International Program of Standardised Trawl Surveys ArchiMer

The IPROSTS project had two main objective : - Completionn of research vessel surveys in the autumn of 1999 and 2000 in ICES areas VI, VII and VIII in order to provide abundance indices at age for the major commercial species exploited in these areas, - Standardisation of the methodology used in bottom trawl surveys. For completion of the first objective, the French Research institute IFREMER conducted surveys in the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscay on board the Research Vessel, Thalassa. The Marine Institute of Dublin conducted surveys in the Irish Sea and Celtic Sea on board the Research Vessel Celtic Voyager and in the Western area of Ireland on board two chartered commercial fishing vessels (Marliona and Shauna Ann). Stability of spatial structures of demersal assemblages: a multitable approach ArchiMer

The present work is based on a set of bottom trawl surveys performed in the Gulf of Lions between 1983 and 1992. A new method which couples the STATIS multitable approach with the logic of correspondence analysis (CoA) is proposed to study the stability of spatial organization of demersal assemblages in terms of species composition. This CoA version of STATIS has provided a clear representation of the stable part of the spatial structure of the assemblages. In addition, it gave an insight into the interannual variations of the distribution of each population around the reference structure. The seafloor covers some 70% of the Earth's surface and has been recognized as a major sink for marine litter. Still, litter on the seafloor is the least investigated fraction of marine litter, which is not surprising as most of it lies in the deep sea, i.e. the least explored ecosystem. Although marine litter is considered a major threat for the oceans, monitoring frameworks are still being set up. This paper reviews current knowledge and methods, identifies existing needs, and points to future developments that are required to address the estimation of seafloor macrolitter. Spatio-temporal organization patterns of demersal assemblages of the east coast of Corsica (Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer

The paper deals with the spatio-temporal organization patterns demersal assemblages along the east coast of Corsica. We analysed data collected by the first standardized experimental bottom trawl surveys performed in this region from 1994 to 1999 (MEDITS programme). The use of a multiway table method (STATIS-CoA) showed that the spatial organization pattern of the demersal assemblages of eastern Corsica was highly stable during the period studied. This pattern was structured around three bathymetric areas (i) the continental shelf (between 50 to 200 m depth), (ii) the upper slope (from 200 to 500 m) and (iii) the deeper slope (from 500 to 800 m), but it did not show any heterogeneity in relation with latitude.
