Effects of culture filtrates of endophytic fungi obtained from Piper aduncum L. on the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Lima,Alita Moura de; Salem,Júlia Ignez; Souza,João Vicente Braga de; Cortez,Ana Claudia Alves; Carvalho,Clarice Maia; Chaves,Francisco Célio Maia; Veiga Junior,Valdir Florêncio da.
Substances that inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis could potentially be used as antibiotics. These substances could also be added to test culture media to improve the speed of tuberculosis diagnosis. The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of culture filtrates of endophytic fungi isolated from P. aduncum L. on the growth of M. tuberculosis. To achieve this objective, the following methodology was used: a) endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves and stems of P. aduncum L.; b) the isolated fungi were submitted to submerged bioprocessing; c) culture filtrates from the bioprocess were assayed to evaluate their effect on the growth of M. tuberculosis. We isolated 315 fungal types, which represented 85 morphologies, from...

A two-step strategy for the complementation of M: tuberculosis mutants Genet. Mol. Biol.
Movahedzadeh,Farahnaz; Frita,Rosangela; Gutka,Hiten J..
The sequence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, completed in 1998, facilitated both the development of genomic tools, and the creation of a number of mycobacterial mutants. These mutants have a wide range of phenotypes, from attenuated to hypervirulent strains. These phenotypes must be confirmed, to rule out possible secondary mutations that may arise during the generation of mutant strains. This may occur during the amplification of target genes or during the generation of the mutation, thus constructing a complementation strain, which expresses the wild-type copy of the gene in the mutant strain, becomes necessary. In this study we have introduced a two-step strategy to construct complementation strains using the Ag85 promoter. We have constitutively...

Tuberculosis Intestinal Secundaria: Hallazgos Morfológicos en un Caso con Desenlace Fatal International Journal of Morphology
Tapia E,Oscar.

Morphometric Analysis of Granulomas Induced by Mycobacterium bovis Suggests an Influence of IFN-Gamma on the Generation and Modulation upon Granulomatous Inflammatory Response in the Different Tissues International Journal of Morphology
Azevedo Duarte,Tonya; Almeida Barbosa Jr.,Aryon de; Arruda,Sergio.
There is evidence in both human and experimental infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, that immunologic factors influence susceptibility to infection and the progress of the disease. The present study aims to evaluate the role of IFN- g upon inflammatory granulomatous response against M. bovis. To pursue that, C57BL/6 mice lacking the genes for synthesis of IFN- g (IFN- g-/-) and their wild-type counterparts (IFN- g+/+) were intravenously inoculated with M. bovis. The ability of M. bovis to survive and replicate in the liver and lungs was evaluated by counting colony-forming unit (CFU). The histopathological features of granulomatous inflammatory response in the liver and lungs were analyzed during the infection by M. bovis. Granuloma parameters...

Respuesta a la prueba tuberculínica comparativa en ovinos de establecimientos mixtos de la región norte de la provincia de La Pampa InVet
Castillo,M.; Gómez,M.B.; Cerutti,D.A.; Meglia,G.E..

Schneider,M; Magnano,G; Bergamo,E; Urbani,C; Herrera,P; Quiroga,A; Macías,A; Meikle,V; Cataldi,A; Giraudo,J.

Lepromatous leprosy and perianal tuberculosis: a case report and literature review J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Parise-Fortes,Maria Rita; Lastória,Joel Carlos; Marques,Silvio Alencar; Putinatti,Maria Stella Ayres; Stolf,Hamilton Ometto; Marques,Mariângela Ester Alencar; Haddad,Vidal.
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, a microorganism that usually affects skin and nerves. Although it is usually well-controlled by multidrug therapy (MDT), the disease may be aggravated by acute inflammatory reaction episodes that cause permanent tissue damage particularly to peripheral nerves. Tuberculosis is predominantly a disease of the lungs; however, it may spread to other organs and cause an extrapulmonary infection. Both mycobacterial infections are endemic in developing countries including Brazil, and cases of coinfection have been reported in the last decade. Nevertheless, simultaneous occurrence of perianal cutaneous tuberculosis and erythema nodosum leprosum is very rare, even in countries where both...

