Characterization of potato genotypes for resistance to Diabrotica speciosa Horticultura Brasileira
Teodoro,Jefferson S; Martins,José FS; Rosa,Ana PSA; Castro,Caroline M; Cunha,Uemerson S.
The potato a crop is attacked by many pests, among which the Diabrotica speciosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is considered the main one. Because of chemical control failures associated with the requirements of integrated potato production (IPP) requiring sustainable measures, aimed to characterize advanced clones breeding program of Embrapa for resistance to insect infestation in artificial conditions. Tests were performed in a greenhouse without choice of plants and tubers of four clones of Embrapa (C2337-06-02, C2337-18-02, C2342-1-02, C2362-02-02), a standard-resistant clone (NYL 235-4) and a susceptible standard cultivar (Asterix). Results of susceptibility of 'Asterix' and resistance of 'NYL 235-4' and 'C2342-1-02', both in shoots and in tubers,...

Yam: a neglected and underutilized crop in Brazil Horticultura Brasileira
Siqueira,MVBM.
In Brazil current studies and investments on yams are incipient. Similarly, the literature in recent decades lacks adequate information on this group of plants. The existing literature, on its turn, requires more than ever to be revised and organized. Yams have joined the so-called "neglected" group of crops for several reasons, but particularly because they are associated with poor and traditional communities. Many vegetables introduced in Brazil during the colonization period have adapted to different cropping systems, yams being an excellent example. This diversity resulted very widespread, yet poorly recognized in the country. In turn, the gardens using traditional farming systems continue to maintain and enhance yam local varieties. Studies from other...

Potato crop growth as affected by nitrogen and plant density PAB
OLIVEIRA,CARLOS ALBERTO DA SILVA.
Growth and development variables and dry matter characteristics were studied for cultivar Snowden of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) to evaluate nitrogen and plant density influence. Disregarding ending of season plant stress, the average number of actives haulms per plant was five and it was not affected by plant spacing. However, seasonal and final number of active haulms per plant were increased at 200 kg/ha of nitrogen. Maximum stem elongation was reached quickly with double density and had the tendency to keep constant at the highest and lowest nitrogen levels after 70 days after planting. Specific stem mass defined as mass per unit stem length was established as an indirect measure of stem thickness and load capacity. Specific leaf mass position in...

Domestic Supply and Consumption Patterns of Coarse Grains, Pulses, Roots and Tuber Crops in Asia and the Pacific AgEcon
Rural poor populations in Asia and the Pacific live mainly in disadvantaged areas, isolated, lacking infrastructure, with harsh climatic and ecological conditions. Coarse grains, pulses, roots and tubers (CGPRT crops) often offer one of the limited options for development under these circumstances. Information on the situation of these crops in national economies is limited and becomes a constraint in the design of pro-poor measures for this target group with an objective of poverty alleviation. This monograph presents and analyzes long-term trends and the evolution of CGPRT crops in ESCAP countries. Its comprehensive, yet detailed, coverage of crops and countries make it a reference for researchers, students and analysts involved with the development of...

Yellow sweet potato flour: use in sweet bread processing to increase β-carotene content and improve quality Anais da ABC (AABC)
NOGUEIRA,AMANDA C.; SEHN,GEORGIA A.R.; REBELLATO,ANA PAULA; COUTINHO,JANCLEI P.; GODOY,HELENA T.; CHANG,YOON K.; STEEL,CAROLINE J.; CLERICI,MARIA TERESA P.S..
ABSTRACT Yellow sweet potato is mostly produced by small farmers, and may be a source of energy and carotenoids in the human diet, but it is a highly perishable crop. To increase its industrial application, yellow sweet potato flour has been produced for use in bakery products. This study aimed to evaluate the technological quality and the carotenoids content in sweet breads produced with the replacement of wheat flour by 0, 3, 6, and 9% yellow sweet potato flour. Breads were characterized by technological parameters and β-carotene levels during nine days of storage. Tukey’s test (p<0.05) was used for comparison between means. The increase in yellow sweet potato flour concentrations in bread led to a decrease of specific volume and firmness, and an...
