Sperm ultrastructure and spermatogenesis in the lizard, Tropidurus itambere Biocell
Ferreira,Adelina; Dolder,Heidi.
Spermatogenesis, with emphasis on spermiogenesis, is described for the lizard, Tropidurus itambere, using light microscopy, phase contrast and epifluorescence, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Cellular differentiation involves events of chromatin condensation, nuclear elongation and the formation of structural complexes, such as the acrosomal and axonemal ones. Other new characteristics, exclusive for this species, include various aspects of the subacrosomal granule, the insertion of the pro-acrosomal vesicle and the development of these structures to participate in the acrosomal complex. Radial projections occur just above the nuclear shoulders, which have been recognized already from the beginning of cellular elongation. The...

Variation in the diet of the lizard Tropidurus torquatus along its coastal range in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Siqueira,Carla Costa; Kiefer,Mara Cíntia; Sluys,Monique Van; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
The diet composition of lizards of a given species may vary among different populations. The feeding ecology of the tropidurid lizard Tropidurus torquatus was studied in 10 coastal areas in Brazil in order to detect to what extent the diet varies along its geographic range. A non-metric multidimensional scaling technique revealed three groups of localities according to the diet composition: one characterized by a relatively high consumption of Isoptera, one characterized by a relatively high proportion of plant matter, and one in which there was a great importance of Formicidae. We found a weak pattern of latitudinal differences in restingas regarding the general consumption of items by T. torquatus, probably because this is a generalist and opportunistic...

Dangerous neighborhood: saurophagy between syntopic Tropidurus lizards Biota Neotropica
Passos,Daniel Cunha; Monteiro,Felipe Augusto Correia; Nogueira,Carlos Henrique de Oliveira.
Saurophagy constitutes an important source of mortality among lizards and has been reported for the genus Tropidurus. However, the extension of this behavior remains unknown. Herein, we record the predation of T. jaguaribanus by its congener T. hispidus. This is the first report of saurophagy among different species of syntopicTropidurus. Furthermore, whereas published records of saurophagy tend to be directed against juveniles, this case involved two adult individuals.

ANALISIS OSTEOLOGICO EN DOS ESPECIES DE MICROLOPHUS (SAURIA, TROPIDURIDAE) DE LA COSTA CHILENO-PERUANA Gayana
Vidal,Marcela A.; Ortiz,Juan Carlos.

Structure of claws and toes of two tropidurid lizard species of Restinga from Southeastern Brazil: adaptations to the vertical use of the habitat RChHN
Carvalho Ribas,Sueli; Velloso,Ana Lucia Rosario; Teixeira-Filho,Pedro; Rocha-Barbosa,Oscar; Evangelista,Heitor; Alves dos Santos,Elaine.
Tropidurus torquatus and Liolaemus lutzae, found in a restinga habitat, show some morphological differences associated with differential microhabitats use. There were made measurements of the snout-vent length, length and width of the largest toe of hand and foot, and length, width, height and curvature of the claws. We counted the number of adhesive lamellae of the largest toe of each member. T. torquatus has larger toes, greater number of adhesive lamellae and higher and more curve claws than L. lutzae. No significant differences in toe and claw widths were found. These results suggest that the differences found in the morphology of toes and claws of these two species would be associated with the differential microhabitat use. T. torquatus has...

Sexual and age differences in ecological variables of the lizard Microlophus atacamensis (Tropiduridae) from northern Chile RChHN
VIDAL,MARCELA; ORTIZ,JUAN CARLOS; LABRA,ANTONIETA.
Microlophus is a lizard genus of South-America which has many species with sexual size dimorphism. An ecological study was performed on M. atacamensis, a species inhabiting the intertidal zone of the coast of northern Chile. The following questions were addressed: (1) does M. atacamensis exhibit sexual dimorphism? (2) do individuals of different age and sex segregate spatially? (3) do individuals of different age and sex use different type of microhabitat? and (4) do individuals of different sexes exhibit differences in thermoregulatory characteristics? The study was conducted in different localities from northern Chile, which include two types of rocky systems used by this species, a high and a low type. At the moment of lizard capture, type of...

Ritmo de atividade de Liolaemus Occipitalis boulenger (Sauria, Tropiduridae) na praia de Quintão, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Verrastro,Laura; Bujes,Clóvis Souza.
The activity rhythm of the lizard Liolaemus occipitalis Boulenger, 1885 was studied during the summer of 93 at the sand dunes of the Quintão beach, from 06:00-18:00h. During sunny days this lizard exhibited two peaks of activity (1000-1200h and 1400-1600h), and in the cloudy days it exhibited one peak of activity (1200-1400h). The number of burrows was observed and the different soil temperatures was compared with the rhythm of activity exhibited by the lizards. Rhythm of activity is determined mainly by soil surface temperatures.

Ciclo reprodutivo de machos de Liolaemus occipitalis Boulenger (Sauria, Tropiduridae) Zoologia
Verrastro,Laura; Krause,Lígia.
The aim of this work is to describe the reprodutive cycle of the males of L. occipitalis from the coastal sand-dunes of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. It was carried out between April/86 and March/88, at Jardim Atlântico Beach, Tramandaí, Rio Grande do Sul. These lizards showed reprodutive activity between September and December, with a retreat period during January and February. The seasonality of the reprodutive cycle became fully evident by the monthly variation of the testicular mass, showing an inverse relation with the temperature along the year.