Trends in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Dias-Baptista,I. M. F.; Usó,S. M. R. S.; Marcondes-Machado,J..
Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is an increasing global problem. The extent and burden of MDR-TB varies significantly from country to country and region to region. Globally, about three per cent of all newly diagnosed patients have MDR-TB and the proportion is higher in patients who had previously received anti-tuberculosis (anti-TB) treatment reflecting the failure of programs designed to ensure complete cure of patients with tuberculosis. The management of MDR-TB is a challenge that should be undertaken by experienced clinicians at centers equipped with reliable laboratory services and implementation of DOTS-Plus strategy.

Cellular profile of mares colostrum: a preliminary study MV&Z
Simon, Bruna Busianov Zaharov; Roncati, Neimar Vanderlei; Hoge, Alma Yasodhara Alexandra; Porto, Ana Carolina Rusca Correa.
There are few reports on which leukocytes are present in the colostrum and milk of mares. Recent studies in farm animals suggest a role for colostral leukocytes in the transfer of passive immunity from dam to neonate. The aim of this study was to characterize the population of leukocytes presentin colostrum from clinically healthy mares, using the light microscopy. Colostrum samples were collected from 20 mares,12 Mangalarga Marchador and 8 Quarter Horse. Macrophages were the predominant cell type in most samples studied followed by neutrophils and lymphocytes. These results may be a starting point for future studies investigating the role of colostral leukocytes in the transfer of immunity from mare to foal.

LAY USE OF AMAZONIAN PLANTS FOR THE TREATMENT OF TUBERCULOSIS Acta Amazonica
STOREY,Christine; SALEM,Júlia Ignez.
The Brazilian State of Amazonas has a high incidence of Tuberculosis, 91.4 in 10,000 habitants (SESAU, 1994) and resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are frequently being found in the region (SALEM et.al, 1990). These problems have been associated with side effects caused by the antibiotics used to treat Tuberculosis, which have in rum been associated with treatment non-compliance (PATTISAPU, 1984). To resolve this problem a cost effective alternative treatment for Tuberculosis with few or no side effects, needs to be found. Amazonas has an abundance of plants, many of which are used by the lay population for medicinal purposes. A survey was carried out in five towns of the region, interviewing patients receiving treatment for Tuberculosis, to...

PKO: alternative method for isolating mycobacteria from sputum Acta Amazonica
Salem,Julia Ignez; Carvalho,Clarice Maia; Ogusku,Mauricio Morishi; Maia,Rosália; Ruffino-Netto,Antonio.
We elaborated an alternative culture method, which we denominated PKO (initials in tribute of respect to Petroff, Kudoh and Ogawa), for isolating Mycobacterium tuberculosis from sputum for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), and to compare its performance with the Swab and Petroff methods. For the technique validation, sputum samples from patients suspected of pulmonary TB cases were examined by acid-fast microscopy (direct and concentrated smear), PKO, Swab and Petroff methods. We found that Petroff and PKO methods have parity in the effectiveness of M. tuberculosis isolation. However, by the PKO method, 65% of isolated strains were detected in a period of £15 days, while by the Petroff method the best detection...

The re-emergency and persistence of vaccine preventable diseases Anais da ABC (AABC)
BORBA,RODRIGO C.N.; VIDAL,VINÍCIUS M.; MOREIRA,LILIAN O..
The introduction of vaccination worldwide dramatically reduced the incidence of pathogenic bacterial and viral diseases. Despite the highly successful vaccination strategies, the number of cases among vaccine preventable diseases has increased in the last decade and several of those diseases are still endemic in different countries. Here we discuss some epidemiological aspects and possible arguments that may explain why ancient diseases such as, measles, polio, pertussis, diphtheria and tuberculosis are still with us.
