an efficient transesterification. Glycerol which is by product of transesterification can be valorised into some more useful products so that it can also be utilised along with biodiesel to simplify the downstream...

Appliance of a high pressure semi-batch reactor: supercritical transesterification of soybean oil using methanol Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
COSTA,Wanessa Almeida da; BEZERRA,Fernanda Wariss Figueiredo; OLIVEIRA,Mozaniel Santana de; SILVA,Marcilene Paiva da; CUNHA,Vânia Maria Borges; ANDRADE,Eloisa Helena de Aguiar; CARVALHO JÚNIOR,Raul Nunes de.
Abstract This work presents the results of a supercritical transesterification process of soybean oil using methanol, performed in a laboratory high pressure semi-batch reactor. A full description of the equipment and a standard operating procedure are also provided. Since fossil fuels are not renewable, biofuels such biodiesel, have gained attention over the past decades. Biodiesel is the result of the transesterification of triacylglycerols in vegetable oils or animal fats and it works as an alternative fuel for compression-ignition engines. Methanol was chosen to perform the reaction, at molar ratios of 1:24 (oil: alcohol) and 0.1 (CO 2:methanol), temperature of 280 °C and pressure of 130 bar. In order to decrease the reaction time, CO2 in the...

Oxidative stability of biodiesel from soybean oil fatty acid ethyl esters Scientia Agricola
Ferrari,Roseli Ap.; Oliveira,Vanessa da Silva; Scabio,Ardalla.
Biodiesel consists of long-chain fatty acid esters, derived from renewable sources such as vegetable oils, and its utilization is associated to the substitution of the diesel oil in engines. Depending on the raw material, biodiesel can contain more or less unsaturated fatty acids in its composition, which are susceptible to oxidation reactions accelerated by exposition to oxygen and high temperatures, being able to change into polymerized compounds. The objective of this work was to determine the oxidative stability of biodiesel produced by ethanolysis of neutralized, refined, soybean frying oil waste, and partially hydrogenated soybean frying oil waste. The evaluation was conducted by means of the Rancimat® equipment, at temperatures of 100 and 105ºC,...
