The quest for an appropriate system of management for tropical ecosystems necessitates that ecologists consider the accumulated experiences of indigenous peoples in their long-term management of local resources, a subject of current ethnoecology. This paper provides data and empirical evidence of an indigenous multiple-use strategy (MUS) of tropical forest management existing in Mexico, that can be considered a case of adaptive management. This conclusion is based on the observation that some indigenous communities avoid common modernization routes toward specialized, unsustainable, and ecologically disruptive systems of production, and yet probably achieve the most successful tropical forest utilization design, in terms of biodiversity conservation,... |

Since the completion of the Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) in 1995, the integration of GPS and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology has expanded to a great number of ecological and conservation applications. In tropical rain forest ecology, however, the technology has remained relatively neglected, despite its great potential. Notwithstanding cost, this is principally due to (1) the difficulty of quality satellite reception beneath a dense forest canopy, and (2) a degree of spatial error unacceptable to fine-scale vegetation mapping. Here, we report on the technical use of GPS/GIS in the rain forest of Kibale National Park, Uganda, and the methodology necessary to acquire high-accuracy spatial measurements. We conclude that the... |

Study for find out the short-term dynamics of applied fertilizer. In a soil pit a data logger system connected to tensiometers and TDR was installed up to a depth of 3.5m under pueraria in an agroforestry system (cupuacu, peach palm, Brazil nut, urucum). After a rainfall event, the soil water suction at 0.1m depth increased immediately, and fast responses were seen even up to a depth of 0.9m. This result may indicate that nutrients may be leached very fast even in these soil with high clay contents. The N concentrations in the soil solution relevantly increased at 0.1m depth during the same time period, as shown for peach palm. First, the ammonium concentrations increased, but nitrate contents followed rapidly indicanting a fast nitrification in the... |

During the first phase of the project (january 1, 1995 until april 30, 1998), the influence of the water and element supply of tree different plantation systems on the growth and wood formation of eight native tree species (Swietenia macrophylla, Carapa guianensis, Cedrela odorata, Dipterex odorata, Hymenaea courbaril, Ceiba pentandra, Virola surinamensis, Tabebuia heptaphylla) was investigated. In 1998, the data were analyzed. The results subsequently served as a basis for the second phase of the project (comp. chapter 5) which should give deeper insight into the relationship between exogenous and endogenous input, the plant metabolism, and the wood formation and wood quality of plantation-grown trees. due to the results obtained in these studies in the... |
